(PIT/MTL/SJS) - Granlund, Rutta, Petry, DeSmith, Légaré, 2024 1st (PIT), 2025 2nd (PIT) for Pitlick, Hoffman for Karlsson, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd (SJS)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Are they though? Let's do the math.
Karlsson is owed $39M over the next 4 years. San Jose retained 13%, or $5M. They took back 3 players: Hoffman ($5M), Granlund ($11M) and Rutta ($5M). This trade is costing them $26M in cash over the next 4 years.
If they had simply retained 50% on Karlsson, that would have cost them $19.5M over the next 4 years. So this trade is NOT saving them money.
Here's the other thing: what would the return have been if they had offered to retain 50%? I would think it would be significantly higher in terms of picks & prospects.
Yes they do free up more cap space in year 3 and 4 doing it this way, but with the cap set to rise significantly and SJS not poised to come out of their rebuild any time soon, is this really any use to them?
I don't see any way to couch this as a successful manoeuvr by Grier.</div></div>
Grier wanted cap space and I also don't understand it.
Will be interesting to see what Grier does with the space. In 2 years Grier might make this trade look more favorable.

Go look at last year’s Petry for Matheson thread and see the delusional Pens fans in it. It’s really funny now just like this thread will be hilarious when EK is on IR and this trade looks as bad as it will be.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>1. This is a trade involving the Sharks' franchise player who just happened to win the Norris Trophy as best NHL defenceman recently.
With retained salary for 4 years.
The only piece of any significance that the Sharks got is a Top 10 protected first.
This is not amazing work by San Jose.
2. A lot of the trades that Mike Grier has made as GM have resulted in the Sharks getting the "short end of the stick".
This is yet another example.
3. A player's on-ice performance has just as much weight as the contract to which he is signed.
Erik Karlsson is an elite franchise defenceman that just recently won the Norris Trophy.
He's not just a number on a piece of paper.
The Sharks should have got a first and then some.
4. The Sharks can't buy out Granlund or Rutta until next June.
5. When making a trade, the team decides when the trade happens, not the player.
The team's interests come before that of the player's when making a trade.
A hockey team is made up of 20-23 players, not just one.
I'm amazed I need to spell that out for you.
6. If Karlsson wanted out and there's no good trade to be made, then too bad.
No trade for Karlsson then.
He's under contract until 2027 and the Sharks held his rights until the day he becomes a UFA.
There's no such thing as "forever", so go easy on the hyperbole.
7. Mike Grier is a rookie GM who gets the "short end of the stick" way too often.
That's not exactly an impressive feat.
But you be you.</div></div>
1 - The retained salary is minimal compared to what most people expected.
2 - I don't really have a comment on that one.
3 - It is a combination of both. Karlsson's injury history and performance prior to this season caused there to be a very limited market for him. Instead of saying a Norris winner only got this trade, you should ask yourself what circumstances with the salary cap caused it so that a Norris winner could only get this trade. Look at how many very good players and stars have been given away for nothing. This shouldn't be a shock.
4 - I did not suggest they could, perhaps I should have been more specific. I was referring to the final year on their contract, hence not bringing up Hoffman who will be a UFA at that time.
5 - This is not true. If it was true, we wouldn't have seen Chychrun go to the Senators, or any of the other trades that always happen this way. The reality is that teams risk more by holding on to disgruntled players. I outlined it in a previous post. There is a reason GMs always say "oh man I don't have to trade this guy if I don't get what I want", then the player coincidentally gets traded at a logical deadline (training camp, prior to July 1st, trade deadline, etc) with the GM not getting what they actually wanted.
6 - This is covered in 5. I won't re-iterate my entire previous post. But there are very valid reasons why a player gets moved in these scenarios.
7 - Again, I don't really have a comment on that. I think he did great work to get out of almost the entirety of years 3/4 of a massive contract that has mostly been through to be un-moveable, and to get a 1st round pick.

There's a lot of potential in CBJ, but Buffalo has an established franchise defenseman (Dahlin), a budding elite star (Power), a hugely underrated T4D stalwart (Samuelsson), a former 1st rounder on the bottom pair (Jokiharju), and some high ceiling prospects as well.
Granted Dahlin and Power were placed in their lap with 1st overall picks. And we'll see if Johnson signs. But I don't know how you could put any other stable in the same conversation as Buffalo right now.
And even if we're giving such huge weight to potential, New Jersey has it in bunches. I'd give them the nod over Columbus.

Respectfully disagree. Florida made a blockbuster move in the summer after getting swept in the 2nd round after ending their 1st round drought. Now they are almost guaranteed a spot in the conference finals, and its not like it was an easy road to get there. They had to go through the best regular season team in NHL history and a Toronto team that beat the team who went to 3 straight Stanley cup finals.
You cannot expect different results from a team that has failed time and time again. There needs to be a big move this offseason. Its about time.

