Crazy Idea Treliving gets more guys back
I think its unlikely this trade in general and at least as unlikely that Calgary retains on Markstrom, but getting out of the last 2+ years of Markstrom's contract, handing the crease to Wolf and getting a 1st and a couple guys they can take a chance on might make sense for the Flames. Leafs aren't exactly in desperation mode for a goaltender right this second, but I think the chance to get a no doubt number 1 guy might be something Treliving considers, and if Markstrom struggles and/or continues to decline, Woll can still take over sometime in the next 2 years. Woll also has another year at under a million left to play with for next year.

Leafs NEED a Goalie
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DarthRightus</b></div><div>try trading with a team that's willing to move their goalie instead of whoever you decide you want.</div></div>
Its more a thought experiment, but I personally don't think the Preds are talented enough to hold off the Oilers, Flames, and Wild who will be coming.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jd__</b></div><div>Nothing has been said in a long time about the Predators having Saros available for trade. Can’t put all your faith in a rookie goaltender and a competent backup to bring your team to the playoffs. To call the Preds a “not great team” is abysmal considering they are in a playoff spot at this time.
Even if the Preds wanted to trade Saros, I don’t think this even does it for an arguable top 5 goalie in the whole league.</div></div>
The Preds dumped Johansen, Ekholm, and Duchene last season for a changing of the guard. Josi is 33, McDonagh is 34, Schenn is 33, Barrie they don't want. The young guys are ready, Askarov is close if not already ready and Lankinen can probably hold the fort. The Preds are in transition, or at least they should be.
But you're right, if they trade Saros, they should be getting at least 1 A asset back and the Leafs 1st and Minten are probably B+ assets at best. If this is Knies and the 1st, I think the Preds should be doing it. Having Askarov and Lankinen in net and being able to build around Tomasino and Knies and some of their really really good prospects plus 2 firsts this year and next (and last year actually) they'll be on the right track vs a 28 year old goalie with a year and a half left.

Leafs NEED a Goalie
With the team that the Leafs have, its absolutely irresponsible for them to be running a combination of Woll, Jones, Hildeby, and the corpse of Samsonov out there. They NEED to go get a goalie. Preds have Askarov ready, Lankinen has looked good, they aren't a great team, they get to take a chance on Robertson and they get Minten who was just the captain of Canada at their disappointing world juniors and the Leafs 1st this year. Jankowski and Foudy are roster filler, just to match number of contracts.
Preds should hold out and get Knies in this deal. Leafs won't want to deal him, but the Preds should ask for Knies because they don't have to trade Saros.

Not sure the Blues do this but Binnington is the right target for the upside and fairly reasonable that it would cost the Oilers a top asset like Bouchard.
Sharks aren't retaining on this one either because that's their last retention spot, but someone would bite for sure.

Zadorov to Toronto
Leafs need to get something done so they aren't trotting out minor leaguers all over the ice. Zadorov is a piece they are missing. Abruzzese was the center for Coronato in college so its probably worth the gamble and with the Leafs retaining on Klingberg, Calgary can flip him later and retain again. As bad as Klingberg has been, someone will 100% give something up for Klingberg at less than 2 million for 2 months.

Creative Murray trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pompadour_de_Armstrong</b></div><div>You can only buy out a guy that was on your squad at the deadline during the second window. Leads are the only team who can buy him out now.
For the AZ trade the Voracek and Little contracts are almost completely insured. Very little real cost. Murray is making $8 million this year (two of it helpfully supplied by Ottawa). I just don't see them interested at any price. I think Toronto is better off biting the bullet and buying him out than moving good assets to move him, and I doubt he would go cheap. Or "lose" a trade with Willy and make some space and just ride with Murray and Samsonov the rest of the year.</div></div>
Thank you for this answer. I admit, I don't fully understand the insurance parts of it. Like I know insurance pays it but I don't know if there is some benefit to not using that insurance or whatever. Its far fetched for sure. Toronto can buy out Murray and trade Jarnkrok and they will be under. They'll have to take an L on a Jarnkrok deal because everyone knows they will have to get rid of him, but they should be able to get something. He scored 20 goals last year and hes a very affordable 2.1 for the next 3 years as a good 3rd line winger who can bump up into your top 6 short term as an injury replacement.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMDannyB</b></div><div>Flyers decline it’s already known that insurance pays the overwhelming majority of Ellis’ contract anyway so we would be taking on Murray for nothing lol</div></div>
I admit I do not know which contracts are and aren't covered with tons of insurance. Plus Philly hasn't shy'd away from spending money when they have to so that one seemed like a stretch too.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tryger</b></div><div>Why would a team intentionally buy a bad contract that will potentially impact their cap, for guys who don't? There is a cap crunch, and league wide there is zero interest in Murray unless compensation is coming with it.</div></div>
To save cash is the only reason, maybe I wasn't clear in my initial post. Arizona for example has Shea Weber's contract because its a 7.5 cap hit but its only 1 million in salary. So they can get to the floor, without paying any money out.
Admittedly, the idea is flawed, but with the Vancouver example, they would send out 4.25 + 3 + 3 for Pearson and the 2 years of Poolman, which is 10.25 million. If they took back Murray and bought him out, that's 5.333 for an actual cash savings of 4.92 million ish dollars which the owner can put in his pocket. It doesn't help the hockey team, it just helps the owner save cash. A lot of these contracts are insured, so it defeats the purpose because the owner isn't paying any cash, but still. Ask a Canucks fan about whether their owner wants to spend money properly? They will not give you a nice answer lol.

