New Take
Sandin is instantly a top 4 D for you guys. Handedness matters sure, talent and potential matters more. Kerfoot has value to your lineup slots in your middle 6 and can easily be flipped for a 2nd next TDL.
Sandin (a Top 4 D), a 1st, two 2nd's for JT Miller is great value for a pending UFA. While it may take more to get a deal done, its a framework that largely makes sense (whether canucks fans agree or not).
Miller is on an expiring deal and will not be re-signed. Other GMs know this. You are not getting the insane trade value you seem to think he has.
I saw this the other day and couldn't agree more (paraphrase) - "you could make a trade on ACGM of Matthews or McDavid for JT Miller and you'd still have canucks fans whining about value, fit, handedness"
Lol

Lol I know.
You canucks fans always say he is a part of the process then people point out his brutal track record for the last decade then you turn around and say he isn't the GM as a counter point. Can't have it both ways.
I think in reality any key moves need to have his blessing but are consummated by Allvin.

Miller traded to TOR
I suggested Sandin, Kerf, 1st, 2nd & 3rd - was shredded by canucks fans for it being way too little. 2nd, 3rd and sandin surely have same value if not more than Niemela.
Appreciate the realistic trade! apart, from muzzin who won't move his ntc for Van.
Framework is there.

What you want and what you get often diverge in the trade market, wouldn't take the magic number of 4 assets as gospel. He will try to get the best value possible, as any GM does - could be 3 pieces could be 4.
I think more than anything the Kapanen deal cemented Rutherford has a fairly spotty track record valuing assets & trading (and drafting for that matter). He's no doubt past his best before date.
Regardless, Its a fair proposal for Miller and may or may not be enough to get it done.

Rutherford's idea of commensurate value for Kapanen was the 15th overall pick lol. I don't think you should be excited about his idea of commensurate value

OEL is a very solid shutdown D now. His contract isn’t ideal but we are stuck with him so he isn’t moving. Rathbone is an elite prospect, with higher offensive ceiling than Sandin. Dermott, sure Sandin beats, but Rathbone will be in the lineup next season and will leave no room for Sandin. If he’s so good, just keep him and give us Liligren, then both sides can be happy</div></div>
I really hope the canucks trade Miller just to see how salty all you simply delusional canucks fans will be at the actual realistic return

Refer to my previous comment. Sandin >>> Dermott, rathbone. In 2 years he's a far superior D to an aging OEL as well.
Just because you have 1 stud and 3 mediocre LD doesnt make your GM unwilling to upgrade on the position

Possible it gets bid up but the framework is there.
Seen some canucks fans make the LHD point. No GMs think this way. Sandin is immediately a top 4 D for you and is a long term solution behind Hughes. Sure for one season you may have an awkward fit with someone playing their offside but he's a building block for any defence corps for the future. Don't see him having less value in a trade simply because he shoots left.

TO ALL CANUCKS FANS - please re-evaluate your miller asks. he is getting MAXIMUM one first rounder and ONE blue chip prospect.
For leafs deal that means -
Sandin OR Niemela
1st rounder
B prospect or 2nd rounder

I think you're overthinkign this. Whether you like it or not Muzzin will be moveable for a price (especially if he plays well this year).
Not gonna spend much more time on this but in a vaccum yes I agree a 31 yr old UFA is typically a bad investment. The elite talents in the league are still a good investment at that age. Miller should be a good investment for the majority of the contract.
On the macro scale, this core will likely be gone by the time that contract starts to be an albatross. That's the unfortunate reality of the cap world. Load up for your window then spend a year or so getting rid of your bad contracts and build it back up again.

Struggling to see how thats a bad idea.... exactly the type of player tavares needs to succeed. yes, Muzzin will be moveable he only has a 10 team no-trade list and is only owed $2M in actual salary.
Those types of contracts are traded every single offseason lol (with sweeteners depending on his play this year)

We re-sign him hopefully. Nice addition to the core, look at the long term outlook here, not terribly difficult to re-sign him if you shuffle some things around. Don't forget Muzzin is moveable next off-season. thats 5.625 Million right there... you hopefully have Knies and Robertson backfilling forward depth by then too

lol exactly like the legendary Jeremy Bracco. Some forget he did actually have value for a while though.
More like a 3rd rd pick or an Anderson/Abramov type.
Dont understand why some people think a $1 million buyout per year is worth a 1st for the receiving team. 2nd or 3rd rounder equivalent. If yotes arent willing to take that value then I assure you someone will. Most fans here just hate the leafs and exaggerate how bad a contract it is to move. GMs are in the business of making their teams better, not hating on the leafs. If they can get decent value to then go buy him out - they take it.

This is the type of thinking that got Benning fired - your only stud on D is Hughes. Sandin has top 4 potential for the next decade.
You never draft or buy futures based on need. You take the value and sure might be an awkward fit for the year but he would already slot in your top 6 defence...
Also, diversity of traits on a roster is important yes but the NHL moved on from "small" and "big" to classify defencemen years ago.

Best guess Leafs
Not really sure what Canucks fans expect for a 1 year rental regardless of his quality. They will be lucky to make the playoffs next year, let alone make a run and don't have the space to re-sign him. No GM with that quality of a roster would ever let an asset like that walk for nothing at this stage of his team's development.
Tinker around the edges here and I think that easily gets this done (add a niemela or a 1st instead of the 2nd or 3rd). I know he's been on fire last couple seasons but lets not forget in June 2019 he was Traded from Tampa Bay Lightning to Vancouver Canucks for Marek Mazanec, round 3 pick in the 2019 draft (Hugo Alnefelt) and round 1 pick in the 2020 draft (Shakir Mukhamadullin).
This price is more than double that. For one year of control, not 4 years as it was then.
The Canucks were close to pulling a deal with the rangers at the deadline for essentially Nils Lundkvist, a first round pick, and Filip Chytil.
This is a superior deal with the quantity of picks involved. Not sure why Canucks fans seem to think his price is going up the closer he gets to UFA.
