My humble guess is that he's included in several proposals for mainly two reasons: 1) persistent rumours that he wants to play South of the border ; 2) along with Anderson, he's basically the only "touchable" impactful player signed with term who has a legitimate trade value.

This being said, like Anderson, there's no rush to trade Petry. The rebuilding Habs have the luxury of having a three year window to sell Petry to the highest bidder since he won't be part of the next "core" considering his age. In other words, the Habs either get a 1st+ right now, or trade him in 2025 for potentially a similar package.

Sujet: Targeting a PMD Girard Dunn Soucy Lauzon
I had a inkling that I was likely underestimating Girard’s contract value in light of all these recent 9M+ AAV deals and see that I severely overreached in my humble proposal. I was initially aiming for a deal with the Kraken for Dunn (same package, but a 3rd instead of the 1st) and should definitely have revised even more my package before switching to Girard!

In retrospect however, it would be near-impossible to fit Girard under the cap with a revised offer around Lekhonen, Romanov, Harris/Struble/Norlinder, 1st and 2nd - at least without shedding another contract elsewhere.

(This being said, let’s not forget that the Avalanche owes the Habs a great deal for obtaining Patrick Roy for scraps. Girard could be the long-awaited consolation prize, Hehe.)

Sujet: Retooling for the expansion draft and beyond
To comment/answer a few queries:

- Anderson being a RFA, an offer sheet under 4M/year would cost a 2nd round pick. By offering a (late) 2nd and Poehling, I think Columbus just might take the bait, especially if they want to keep Dubois long term. I guess however that Montreal could add one of its numerous mid-round pick in 2020 to grease the wheels if Columbus’ GM insists.

- As for the Domi trade, I think the Habs can afford to concentrate on obtaining a 1st round pick as the main return for him if Anderson can be added to the lineup this offseason (or if Caufield breaks out sooner than expected). Considering that Minnedita cruelly lacks depth at center and has PIT’s 1st rounder as well as its own pick in 2021, I think the proposed deal’s a win-win. As for the addition of Greenway, Domi is worth more than the potential of PIT’s 1st (2021), hence a tangible short term asset to buff up Montreal’s size on the wing. I guess however that Montreal could also add one of its numerous mid-round pick in 2020 to grease the wheels if Bill Guerin insists.

Sujet: 2022-2023 Roster - Frozen Cap Era - Prospects Dev and 2 note-worthy trades
I targeted Huberdeau in this scenario because the Panthers are at a crossroad offensively and might want to explore a new direction. If Montreal hadn’t move for Edmunston, it would have had the cap space to take on a « bad contract » to facilitate deal. Without this leverage, I concur that the Habs must overpay for Huberdeau, who would help solve Montreal’s PP woes and lack of high-end talent, while his contract terms would nevertheless give the Habs cap flexibility to build 3 offensive lines (and be a good way to put pressure on Gallagher and Danault’s agents for them to sign under 6M/year upon renewal!)

If Domi extended at least 3 years (@ max. 5M), Tatar with 50% retention for 1 year (60 pts winger @ 2,4M), MTL’s 2021 1st round pick (top-10 protected), Ryan Poehling and a young D not named Romanov or Norlinder (LD : Mete/Harris/Struble or RD : Fleury/Juulsen/Brooks) does not enough to spark interest from Florida - who can dump a few contracts to make it work if need be - then I would Move on to another target!

(I previously tried Comtois from Anaheim, Greenway (+2021 1st) from Minnesota and, I must admit, Mantha from Detroit (although nothing outrageous like some proposals out there!)

I guess Josh Anderson, either by trade or RFA offer (below 4M), will be my target in a next attempt!

Sujet: Preparing for the expansion and cap-crunch exploitation scheming
To answer a few queries :

- I put Danault, Gallagher and Petry on the protected list on the assumption that their contracts are renewed before then, something in the range of 6M for Petry, 5M for Danault; 4M for Gallagher.