He was ranked 32nd league wide in Save %, you can't justify that price unless you are sending a 1st or equivalent prospect coming back.</div></div>
Which price are you talking about? All of these trades are for LTIR guys and junk contracts. None of these trades have the Leafs getting anyone who plays.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bobrick</b></div><div>Why would a team take Murray, some just to buy him out, when they're trading guys they'll have on their own LTIR?</div></div>
Saving cash. The Canucks one which admittedly, I don't think works, would have the canucks trading away 10.25 million in actual dollars for Murray who makes 8 million in real dollars and then buying him out for 5.33, so they would save 7.25 in cash this season swapping out Pearson and Poolman and then 3 million next season. Yes they are on LTIR so they don't hit the cap, but they still get paid. Some owners need to save actual cash. It's a stretch, but I'm trying to be creative anyway lol.

Toffoli is a pending UFA in his 30s, coming off a career year who was in Vancouver before. Boeser is 26(I think) and has way more upside, Flames can take a chance on a bounce back and keep him or flip him.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BorisBagel</b></div><div>Habs pass on that long term cap hit

You're probably right. If the Flames pivoted and moved Huberdeau, thats their only shot I think.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jets12</b></div><div>no chance from winnipeg
i would suggest giving Huberdeau another shot with a different coach</div></div>
This is their only chance to move Huberdeau I think if they want to move him. His chances of living up to that deal are 0. He's already 30 and he's 10.5 for 8 more years. 2022 was 23 points over his previous career high and like 40 over his second best season. He vastly overperformed and then the Flames paid him like he did that every year. That contract isn't good now and its going to be REALLY bad in 2-3 years, not to mention the other 5-6 years on the end of it. If the Flames can entice the Habs to take it, they should.

The Kings as you, probably know, are LOADED. Maybe its not Roy, maybe its Walker instead? Or Durzi? I guess I just don't see Puljujarvi as a cap dump yet. Puljujarvi for Roy and then throwing in the 2nd to get rid of Ceci. If Edmonton makes a trade for a dman, they HAVE to figure out how to send back one of their other guys. There are so many bad dmen there.

This is the Kings home run swing. They give up 2 1sts and 2 top prospects to bring in a new goalie and Chychrun while getting out of the Peterson contract. They also flip Roy to the Oilers for Puljujarvi and get Arizona to eat that terrible Ceci contract.
Why does Arizona do it? They take a chance on rejuvenating Peterson and Ceci while helping them get to the floor, and for their troubles they get 2 picks and 3 good young players to help build with.

Leafs could probably retain on Kerfoot, it would still work. I wish I could edit my trade because I did think about that. Ritchie is just a body and Kerfoot is a middle 6 forward. I wouldn't say he was worth a 2nd most times, but at the deadline he is. If this was something the Leafs explored, I could see Seattle, Winnipeg, maybe Pittsburgh, maybe Minnesota taking a shot at Kerfoot. He has 23 points playing very limited minutes with the Leafs. He had 50 last year. He can play.

Leafs get creative to bring in some help
This doesn't have to be Calgary, but this is another way the Leafs can be creative. Kerfoot is a fairly valuable deadline rental as a versatile middle 6 forward who can add some scoring punch in a supplemental role, Calgary has said they need to add scoring, Kerfoot can play on the wing or in the middle and can help on their 2nd PP and 2nd PK if need be. Pretty standard deadline cost of a 2nd. Maybe Calgary can do better than that and maybe Kerfoot goes somewhere else, but the point would be that he goes in a deal the Leafs make as a seller to bring in assets to add to their Chychrun package.
Then they add Chychrun for their 1st, Sandin, Calgary's 2nd, and Ty Voit who is having an exceptional season in the OHL. Voit might be too low of a spot, and Arizona probably doesn't want to retain on their own guys so that they can retain on other teams players for some freebie picks so maybe take that out as well.
Regardless, Leafs upgrade Sandin to Chychrun and add some size with Bjugstad for the stretch run to help combat that Tampa bottom 6. Plus they maintain some of their deadline space. Calgary gets some scoring, Arizona gets a young D with upside, a young forward, and 2 picks.

First of all.... THIS IS PROBABLY A BAD IDEA! lol
HOWEVER, if this happened, Sharks could flip Holl and Kerfoot or Leafs could flip them for picks and include them or keep them or whatever they ended up doing. Neither of those guys would stay on the Sharks. I could see the Sharks wanted to see if they had anything in Engvall and Sandin is a legit piece. In theory, this could be a 4-way trade where Kerfoot goes to the Jets for a 2nd and/or one of their extra dmen and Holl could go to any number of teams for a 3rd as a rental. Essentially Sharks could end up with Sandin, a 1st, 2 2nds, a 3rd, and another young-ish dman plus Engvall.
Leafs new lineup:
Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Marner
McMann - Kampf - Nieto
Gadjovich - Holmberg - Aston-Reese
Brodie - Karlsson
Rielly - Lilljegren
Giordano - Timmins
and the top powerplay is Karlsson, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Tavares!!!

With double retention, this trade works, I don't know how to do that in the trade machine, but it does work.
It's a bold move for sure and I'm not positive its the best possible move for the Leafs. But I really think the "near future" on the blue line is Rielly-Liljegren; LD-Brodie; Gio-Holl. So if you upgrade Sandin to the super steady Ferraro who is also locked in at a low number for a few years which helps with the cap situation. This also only works if the Sharks are willing to give up Ferraro who I know they like.
Leafs top 6 becomes: Bunting - Matthews - Nylander; Meier - Tavares - Marner; with then Jarnkrok and Kerfoot able to fill in or be the 3rd line.
