What would it cost to get Marner
I think you're overvaluing Marner. Marner is great but he's overpaid a lot. I think if the Leafs could pry Fabbro, Tomasino and a 2nd or higher you take it and run. Getting out from almost 11mil would be huge for Toronto.

Pretty sure this person used a video game to make the trade... I think they were just showing how out of whack NHL 20 can be.

Deadline Targets
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MG1986</b></div><div>I think you are thinking too one-dimensional with these targets, not to say the Leafs wouldn't have any interest in Brendan Dillon for example, if the price was right. The targets the Leafs should be, and are hopefully, targetting a forwards that can defend and kill penalties and defenders that are reliable and solid on the back end. Big areas that need improvement are goals against and PK, so that's what these moves should target. Adding players with some term/control is also something I think the Leafs would prefer. Here are some suggestions:
Anaheim: Josh Manson, Carter Rowney, Derek Grant
Colorado: Ryan Graves, Matt Nieto, Matt Calvert
Minnesota: Marcus Foligno
Nashville: Colton Sissons, Calle Jarnkrok
New Jersey: Blake Coleman, Damon Severson
Philadelphia: Scott Laughton
Vegas: Cody Eakin
I am not saying all these players will be available. I am just offering alternative and perhaps better suggestions to what the Leafs actually need.</div></div>
I was focusing on defense. But a Marcus Foligno would be a great pick up. A lot of your suggestions are great.

Opening night without Marner
I've watched Bracco, foot speed an issue- sure, small- sure, poor defensively- sure. But he's got a lot of skill, worked hard last year and deserves a chance to at least play, and it would be a waste to have him on a 4th line. Give him a chance with JT and if he fails, he fails and you send him down, if he plays well you've boosted trade value or you keep him, it's pretty simple.

It wouldn't cost a 1st to move Perreault. In fact, I am sure a team would throw a 2nd or 3rd someones way for Perreault.

This is just an experiment
Marner gets a 3 year contract.
Year 1: 7m, 6.3m signing bonus, 700K salary
Year 2: 8.25m, 7.55m signing bonus, 700K salary
Year 3: 11.6m, no signing bonus, this way his qualifying offer has to be at least 11.6m.
Cap hit is 8.95m.
However this contract could be a risk, Marner could sign the qualifying offer and walk as a UFA right after.

Can anyone explain the appeal of Adam Larsson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>By what metric? He has been scored on a lot more than Zaitsev, they are both negative possession wise and neither do well at suppressing shots. I keep looking for something that gives Larsson the edge but from what I can find, they are pretty much the same.
Don't get me wrong, I think they both are decent players but there is almost no discernible difference between them. I am not sure you can find two players more similar and yet Edmonton can trade him and get a return while the Leafs have to send assets to teams to take Zaitsev. Both teams are in a difficult cap situation, although very different scenarios. TO has too many good players that need to be paid and some will have to be moved while Edmonton has little space and several bad contracts that hamper them.
I just don't get why Larsson gets so much love while Zaitsev gets nothing but hate.</div></div>
I actually don't mind Zaitsev and think he has more value than a lot of people think he has. The reality is that the leafs won't get much because all the teams know they need to move salary. But getting back to Larsson vs Zaitsev: Larsson hits more, blocks more, clears the front of the net, he has more take aways(although he gives the puck up as much as Zaitsev as well). Larsson also has more NHL experience and everyone knows what he is. Zaitsev seems to be a wild card even now, he seems to be getting worse every year. Maybe a change of scenery would be good for Zaitsev.

Marner
I posted some wishful BS earlier about acquiring Subban while moving Nylander and Marleau. A poster made a comment that signing bonuses are only taxed at 25%(Less than no tax states) in Canada. Not sure if this is true but if it were I don't know why the Leafs are having to pay out such high dollar values for our RFA's? I love Marner, I want to see him here for a long time but to me he should come in at 9.5M (comparable: Kucherov).
Matthews should have been more around the 9.5-10M as well, especially on a 5 year deal.

clearing cap
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mikearky</b></div><div>Let's face facts, Marleau has a NMC and if he wants to stay he is staying and why would he accept a trade to Nashville, when Toronto is on the cusp of possible winning a cup?
I find it funny that many Toronto fans want him gone and do not understand he holds all the cards.</div></div>
I believe Marleau has a lot to offer even at 40. I’d have no problem with him being a Leaf next season. He can still contribute in a top 9 roll imo. However, the Leafs need cap room. Everyone anticipated big contracts for Matthews, Marner and Nylander but no one knew how big. And I guarantee no one thought Tavares would be here when Marleau was signed. If the Leafs can move Marleau they will. Marleau May hold all the cards but Nashville has as good a shot for the cup as the Leafs. Nashville also doesn’t have state tax meaning Marleau would make slightly more money.
We would be doing Nashville as much a favour as they’d be doing us one. They get a valuable player back in Nylander but moving Subban is imperative for them because they’ve got Josi to resign after next season.

Zaitsev has been good
I posted last week that I believe you'd see an improvement from Zaitsev if he had a better partner. I think the Leafs should explore trading Gardiner as part of a package to get a RHD or trade him for picks and or prospects that you could use to get a RHD. Any RHD doesn't have to be as good offensively as Gardiner but it shouldn't be hard to find someone better defensively.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aspina25</b></div><div>If McDavid has to go through another period of rebuilding and they ship off Draisaitl, he's going to ask for an out.</div></div>
He won't if he can get some actual wingers to play with and have a younger, faster back end that can dish the forwards the puck. IMO there are 4 contracts that really need to be moved from Edmonton, Russel, Lucic, Sekera, and Draisaitl.

Matthews and Marner wont get huge money
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BurgerBoss</b></div><div>Stupid example, but Kucherov scored 100+ points and got a $9,5M deal from that.
Add taxes to that, and $9,5M in Tampa is around $11,1M in Toronto, at least according to <a href="https://gavingroup.ca/nhl-tax-calculator/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">this site</a>
So considering it like that, Marner taking $10M is a discount in itself.</div></div>
The whole tax thing is blown out of proportion. Any good accountant will be able to maximize the dollar amount regardless of province or state.
