Considering they are also retaining 1.1M I would say that it is an astronomically poor offer.

The younger D who has been effective as a third pairing D in the NHL over 119 games....now has lower upside than the D who was ineffective in 11 games in the NHL as a 3rd pairing D. Makes sense.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Byrr</b></div><div>Leafs have taken their time with Liljegren and given their success at developing guys, they deserve the benefit of the doubt.</div></div>
Their great success of developing 17 minutes a game at age 21 Dermott into 11 minutes a game at age 24 Dermott? (and a track record of zero success with their D draft picks for years).
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quote:</div>Buffalo however has rushed Jokiharju just as they've rushed everyone who they tried to develop in their system. He could have used more time in the AHL.</div>
Joki had played 38 games for Chicago at age 18. Buffalo, who is terrible at development, made the only right call by playing him in the NHL. The Leafs' made a massive mistake burying Sandin after playing him 28 games in the NHL as a teenager last year.

Potential Forsberg Deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>imawesome</b></div><div>I get 3M is a lot, but it's only 1.5 years. Are you saying you'd rather have like Kerfoot, Sandin, 1st?</div></div>
3M for 1.5 years is massive in the NHL right now, especially for a team like Toronto. Getting rid of 6.25M of cap from Marleau cost Toronto a first and that was before the cap froze for years.
I think you are looking at Kerfoot (cap dump who I think needs to be included for any deal to work for Toronto, unless they use a third team to further retain on Forsberg's salary, or take Kerfoot), Sandin (or Liljegren, or Robertson - Nashville's choice among the 3), plus a 1st, plus a 2nd or 3rd round prospect.

No need for Liligren at all. Or Sandin lol.</div></div>
Toffoli had a cap hit of 4.6M which severely reduced the possibilities of any contending teams being able to be in on him. You would have to be a fool to compare the two. Coleman cost 2 firsts (2020 and Foote). Now Coleman had another year left on his contract, but due to the expansion draft an extra year is not of much appeal, and draft picks this coming year will have reduced value because the lack of playing opportunities and the lack of ability to scout will leave them a complete crap shoot.

Iafallo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ZiggyPalffy</b></div><div>I highly doubt Toronto would trade Sandin for Iafallo or any other rental.</div></div>
I would highly recommend that they don't, but the team is convinced (I'm not) that they are a strong contender and in win now mode. They will likely be overpaying for someone. They gave up a first and two 2nd round prospects for a year and a half of Muzzin - before they were in win now mode and with no retention. I think that being a rental bothers the Leafs less this year because they would have difficulty protecting any non-rental in the expansion draft anyway (as I assume they protect 4D along with Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander).
So the Leafs' want to bring in a guy who can play in the top-6 who they think will put them over the top. Rumour is that Granlund is a player they have been after. Iafallo has come up as well. In both cases they will want retention. What does Toronto have as a trade chip? Not much. They will not want to subtract from their current roster (other than someone like Engvall who they will likely lose on waivers anyway). A late first round pick for a draft where teams can't really scout players is not going to be worth close to as much as it normally would be. To me that leaves Sandin, Robertson and Liljegren, and I think that the first two are the much better choices for LA. If it was Iafallo (retained) and returning Toronto's 3rd (from the Campbell trade) for either Robertson or Sandin (probably with Engvall thrown in) I would do it if I was LA. If Toronto won't agree to that then I think it is best to keep Iafallo.

The Kings LD is just about solidified for the future with Anderson, Clague, and Bjornfot. All we need on the backend is a #2 RD behind Doughty which would make Lilly a good target. Is Lilly exempt to the expansion draft or does he have to be protected?</div></div>
As long as he gets away from Toronto, Sandin will be better than Bjornfot, Anderson and Clague. It is unlikely that Lilly becomes a #2 RD and LA wasn't interested in him 2 years ago (whereas they wanted Sandin). Both are exempt from the expansion draft.

Yes. Any trade with Sandin would be different that one with Liljegren, but Sandin - at this point - is worth the difference. While I never thought that Dubas would ever trade Sandin, the Leafs' have been doing a good job of destroying the relationship between him and management/coaching, it is easy to see in interviews, and I am sure other organizations have sensed that.

If the team believes they are in win now mode then getting the final piece they need is going to cost them. Personally, I don't think Bennett is the right piece at all, but the chances of the Leafs' trading Sandin or Robertson for someone is pretty high. Muzzin cost a first and two prospects taken in the second round.

Iafallo plays top-line, top PP, and PK. Perhaps you should learn something, anything, like anything at all, about players on other teams. Iafallo has 36 points in his last 40 games, has always been strong defensively, is trusted in all situations, and is the kind of player that every coach wants to clone.
Leafs' are supposedly in win mode. They are looking for somone to play top-6, not more depth. Getting the right pieces is going to cost them, and the cost is really not that high as they will ruin Sandin if they keep him anyway.

If LA trades Iafallo to Toronto, they should be looking for Sandin to improve their weak LD.

How many stars are traded as rentals? Almost no one. Stars rarely get traded, but when they do it generally has little to do with the number of years until they are UFA. Half of Leafs' fans would not be surprised at all if McDavid or Eichel were traded in the next year and a half. Matthews is similarly playing on a consistently underperforming team, but with a much shorter contract, and is the only one of the three who is overpaid for what he delivers.

How could that be comparable? Matthews has less than 4 years left. There is no way one could possibly compare trading one player with 5 years left to a player with less than 4 years left. Especially when one of them had won 2 Norris trophies, finished in the top-9 in Hart voting 4 times and had carried his team to the conference finals a year before.
