50Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 5 - TDL additions (Go Big or Go Small)

I thought I heard Jarnkrok is playing. Doesn't that put them 1 over?

Not sure what it means, but Lyubushkin is listed as "non-roster". Gio on IR. and Leafs meet the 23 man roster requirement and are compliant.
I suppose he couldn't catch a flight. or has to wrap things up there before coming.
It seems Timmins can be put on LTIR and that will buy them another week when Libby (Boosh?) finally joins.

And the other move part comes with the Leafs still being sable to fit Libby under the cap without double retention</div></div>
I think Jones will be here the entire season. With Woll injury and Sammy's mental health - too risky not to have 3rd goalie.
I would suspect Timmins will be LTIR. I think he needs to be off for another week (which is deadline day) to meet the 24 day criteria.
Possibly Robertson sent down, to regain some scoring touch, depending on Timmins return.
Don't know about Gio's status, but they will likely play it week to week depending if another injury happens.
Remember last year they had no goalie for the final 2 games? There will be some "play-it-by-ear" and maybe even send Knies down rather that losing an expected playoff asset on waivers.

I just noticed Leafs have a roster of 24.
Will Timmins go on LTIR, or Gregor waived, or Robertson send down (or Knies).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>So leafs need to make a roster move to fit Woll, Jarnkrok, and Gio back
2 options
1. Waive Gregor
2. Send down Holmberg whose got 2 more games of waiver exemption till after TDL
Honestly option 1 be very tempting</div></div>
So Leafs have 6 games before trade deadline. LV, PHX, NYR, BOS, BUF and @BOS.
If Holmberg plays more than 2 of those, he is not waiver exempt for the rest of the season.
I suspect for Cap reasons, Leafs will have to do juggling in the final part of the season. It seems logical to keep that option open.
I am not sure if I would send him down, but I would not play him more than 2.
Maybe Gregor being send down is independent of Homberg (i.e. create some space for trades).
Aside from the "shooting gallery" Duck game, he's averaging 11 minutes a game - it seems they should be able to find someone to replace that.

2 options.
1) This is a serious tournament and top 12 IIHF teams participate.
2) Tournament is a gimmick to make NHL money. Have 4 teams and get is over as soon as possible. a) Canada, b) USA, c) Scandinavia, d) Rest of Europe/World.

1. Even heading in to this game, Sammy had the best Win % on the Leafs. Take away that 2 week horrible stretch and I'd say it's debatable who will be the playoff goalie.
2. Looking at +/-. Nylander (+1), Tavares (-4), Bertuzzi (+0), Domi (+0) and Rielly (-1) are not that great.
3. Still think Rielly needs to hold back a bit and he'd be a better player.

Didn't same thing (sort of) happen with Spezza. Suspension was reduced after he already served his full time (although that was in COVID, so 2 games were ppd), so it's just a few bucks back in Mo's pocket.
They will likely announce this suspension reduction in a week or so when people are distracted.

I am not asking him to be a Rod Languay. But he needs to be a bit more picky in the spots he picks to join the rush.
Getting the puck up ice does not mean the defenceman needs to join the rush ahead of the centreman. They can pass it to.
And maybe the problem is that Klingberg was supposed to share the load and he bombed. Also, Timmins is a bit like Robertson that he's not trusted - and just when an opportunity presents itself, he is injured.

I honestly think Reily thinks he's Paul Coffey and focuses a bit too much on being an offensive defenceman.
If he held back a bit more, Leafs would be better.
Without Reily, Leafs D stay back a bit more and it leads to success.

I suspect St. Louis thought this would be a cake-walk with all the Leaf absences. Leafs will have to follow this up in the re-match.
But 15 SOG against, and outshooting Blues 13 to 4 in the 3rd period was pretty dominant. Hat's off to them (especially McMann).

"A player who instigates a fight in the final five minutes of a game (or in overtime in the regular season) will instead be charged a game misconduct and given an automatic one-game suspension".
I wonder if this rule is encouraging stick work.
In hindsight, Reilly would have been much better opting for the 1 game.
With the benefit of time, Reilly should have cross checked him in the ribs a few times and then punched him in the head a few times with the gloves on.
Probably 2 for cross checking, 2 for roughing, and nothing farther said.

Shooting the puck off the boards is a normal play. If the puck gets a bit high and goes in the bench, is that a normal play. Now how about if you are perpendicular to the bench and shoot it?
I don't think you violated any rules. Likely only unsportsmanlike conduct - which really means going against the unwritten rules (sort of like Sean Avery).

Spezza went to make a hit and Pionk then bend down to glove the puck (also not much of a hockey play). Spezza went down as well to try to make the body check.

Yes - Spezza was going for a clean hit while play was still going on - that's definitely a hockey play. Hitting someone well after the goal is not a hockey play.

Forgot to mention the goalie. Jones gave us 5 or so good games - which maybe is better than what we could have expected at the start of the season.
But I am almost thinking the last 5 to 8 games he was in - his play was responsible for loss of points in almost all of them.
I also worry this means Woll is out for even longer, as otherwise they would have played Sammy yesterday as Sammy's rest would have been imminent.

No matter how many times they don't turn it on - they think they have the talent (and they definitely have the attitude) that they are great.
