Its more a thought experiment, but I personally don't think the Preds are talented enough to hold off the Oilers, Flames, and Wild who will be coming.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jd__</b></div><div>Nothing has been said in a long time about the Predators having Saros available for trade. Can’t put all your faith in a rookie goaltender and a competent backup to bring your team to the playoffs. To call the Preds a “not great team” is abysmal considering they are in a playoff spot at this time.

Even if the Preds wanted to trade Saros, I don’t think this even does it for an arguable top 5 goalie in the whole league.</div></div>

The Preds dumped Johansen, Ekholm, and Duchene last season for a changing of the guard. Josi is 33, McDonagh is 34, Schenn is 33, Barrie they don't want. The young guys are ready, Askarov is close if not already ready and Lankinen can probably hold the fort. The Preds are in transition, or at least they should be.

But you're right, if they trade Saros, they should be getting at least 1 A asset back and the Leafs 1st and Minten are probably B+ assets at best. If this is Knies and the 1st, I think the Preds should be doing it. Having Askarov and Lankinen in net and being able to build around Tomasino and Knies and some of their really really good prospects plus 2 firsts this year and next (and last year actually) they'll be on the right track vs a 28 year old goalie with a year and a half left.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pompadour_de_Armstrong</b></div><div>You can only buy out a guy that was on your squad at the deadline during the second window. Leads are the only team who can buy him out now.
For the AZ trade the Voracek and Little contracts are almost completely insured. Very little real cost. Murray is making $8 million this year (two of it helpfully supplied by Ottawa). I just don't see them interested at any price. I think Toronto is better off biting the bullet and buying him out than moving good assets to move him, and I doubt he would go cheap. Or "lose" a trade with Willy and make some space and just ride with Murray and Samsonov the rest of the year.</div></div>

Thank you for this answer. I admit, I don't fully understand the insurance parts of it. Like I know insurance pays it but I don't know if there is some benefit to not using that insurance or whatever. Its far fetched for sure. Toronto can buy out Murray and trade Jarnkrok and they will be under. They'll have to take an L on a Jarnkrok deal because everyone knows they will have to get rid of him, but they should be able to get something. He scored 20 goals last year and hes a very affordable 2.1 for the next 3 years as a good 3rd line winger who can bump up into your top 6 short term as an injury replacement.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMDannyB</b></div><div>Flyers decline it’s already known that insurance pays the overwhelming majority of Ellis’ contract anyway so we would be taking on Murray for nothing lol</div></div>

I admit I do not know which contracts are and aren't covered with tons of insurance. Plus Philly hasn't shy'd away from spending money when they have to so that one seemed like a stretch too.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tryger</b></div><div>Why would a team intentionally buy a bad contract that will potentially impact their cap, for guys who don't? There is a cap crunch, and league wide there is zero interest in Murray unless compensation is coming with it.</div></div>

To save cash is the only reason, maybe I wasn't clear in my initial post. Arizona for example has Shea Weber's contract because its a 7.5 cap hit but its only 1 million in salary. So they can get to the floor, without paying any money out.

Admittedly, the idea is flawed, but with the Vancouver example, they would send out 4.25 + 3 + 3 for Pearson and the 2 years of Poolman, which is 10.25 million. If they took back Murray and bought him out, that's 5.333 for an actual cash savings of 4.92 million ish dollars which the owner can put in his pocket. It doesn't help the hockey team, it just helps the owner save cash. A lot of these contracts are insured, so it defeats the purpose because the owner isn't paying any cash, but still. Ask a Canucks fan about whether their owner wants to spend money properly? They will not give you a nice answer lol.
