Hm I'd love the Bear deal if he had more potential but I see what he is now as his apex -for Yamamoto after his ELC for instance would be absolutely brilliant- however it's nice to see 8 year term given to where it's deserved (good quality NHLers at around 22-23)

EDM Goes Big
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PleaseBanMeForMyOwnGood</b></div><div>If Edmonton doesn't understand that they have massive holes all over their line up that can't be patched with a quick trade, they are hopeless and McDavid is going to want out within 2 seasons. I think they are absolutely going to miss the playoffs again and I think both McDavid and Draisailt are going to get so frustrated with having to carry the whole team that they may even trail off as the season goes by.</div></div>
Agree with much of this. Trading two 1st's + JP for a guy they can just sign as a UFA isn't good business, irrespective of the quality of backup goalie included in the trade. It could be argued that EDM needs a good backup right now (Georgiev can be a 1B and future starter IMO), a couple of things come to mind: they do have several good goalie prospects in the system right now who project as future starters (Konovalov should arrive 2021-22, Rodrigue 2022-23), and they shouldn't make any move for a backup this year until they've first given Starrett a chance to prove himself. He could be a decent backup right now.

See what I mean? 8:53 of 4v5 time last night + 2 full minutes of 3v5. The Oilers allowed just 5 shots on goal and no goals. PK ability is HUGE.
I agree that Cirelli should be a good addition. No idea what the right price is, but I do think he's a good target. And he's the same age as McDavid, so he fits right into the core.

Couple Moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>If these acquisitions were such a good idea, why didn't we do them for free and then get something else for the other assets we're sending? Surely we could get a fourth for Benning from one of the four or five teams strapped for actual NHL-experienced RD's and a seventh for Cave?
And why in the world would we send Chiasson down when we could exile Gagner?</div></div>
Because the Oilers have limited ability to take on more contracts (already have 48 of 50), Holland needs to move out players under contract before considering a waiver claim.
If Bear proves capable of having success with Klefbom during regular season games, and Persson comes back from injury and continues to improve, it's possible Benning may be traded this season. He's a right shot, proven, depth defender with some offensive potential and an affordable and expiring contract. That probably gives him more value than a 4th round pick. Cave should get more than a 7th as well, and may be expendable if Haas can acclimate and succeed.
I agree that Chiasson is a better asset than Gagne. Besides, sending Gagner to Bakersfield is an example of good cap space management.

So just completely ignore his assist totals which are pretty good actually?
The Oilers should claim him, if he doesn't work out he's easy to bury in the minors and not bring back the following season, they need all the free skill they can get.

Yes and no. His signing would make the already redundant Chiasson signing even more redundant, which really looks bad on Holland for offering Chiasson a two year deal.

Yes, Nuge is better then Domi currently. Nuge gets all the hard match ups for the Oilers starts most the time in Defensive zone while Domi got like 60% or more offensive zone starts. Domi did have a really good offensive year though and MTL will be forking over some big dollars if he repeats

Habs-Oilers deal at draft
The thing is, EDM only needs this cap space if they have someone to use it on. if they don't get anyone that can truly help the team now, than they're just wasting Poolparty for pretty much nothing. A trade like this could only happen in late late June or after July 1st and it would mean they have a player they're ready to sign but need to make some cap room quickly in order to fit.
I think its important to note though Habs fans, Russell is by no means a good dman anymore but he is still an NHL'er. He can step into anyone's lineup and give them good bottom 6 minutes. There may not be a ton of interest but there are some GM's who would throw a late'ish pick at EDM for Russell. Manning as bad as he is, has only 1 year left at a low cap hit. He's not really a cap dump. They could just bury him in the minors and only have 900K of cap so its really no that bad.
I think a more modest return would be draft picks instead of Poolparty in this deal. Kind of like Reilly and Hudon (or it could be other players) for Russell, Manning + 2nd 2020 + 4th 2019. Habs lose only players who don't fit their roster anymore plus get draft picks. EDM get projects who may make their roster and tons of cap space to sign a UFA at the cost of a couple draft picks.
In either case, this only happens if EDM needs the cap because they want to sign someone they don;t have the cap currently for.

When the overpaid Phaneuf traded to Ottawa and later the Kings in both times, lots of bad cap came back the team trading Phaneuf. Virtually all these Zaitsev trades, no money is coming back to the Leafs.
I really don't understand these Zaitsev trades. Leafs shouldn't be weakening their defence, they should be trading a winger maybe a centre for cap reasons mostly because. they have capable replacements.

Habs Oilers Nurse
That first oilers trade is brutal. Nurse is a 6'4" fast skating, hard hitting, defensively sound, offensively gifted top 4 dman who's on pace for 42 points this season. If you want him be prepared to give up something of value. I don't see the Oilers giving him up unless you give us a legit top line winger back. Gallagher at least, but even then, I'd rather have nurse, who's still an rfa after this contract. Just being honest. Nurse is just too good to give up unless we get a great return

Habs Oilers Nurse
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoadRunner72</b></div><div>Thanks for the honesty. You may be right, that he's too good to give up. But I don't think the value is all that far off. Maybe the 3rd rounder goes MTL to Edmonton instead. Essentially the Oilers get two young and relatively proven players for the price of one. They have a lot of gaps to fill with competent players, and I have no doubt Lekhonene and Juulsen are both very competent NHL players just a step down from Nurse's level.</div></div>
I think the value is pretty far off if I'm being honest. Nurse is more than a couple steps ahead of those 2 players, and Nurse seems to take a step forward every single year. I think he's without a doubt going to be Edmontons number 1 dman next year. Klef and Larsson are good, but Nurse is already on their level, and he just keeps getting better. But I appreciate your response, and I respect your opinion
