Description
Assuming Weber and Danault have unfortunately played their last game for Montreal and Bergevin’s latest comment that Drouin is expected back next season, here is a scenario in which:

- Bridge contract to Kotkaniemi (2,25M/year) : top-6 minutes/PP2; sink or swim, kid! ;
- Lekhonen and Armia re-signed mid-term for under 6M for the pair / year (no NTC crucial since I doubt both can finish their contract in Montreal) ;
- Byron unmoveable this season at the current rate for cap space, maybe next year with when only one year remains to vis contract? ;
- Perry re-signed one year / one million - 4th line/PP2, veteran presence in the room to fill the void left by the captain ;
- Paquette signed for under 1M as an insurance policy if Poehling can’t keep up with 4C duties (his to lose this season) ;
- Savard signed around 3,5M / year for 3 years to shore up the RD and provide veteran presence for the Romanov pairing ;
- J. Honka picked up for RD depth in Laval / project ;

At this stage, there would be around 7,5M for a top-4 RD.
Not enough to bid on the high profiles (Hamilton, ie.), but more than enough to go fetch a UFA stop-gap around 2M, like Vatanen or Hamonic? - and have around 5,5M for potential trade deadline dealings.

Alternatively, paying a Lord’s ransom to a team to take on Byron’s contract or forfeiting re-signing both Armia and Lekhonen could mean that Montreal would be in a position to seek a high profile RD.

Finally, I obviously don’t if Bergevin’s comment regarding Drouin’s comeback is true or if it’a a smokescreen for potential trade partners, but if he does return, I assume he’ll take the LW on Suzuki’s line (the only C with whom he has chemistry) and that Toffoli will slide back to Kotkaniemi’s line and Anderson with Evans’. Poehling (and sometimes Paquette) taking on the role of Staal on the cycling line with Perry and Armia.

From my understanding, DeAngelo is radioactive in a locker room, to say the least. Even though his on-ice profile is enticing and would definitively fill a dire need for an offensive RD, I think his intangibles would most likely negate the benefits. But clearly, in an ideal scenario, I would swap my conservative Vatanen/Hamonic signing with a more ambitious move, like trading future assets for Seattle in return for Dunn or Lauzon for example?
