We'll never know I guess, since it was the new sheriff in town that re-signed him, to a contract that I'm not really sure makes sense. Some point to that signing as being further evidence to suggest Dubas would not have made the same amount of change to the roster that Treliving is currently going about doing

Considering where Morgan Geekie, Nicolas Roy, and even the likes of Jake Bean, and Joey Keane are, I'm not sure how much faith I have in Carolina's ability to develop players. Sure, a couple of those guys became impact players, but they reached another step AFTER leaving the Hurricanes organization. Whatever the case, having a disciplined and stingy on ice system run by your coach with the big club is still largely a separate entity from the workings of the AHL club

If Pearson comes back and performs well even in a limited sample size, I don't think you'd have trouble getting at least a late round pick for him at worst, but he has to come back and play well first, which is still a murky proposition as we all know

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aedoran</b></div><div>He has never excelled defensively but he tries to be responsible defensively. With a partner who isn't strong defensively he won't take as many chances. He was paired with Maatta for a good portion of last season and Hronek had his best season offensively and Maatta made him look pretty good defensively.</div></div>
I don't think anybody was ever under the impression that Hronek is Brett Pesce or Chris Tanev, and yeah, he ideally shouldn't be the one carrying the bulk of the defensive load on a 1st or 2nd pair, but he also doesn't leave it to his partner to literally have his back ever second they're out on the ice

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cooliny</b></div><div>$6M is like a Pesce/Hanifin/Forsling/Skjei type of defenceman. But you make a good point on keeping the picks but not having a 100% chance you sign those guys, or guaranteeing a Hronek with RFA rights for the picks.
Personally I’m fine with the trade, the Canucks want to compete next season, so acquiring Hronek accomplishes that.</div></div>
I think Hanifin and Forsling are pretty comfortably 6+M dollar defenders, but I go back and fourth on whether or not Pesce and Skjei are as well, definitely 5+M in terms of market value, not to mention the cap being expected to take it's first big jump since the pandemic

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Thet's a good point. But the Canucks are likely dot finish out of the playoffs with Hronek at 4.4m, now his contract is up next summer, and let's say he gets paid 6m.
Now could they have found a 6m Dman and kept the picks? :That's always the issue when trading picks is the pick going to be cost efficient NHLer on his 1m ELC.?</div></div>
Canucks are not LIKELY to miss the playoffs, they're at worst a coin flip. Hronek is also a pending RFA, not a pending UFA, and ELC's don't last forever, and furthermore, are rarely capitalized on while they are in effect for core players

Off-season off stasis
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>This wasn't an absolute value, it was a relative comparison. Myers is still a slight positive asset, but his age, not-so-good recent play, and AAV (which is still a factor) aren't helping to boost his value. I'm arguing that a 25-year-old RD on a reasonable contract with term coming off a career year is a better asset than a 33-year-old RD with a higher AAV on the decline. That's not an absurd take. You could flip Myers half-retained at the deadline to a contender for a 3rd round pick in all likelihood.
It's a similar argument with Roslovic. In this case, both are overpaid, are about the same age, and score at strikingly similar rates. But Roslovic plays a more valuable position, and even though it's pretty evident Garland is the better player overall, he makes nearly $1M more for 2 more years than Roslovic. It's more valuable to have an expiring "bad" contract at 3C than a lengthy more expensive contract for similar production at 3RW.
Besides, you sent both to a team whose last two needs are RD and middle-6 winger. You'd get better value sending them elsewhere. The only thing that's "way out of touch" is thinking that CBJ would view this as an even swap that somehow fills positional needs.</div></div>
Thanks for that, finally someone who can be bothered to come up with a reasonable take regarding the Blue Jackets, the only thing I might quibble with is whether or not Peeke's contract is truly reasonable, even if it's more efficient than Tyler Myers at 6M by a good quarter-mile, not a country mile, but a quarter-mile. Of course we know what a low bar that is

Off-season off stasis
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dk325</b></div><div>As much as you might not want to believe it, they have a pretty good forward situation for the forseeable future. Gaudreau, Laine, Fantilli, KJ, and Marchenko are locked in as top 6 guys. Today Jenner is the 6th, but if they get another solid top 6C then he gets pushed to a 3rd line role and likely on the wing. Voronkov or Sillinger are the likely 3C of the future and then they've got Texier, Chinakhov, LDBB, Brindley, and Dumais left to fight for the remaining 3W spot. Why would you bring a $5M player into that situation when the internal options have far better potential and are mostly on ELCs?</div></div>
Fair point, but not all of those guys are gonna pan out, and everybody already knows that Columbus's forward outlook is the least of their worries

Two defensemen whom I consider to be similar if not identical caliber of players, but slightly different skillsets. Samuelsson of course is more physical, while Pettersson is more mobile, but they both do most of the work in the defensive zone relatively well

I agree, if you wanna look for a dry prospect pool, look no further than Boston, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Colorado, Tampa Bay, and Vegas. Some of which have legitimate excuses to be as bereft of upcoming talent as they are, while the same can't be said about those other teams

Definitely better with Hronek, even if he isn't as productive offensively next season, and even taking projected timelines out of it, he definitely helps to create a more balanced back end than Sandin-Pelikka would. Canucks probably take Colby Barlow with pick no. 17, and as nice of an addition he'd theoretically be, wingers can only earn so much credence with regard to the organization's on-ice personnel priorities since the team is already exceptionally deep at wing already