McCrimmon and McPhee perhaps just made their Forsberg for Erat trade. Huge cap mismanagement again from Vegas. Foley is already pissed off with the Fleury deal, and this could put both McPhee and McCrimmon and hell even DeBoer on the hot seat if they miss the postseason.
Anaheim, far and away wins the deal as they bolster that lineup. Rakell+ Dadonov additions have been HUGE.</div></div>
I don’t think DeBoer goes, I think the trainwreck of injuries will give him a pass. But even then I don’t see him leading Vegas anywhere in the postseason. McPhee and McCrimmon definitely have a fire lit up under their seats.

Merkley is so bad defensively
Got AHLTV for the full year, been watching Merkley closely, just threw away his 3rd overtime. He has absolutely no idea what to do or where to be, and it isn't just overtime, he floats like he is playing peewee and doesn't battle for the puck ever.
OT loss 1: super casually loses the puck as the last one back and gives easy breakaway goal.
OT loss 2: super casually tries to pick up the puck near the point, gets beat on the puck because he is holding the stick like a child, easy breakaway goal.
OT loss 3: just standing upper slot, lets his man skate right past him to the front of the net, easy tap in goal since Merkley is covering no one.
I was hopeful that we would see his effort improve, since even in the preseason games 2 years ago, he looked much more engage than he does right now, he has all the offense production in the world, but is incapable of defending.

The San Jose Sharks are going to regret not rebuilding sooner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RawZuccSauce420</b></div><div>We're in deep **** and I think the organization is starting to wise up to how dire our future is at this rate. Not sure we ever embrace a full rebuild though. Not going to go too deep into the whole spiel but I think the foundations of your hypothetical game plan are generally the right direction to move in for the club. I'm not sure how long it would take to get back to a legitimately decent team, but accepting that the team we currently have is not gonna do anything meaningful in the future is a good start.
I'm happy to keep Kane and fine with sticking with Karlsson however painful that contract is in the long run, but I wouldn't mind seeing every other core piece go if the price is right. Hertl is one that would make me the most sad, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I could be wrong, but I think at least one (if not both) of Meier and Labanc are outta here by next season as well. And if that's the case, it's absolutely fine by me.
We just need quality > quantity at this rate, and a major overhaul at all 3 positions. Like you said, I'd rather deal with the short-term pain of a rebuild than a future in which we're screwed for years and possibly decades because we refused to acknowledge that this team will never be competitive again without a major refresh.</div></div>
I believe we already are going to regret not rebuilding sooner. Or trading pieces for better younger pieces. But <a href="/users/jfrojelin" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@jfrojelin</a> often points out the coaching problem.
I think Bob is a good coach at times - he seems like a good guy too obviously, and smart. But he’s not a good HEAD COACH. He wasn’t good in Florida and he hasn’t been here. I think he’s better as a part of the coaching staff. We likely won’t see a coaching change but I hope we do. Keep bob and the rest of the guys if you want but a we need a different head. If we can improve our LEAD/ HEAD coach and then keep on the familiar faces who have shown they’re useful. Bob is useful, Nabby is useful. Get a new head coach, either this new coach or someone new for the PP as well.
Then I really hope we change the make up of this team. Trade Donato at draft day as I believe we will make an aggressive trade on draft day. Maybe someone else too. Please expose burns. We can’t have Karlsson and Burns. They’re both fine players still but having two guys who want to be the leader of the OFD doesn’t work. I know merkley is just gonna replace him but Karlsson and Burns both want to be the offensive driver and we’ve seen that it just doesn’t work. If we can put Ferraro with a new 2nd pair (assuming Knyzhov stays with Karlsson) where it’s solely defensive (not 3 pairs of Karlsson, Burns, Merkley) than we can have a shutdown pair.
Knyzhov - Karlsson
Ferraro - New DFD/TWD
Simek - Merkley
Or
Ferraro - Merkley
With Simek getting a new DFD (please not Vlasic)
Then we can actually see if we can get a a pair who we can deploy confidently in our own zone. Karlsson and Burns are either really good or really bad and we can’t rely on a gamble. If we can rely on Simek/ Mario + a new face then we can actually allow Karlsson/ Merkley do their jobs. Right now we’re trying to make Burns and Karlsson be TWD and they just simply aren’t. They’re OFD and they’ll never be good all 82 games. That’s the life of a OFD.
If we don’t sell in the offseason I just truly hope management realizes these new kids can actually carry teams (Barzal, Tkachuk, Norris/ Stutzle, point etc) if you just get 1 hit in the draft that’s young and talented who performs - he can change the entire feel of the team. If we sooner realize that hey don’t need 20 vets but a mix of veterans who are playing around some talented youth we could actually compete again. It won’t be next year (unless things go amazing for Leonard, Bordeleau (somehow), Knyzhov and Ferraro plus our new draft).
We need help in net too obviously but that’s already acknowledged by management and I think they know they’ll need to make changes.
