Can we stop kidding ourselves with Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Carleton</b></div><div>I left out Willy as a typo. Obviously. he's not going. I MEANT to say Marner.
Yeah, the series isn't over, but it should be. Even if by some grace of the hockey gods we win the next two, we are getting slaughtered against Florida. We do not have a team built for the playoffs.
What chronically online people on CF seem to forget is that players can waive NMC's. There is a potential world where Tree refuses to extend Marner and finds a way to get him to waive. Even if we retain, it frees some space to build a better D core and maybe get a 1A/B to help Woll.
My patience with Marner's saga in Toronto is over. I've seen enough of this baby.</div></div>
Thanks for explaining things Howie Meeker; what a crock 😂.
Nobody really cares what you think or what you’ve had enough of; you’re entitled to your opinion of course but just very unlikely that any player with a full NMC magically waives it.
The core of the team is set until 25-26 season. You can focus your hate on Marner all you want but he alone is not the reason we are losing this series or past series. He’s part of the problem but all of the core pieces (+ coaching staff) have underperformed at critical points in key playoff games.

That's it. Everyone else is fair game. If we lose this series clear the house.</div></div>
Willy has NMC, and just signed an 8 year extension.
First, series isn’t over so 🤞.
Second, core 4 were all given NMC (whether we like it or not); hard to imagine any of them waiving unless it was to a preferred destination and those teams probably don’t have cap space to absorb $10+M.
So, no major changes to roster (maybe coaching staff?) until following year when JT & Marner deals expire and there should be tons of flexibility with young players on elc’s ready to make team - Cowan, Minten, Grebyonkin, Niemela, Hildeby, etc).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SydBarrett</b></div><div>once you explain how a top prospect and a potential top 5 pick is scraps I will gladly explain why the leafs should trade perimeter mitch</div></div>
Yager is not a top prospect, but agree to disagree. Even assuming he is - Leafs window is now; a guy drafted this past year won’t even crack roster for a few years & a 2026 pick (player wouldn’t be in a position to contribute meaningfully until 28-29?).
Reilly Smith is not worth his cap hit.
So scraps might have been an exaggeration and inaccurate but still makes zero sense for Leafs to make this trade

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SydBarrett</b></div><div>The pens have been the undisputed best team of the cap era. 5 conference final trips, 4 cup finals, and 3 cup wins. No one that actually follows hockey expects them to be very good after such a run of utter dominance in the league. And any pens fan that gets upset when they fall off is a fool or a fair-weather fan.
When is the last time the leafs even made it to a single conference final?</div></div>
Agreed, Pens were a great team and Sid is top 5 all time. But they aren’t a great team anymore and I have yet to hear an argument why Leafs would trade Marner to Pens for scraps. Probably because there isn’t 🤷🏻

Again excellent debate strategy ; change the subject when losing. So far, Pens with Sid (best Canadian player of his generation) have out performed leafs (with best USA scorer of his generation) . Still doesn’t explain why we would ship Marner to Pens for table scraps

Maybe you convinced yourself 😂 . I see the upside for Pens - Marner with Sid would be epic, but I still see no reason why Leafs would entertain this ? No chance - nothing of interest coming back

What is the alternative? Telling McJesus (in his penultimate contract year) that the Oil need to take a step back to ensure the future? No chance you can win a Drai trade - they 100% keep him imo (even if he doesn’t extend) & go for the cup while they have him & McJesus in their prime

I guess you have incriminating pictures of Marner; why else would he waive (in contract year) to a non contender? How has Brossoit (a career backup) earned that ticket ? Domi gets more and where is Robertson?

This trade is a non starter - on both sides apparently. Not sure how Dubas can make any trades if he would be unwilling to part with one of his (only) valuable assets? Not much of value on Pens roster (that he would move), so maybe FA is his only hope - tough to move the needle that way 🤨

He’s had a good year, but hard to argue 2021-22 or 2022-23 weren’t down years (GAA >3.0, sv% of 0.901 & 0.894 & negative saves above expected) . Just personal opinion - very few goalies deserve term and aav > $3.0M; performance is too variable for 95-98% of nhl goalies.

Leafs are not in the market for LHD; and if they were willing to move 2024 1st, think they would have moved it at TDL. Leafs keep their assets and target RHD via FA

Truly abysmal & so many unrealistic assumptions:
Marner agrees to waive his NMC
Marner signs that ridiculous extension
Leafs are the one adding the 1st 🤯
Leafs accept a LHD at a big cap hit with term back, not an area of need and player is declining due to age

No goalie (outside of 2 or 3) is worth that cap hit; throw in the term and it’s way too big a risk for Leafs. Marner is not getting moved, but if he were - he’s worth much more

Why would Leafs do this? Keep Robertson and sign a cheaper goalie to play 1B to Woll next year. Goaltending position is voodoo and Jarry is not worth his cap hit imo

Everyone entitled to an opinion 🤷🏻, but completely different situations so poor comparison. Marner is younger, better and Leafs have no pressure point like Pens did (TDL, out of playoffs) .
No chance that Marner will be moved imo, but if he was - it will be for much much more than this