- The Anaheim trade idea is built around the idea that Anaheim has to pay 6,62M to Corey Perry in 2020-2021 and that Gudbranson's 4M won't be hidden in the injured reserve indefinitely, unlike maybe Kesler's 6,8M. Their "real" cap space for 2020-2021 should thus around 1,4M, with a 20/23 roster. But I don't pretend to know to intricacies of Anaheim's financial situation; if my assessment is off, then yes I can understand why they would not be interested. The argument that Mete would be exposed afterwards does indeed lower his appeal, but seeing as I think Comtois's size and style of play would be a great fit in Montreal, I'd be open to revisit and the offered package, or change the cap burden's identity at Anaheim's choosing.

- Killorn, like Comtois, would a perfect fit size and style-wise to complement and balance the existing lines - and he would also bring experience and leadership to a the offensive core.

- Very curious to see how the Domi conundrum will evolve.

Sound argument, helps better understanding the Red Wings’ needs. Considering that Domi would be a must salary-wise and that Primeau, Caufield, Romanov, Norlinder and MTL’s 1st round picks are off the table, what/who could tip the balance? Jayden Struble (LD) + 47th and 97th overall (2nd + 4th round picks)?

To answer a few queries :

- The Byron trade’s aim is to offload his 3,4M (for the next 3 years) ; Blais’ salary (and physicality) is more manageable for bottom-6 duties. However I can see how Steen’s salary relief would be short-lived for the Blues, maybe the 4th round pick is thus not compensation enough, even though Byron is far from a simple throw-in, he’s a good veteran with impeccable work ethic and lethal speed; the Habs are too small on the wings and need to remediate this however.

- I concur with the one who said that the Jets missed Armia last season, especially since they lost Tanev (and Trouba) as well. Perreault’s cap dump provides the Jets some flexibility going ahead, while the Vesalainen/Armia+4th help each team’s weakness.

As for the trade centered around Domi and Mantha, I can see that emotions are running high! I concede that Mantha has an overall better value than Domi for now, but the difference is not worth a 1st round pick (nor Caufield) in my humble opinion. I would however be open to add one of MTL’s second round pick this year to the original deal, as well as change Lindgren for a D prospect in his early 20s (Fleury/Brook/Juulsen, ie.) since DET’s D is not looking good... Beyond that, considering MTL owns Domi’s rights for two more years, I would call upon Bob Gainey to take a stroll with Domi in Montreal’s Old Port district to remind him that there is « no I in team » and cross my fingers that it elevates his game like Kovalev back in the day!

Constructive feedback, thanks. Maybe I do undervalue Mete and the suggestion of trading Chiarot to Detroit would mean Mete could then be kept around for third pairing duty until Norlinder crossed the Atlantic! And with Armia drafted by Seattle instead of Chiarot, Byron’s salary could then be tolerated a little further. As for the Tampa trade, I might have overreached, but Florida’s ridiculous tax policy cannot eternally save them from cap-crunch hell! Maybe a revised swap of picks in favor of Tampa could be arranged? As for the St. Louis trade, it’s a gamble for sure with Tarasenko’s injury history, hence why I only included one first round pick on top of Ylonen and Struble - who are amongst the Habs’ most promising prospect. Caufield instead of Ylonen maybe, provided that Tarasenko has not lost his touch? And upon further consideration, Danault could probably be signed around 4,75 or 5 M (in the same waters as JG Pageau of the Islanders). Same thing for Gallagher, he would probably take in the range of 4.5M, as long as there is term.

15M between the pipes seems indeed unreasonable, but it is for two years only, while Primeau develops in the AHL and our top-3 centers’ salary combine for less than 6 M. Plus we need an unprotected G for the expansion draft. I don’t see how the MIN trade is unrealistic; the pick swap is there because Brodin is not signed beyond 2021. As for Huberdeau, maybe I reached a little by not including Caufield in the mix, but would be open to it in FLA’s counter-offer... As for Comtois, I like his potential and can understand why the Ducks wouldn’t move him, but I at least hope they make adequate room for him next year!

Finally, in regards to the lines I built, I followed players’ chemistry and complementarity, hence the reason why Armia, Comtois and Greenway are spread out to give size on each of their lines. The only exception is the pure offensive line of Suzuki and the Jonathans. I wouldn’t say that Kotkaniemi’s line is the second and Danault’s third, more like 2A and 2B, with their ice-time managed depending on the opponent and the score. I also put Kotkaniemi on the first PP line (replacing Huberdeau, who takes point with his awesome playmaking) so that Danault can center the second wave, keeping everyone happy!
