Fitzgeralds big decision
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>He usually struggles with the Nick Ritchies of the world, but he's very good at turning the Bobby McManns or Micheal Buntings into good players...
His biggest problems is that he gives too much responsibility on the young guys on too short of a leash... But I think he's learning little by little</div></div>
One of Lindy’s biggest flaws, other than not being Andrew Brunette, was his lack of flexibility/adaptability. Different players, different situations all call for different solutions. He had his way… and that’s it.
I hope our next guy is green enough not to have “his way” yet.

Agreed. Also dont see a Nylander contract lining up with our core either. Montreal wouldn't do this, but its a fair trade.

Leafs Prospects, Draft Picks and More
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I kinda disagree when on the assumption that the Leafs window is gonna close a few years down the road. Even if Matthews leaves summer of 2029...well that's 13m to spend elsewhere. If teams spend to the cap wisely, the window is always open. Look at the Bruins for over a decade.</div></div>
It is going to close because they haven't been focused on drafting and developing. And they haven't been maximizing their assets.
The reason the Bruins window was extended so long is because from the time it opened in 2001 they have commited to strong drafting, constant retooling and trading away assets.
2001- 2004 they were in the playoffs.
2005 they trade Thornton.
Miss 2 years of playoffs
2007-2014 there were in the playoffs. In that time they traded Kessel and Seguin
2015 Dougie Hamilton trade
2017 - Present back in the playoffs.
It's likely the end of the road now when Marchand falls off and Pasta declines but keeping their picks and making those big deals were key for them.
The Leafs haven't done this. If they had them they would also have a 25+ year window with a few retools.
Imagine if
2017 - Don't trade a 2nd for Boyle in a year we know we are going out in the 1st round.
2018 - Trade Bozak (signed 3x$5M the next summer with St. Louis so likely gets a 1st+) and JVR (signed 5x$7M with Phili so likely gets a 1st+). ALSO don't trade a 2nd for Plekanec.
2020 - Trade Barrie (Dubas said he has offers including a 1st),
2021- Trade Freddie
2022/2023 - Trade Marner or Nylander.
If we do lol of that then we likely sit with a top 5 farm system in the league. And our current team is likely as good maybe even better than what it is today.

Its the reputation and what they have accomplished
Stamkos is a 2 time SC champion, a former rocket, messier winner, a former 60 goal scorer and 1OA pick in 2008
Marner's a guy who in 8 years in the league was just a Selke finalist once. Good playmaker in the regular season but come playoffs disappears
If Stamkos went to Utah Hype would be very real and he would be cheaper to lul
Lets be honest hype for Marner considering all the news would be meh compared to if Utah somehow got Nylander or Matthews</div></div>
As a business owner Marner is 100% the best name to get. He is a genuinely marketable guy to casual audiences in a way Stammer isn't.
Stamkos has a relationship and reputation in TB that won't extend to casual fans in Utah. Marner also has a reputation and he's young, good looking, hosts charity events, loves being involved in the community, giving pucks to kids at warmup. Just go to a Leafs game and see what jersey all the kids are wearing. That's the guy you want. Those kids will drag their parents and friends to the rink.
The player "hardcore" fans think is marketable is never who actually brings in the money.

Totally agree. They have that monster goalie Sogaard but when you have top-end talent available, take it. And those other guys you mentioned who had higher projections have already turned pro and done well for the most part.

Price is set by supply and demand. More scarce items carry higher price.
Top-5 prospects with 2+ years on ELC are never traded…maybe once a decade. (Not to mention one that plays a highly sought after position)
Top wingers are traded every year.
A lot harder to find a Nemec than a big winger.

I've never seen someone trying to overrate a player so bad. 10overall plus a top 4 RHD is pretty good value for a guy who hasn't even hit pp/g and who will most certainly regress even more under green. Sens should sell high but they won't get the value you are expecting

I don't hate Keefe, just didn't think was ready for this market and while he should have been let go at least 2 years ago, that's more on the organization and specifically Shanahan.
And yes,he took more responsibility of the failures of this team than the players did. That doesn't sit right with me because what about when the next coach takes over?
When will it be on the players?</div></div>
Agreed there has to be accountability with the players. That why they need to trade Marner

Posted it in the wrong thread earlier, but I've gotta say that despite all the criticisms against Keefe, I wish him the best. Classy dude who will definitely find work elsewhere.
I'm glad the Leafs are getting a new voice behind the bench, but I'll miss seeing that livid greyhaired man screaming from the bench. That little video he put together was super well said by him.
How much money you guys want to bet that he'll be the Pens assistant coach next season?

Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 7 - Shambles
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Oh I will, when he is the one that made the mistake. But that play is not on him. Rielly and Samsonov shoulder the blame there. Not Marner.
Other things he did definitely deserve scrutiny but certainly not that. It's the same as blaming him for a goal against after a line change when everyone was in good position but mistakes by those players resulted in a goal. The guy wasn't even on the ice.
For the OT winner, had Marner chased pasta, pasta could have back handed it to the point where no one was now defending and the leafs would have been out of position and chasing the play. Who knows what could have happened but in that instance, a dump in from centre to that corner is the defencemans responsibility. Rielly hesitated for a second and changed directions. (Hence why I think he expected the puck to go behind the net). It hits the stanchion and bounces to Pasta who Rielly should have been closer too by then. Samsonov drops to his knees and hugs the post and didn't move until pasta was nearly at the far post.
Samsonov lost focus on that play. He should have stopped it.
It's the picture perfect play as to why he never should have been given the number 1 role. The guy makes saves he has no business making sometimes and that excites people. But then goal 1 and 2 happen. The first goal he was just out of position and the puck went in. If he was square to the shooter it hits him. Woll would have stopped that. Woll would have challenged pasta and either poke checked or slid over in time.
Samsonov I would say cost us more than anyone else apart from Keefe.
And really, anyone expecting high scoring games was ridiculous. Boston doesn't let in much. They defend better than almost every other team. To beat them you have to do exactly what Florida did. Pressure them and force some odd man rushes. Which TO did rarely but look at their goals, most of which were transition plays. Off the cycle they had nothing. But Keefe stuck to that system. Take it up ice, get it into their zone and then maintain possession and cycle until they make a mistake. Well Boston just didn't make any. And their goalie was awesome. Boston didn't make it easy and we Keefe made it easier on them by not adjusting to what they were doing.
As I keep saying, I am not opposed to trading Marner if you get good value. I say this because while it can't be denied he's a world class player, I am not sure he has the mental fortitude to handle TO. So would I trade him? Yes, if I got fair value for him.
If the best we can do is Parayko or some other 2nd pair defenceman who's already 30 years old and signed for another 6 years, then it's stupid to trade him. And you can't let him walk. So if no good trade comes to fruition then you keep him and hope a new coach can employ a better system that provides some offence in the playoffs.</div></div>
Look, you can explain all you want whether Marner had responsibility for Pasta or not but Keefe admitted (I think it was after game 1, not sure) about having Marner out on the ice when Pasta is out there and basically needing Marner to make sure Pasta doesn't get grade A chances.
Thinking of that reminds me how poor a playoff series Marner actually had because Pasta still managed to be a difference maker while our guys couldn't figure it out.

I just think the timing made Matthews look bad when he was the one that set Willy up for a tap in to put the Leafs up G7...
He also didn't even get a chance to touch the ice in OT...
Don't see how you can fault him during those playoffs when he's playing on either a concussion or MCL sprain to go with Food Poisoning</div></div>
That's fair on Woll for sure and generally agree with what you're saying
