If CGY holds on to long they may lose the chance to move or lose a dance partner if the price is to high
Thats what negotiating is for</div></div>Yes, but it's not just Flames vs Leafs, the Leafs are also competing with a plethora of other teams, teams that haven't traded away all their second round picks for the next 3 years and have much better prospects to move.
It's rumored the Canucks have already offered a 2nd and a prospect but the Flames never said yes, there is no way Tanev ends up in Toronto unless they are willing to move their 1st or Cowan, they just don't have the assets otherwise because plenty will be offering a 2nd+, so later picks and the Leafs meh prospects just aren't going to get it done.

My bad on the Niemela point forgot he was a 2020 guy not 2021. So he's one year behind but he has dominated the Liiga, won WJC defensemen of the tournament, and has had a very strong rookie AHL season, still projects nicely.</div></div>
Well an "A" prospect is somewhere between a blue-chipper (can't miss) and a B... someone with top line potential but isn't a sure thing, picking a random draft, I pulled up 2014m and guys like Jake Virtanen, Michael Dal Colle, William Nylander, Nik Ehlers, Nick Ritchie... etc.

You literally just described Minten as a B prospect. and how the **** is Niemela ahead of where Ras was? Dude is in his D+4 season and hasn't even gotten a sniff of NHL action, while in his D+4 season Andersson was an NHL regular

I like it
Tanev deal is close. I figure where he goes will come down to whatever small + to a 1st there may be and where the Flames management thinks a team's first rounder will end up. For instance if all things are equal, I would trade Tanev to Toronto over the Rangers, because I don't think the Leafs make it out of Round 2, while the Rangers are likely to win their division so even an exit in round 1 or 2 would have them picking after the Leafs.

Also Seravalli is a **** sipping moron who hasn't hardly been right about anything since leaving TSN

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>Dubois and Tkacuck were traded at the beginning of each season in an RFA year. Hardly the same and if you can’t see that, you might be blinded here. Them signing was the difference between locking in generational wealth vs. being paid a bridge deal.
Gaudreau to Philly was one option. There is a difference between going to a team that has lost consistently vs. going to the team with the best regular season record in the last two years. Things can change, but I’m very comfortable Boston will be in a great position to sign an impact player with Hanifin being the most likely.</div></div>
They both still chose to sign long-term extensions with Florida and LA after fans ran their mouths for years about how they only wanted to play in "X" city. I'm not saying he won't end up in Boston, but teh reality is he's likely to either sign an extension, or go to teh highest bidder.

If one has an extension, and is traded with retention, that % applies to current contract and extension. For that, I am sure.</div></div>Extensions in the NHL are not actually extensions. They are new contracts, because the CBA does not allow the renegotiation of contracts and an extension would be a renegotiation of both term and dollars. There is a reason this very site lists so called extensions as new contracts and lists the date the new contract was signed.
You are 100% wrong.

Yeah, like Gaudreau was signing in Philly and Tkachuk only wanted to play in St. Louis, then there is Dubois and Montreal... etc

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>It does
Retention applies to entire contract at time of trade (same % to earth year of remaining term at time of deal). An extension done prior to trade would be considered part of that contract (it’s not a new contract, it’s an extension to existing contract). Examples:
-- If Hanifin extends tomorrow, then traded next week, the % retained to count towards all years including extension.
-- If Hanifin does not sign extension, is traded with 50% retention, that applies to 2023-24 only.
-- If Markstrom is traded with 25% retention, that means 25% for remaining 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-25.
To retain one year, you’d have to trade him as pure rental before March 8th, then anytime between March 8th and July 1st, he would be eligible to sign 8-year term while with new team.</div></div>
actually in the NHL is is a new contract, because when they introduced the salary cap they also put in a rule about renegotiating contracts, also there is a rule stating contracts are a maximum of 8 years. We may call them extensions, but based on teh CBA they are new contracts.

It's not about breaking anything. It's that teams don't eat contracts for mediocre to poor players without compensation. Monahan didn't break the Habs, but they still got a 1st round pick to take him and that was just to take about 6.5m and he was a much better player than Maatta or Holl. This offer was bad without us eating 10m in future contracts for players we don't want.

You're trading far more in cap with both Hanifin and Tanev than you're taking back.</div></div>
SALARY not cap hits.
Beyond this season Matta is owed 3m, Holl is owed 6.8m (3.4x2)... I'm no mathemagician but 3+6.8 is pretty ****ing close to 10

Absolutely 0 chance the Flames accept that deal.
You have Calgary taking back almost 10m in salary beyond this year, there is zero compensation for this, and really the only decently enticing piece is the first, and we wouldn't even be getting it this year.

I was initially going to call this a slight overpayment by the Stars, then I saw Dadonov has a year remaining on his deal, so this is actually probably quite close, but I think the Flames would push for Stankoven or Bourque as we need a C more than a defender. Personally I'd pull the trigger though
