We have prospects we need to start developing like Goncalves, we don't need to reunite with the holy ghost of Tyler Johnson

That's true but I'll take that 25% because he'll be younger and on an ELC when guys like Bedard, Korchinshi, Nazar, etc are getting paid on their second contracts. I like Jeannot and I love his physical game, but right now I value that 3rd higher than him.

Kaliyev does actually make so much sense for Tampa
Give him like a 3 year deal though

SCARY good Lightning
Good team but I wouldn't say scary good.
Nick Paul should be a 3C not a 2RW so you have a top six hole but otherwise that top six is quite good if Cirelli can up his point totals a bit.
That 3rd line is at best only okay and that 4th line should be in the AHL.
The defense is solid but can it withstand a top 4 injury, not so sure about that.
Tampa has one of the best starting goalies in the league but is Johansson a quality backup, not sure about that either.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>That's 100% reasonable, I'd also like nothing better than being wrong about the timeline. But I'm sure you understand the reluctance to push any chips to the center if it means we're sacrificing something that looks to be a core piece for a longer window. I want the window to be Tampa 2014-present, not Montreal 2019-2021.
I do agree that Cernak would be a great fit, though, there's no doubt about that.</div></div>
I don't think a Cernak pickup would risk that at all, honestly. Prospect depth here is sufficient such that I think it's a worthwhile risk - and compared to other means of addressing the issue, a minimal risk IMO.

Kent Johnson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BoomerTheHero</b></div><div>I definitely disagree, Jiricek has shown he is ready for the NHL. We already had to deal with him having issues being sent down this past season, no way we are doing that again and risking alienating our most valuable prospect. Gudbranson also makes too much to be scratched. Scratching 4mil players is terrible cap management.</div></div>
I'd scratch a $4M Gudbranson to play Cernak in a heartbeat, cap be damned. I'd like a Cernak trade for the same reason I'd rather see us draft Silayev or Levshunov over Lindstrom: we have hardly any NHL-floor D-men in the system, and the NHL D-men we have can't shut down anyone.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Viqsi</b></div><div>I think the supposed issues with Jiricek are overblown, and I don't think he's shown he is ready. He's still making some of the same dumb mistakes; yes, he's outscored a few of them, but that's not enough at this level.
And as for cap management - part of why I'm so enthusiastic about Cernak in particular is because I think we badly need his skillset and that we're unlikely to get it without paying more than what he makes to folks who are even older and who would require term taking them to even later parts of their career. It's not a sweetheart deal, but it's a decent one. There are potentially better ways to cover that gap, but I don't think they're anywhere near as likely to succeed in doing so.</div></div>
I agree with you, but my concern is age. Making a move for Cernak is great if the rest of the team was a shutdown defenseman away from competing, but I think the core is just too young for that move to make enough of an impact now, and by the time the window is open, he's reached the end of his prime. Maybe he plays well until he's 38, but realistically he's only a contributing core piece for 4-5 years of a potential window, then we're looking at a replacement again. It's kind of the same argument we have over Marner, and it's not something I'd want to trade someone who could be a top-6 ppg winger for 10+ years for.
Would I be mad? No. Would Tampa need to add? Of course. Is it exactly the kind of win-now move and mentality that I think this organization chases constantly, and has caused us to be mired in mediocrity instead of ever building a legitimate contending team for 20+ years? Absolutely.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dopplsan</b></div><div>CBJ need KJ's T6 potential more than they need a Cernak.</div></div>
I frankly disagree. This defense's lack of shutdown capability - both on the roster and in the system - is IMO a potentially crippling flaw, and this move pretty much ends that concern immediately. One could certainly debate about whether or not it's fair value as is, but I think we badly need a Cernak and we've got more than enough potential top 6 wingers to spare KJ - even if he is particularly special as a creative playmaker.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BoomerTheHero</b></div><div>We already have too many RD. If we somehow trade Severson and Boqvist, then targeting Cernak might make sense. I agree with everyone else, TB would have to add to make the trade, but without many drafts picks or great prospects, not sure what they could add that would be attractive enough to the Jackets.</div></div>
We've got many RD, sure, but we don't have many that can handle the same kinds of responsibilities Cernak can. I think targeting him is not just sensible but downright vital.
An add would possibly be appropriate but I'm also not sure what.

I'd absolutely pounce on that without even blinking, but I'm kind of insanely desperate for shutdown blueliners here and so my position on same might not be common consensus.

I like huuhtanen and GOncalves but they are aweful skaters, especially huuhtanen, he's gonna look like a dollar store Jeannot it'll be bad</div></div>
Huuhtanen is way faster than Jeannot and also has way more tenacity, a better shot, more skill, and upside in general. Gage isnt fast but skating doesnt limit him

Quick Retool
Even dropping cap space, Tampa would want more assets.
Jeannot would fit in great in LA's system though and if healthy, a constant league leader in hits.
I like Grundstrom in the bottom 6 role, but he never hit potential and I don't think he will get a $1.3m qualifying offer and potentially an UFA, making his trade value is pretty low. Was his time this season in the AHL last season for conditioning or was he sent down/pass through waivers?
Kaliyev might have skill and potential to do well in Tampa, but that still is a gamble. I would take a chance on him but would need to switch over that 4th rounder coming Tampa's way to do the player swap.

That gets you a Cirelli signed stick. That's a bunch of scraps for a top 10 defensive foward in the league on a nice contract. My rule stands any title "Helping...."
It's them getting fleeced"
