Roster going into playoffs
Toronto declines………
Don’t want Crouse, have Engvall already who fits better in this lineup.
Want Dermott as 3rd pairing or depth guy
Would like to upgrade Holl but Murphy not available for realistic price, not to mention the hawks are not retaining that much for 4 years.

Really?… a first rounder (probably about number 15) plus Olson seems fair.
What do I have to add, would Debrusk do it?

That’s too much from an already strong starting lineup with Fiala plus Greenway for Hertl
Bratt will not be moved by New Jersey and nit for a 28 yr old who couldn’t play in Arizona plus a 22 yr old Center. They have a couple of those

Hey feel free to disagree but the oil then have 8 million dollars they can spend. They don’t have the budget in Edmonton that the leafs do to absorb that hit.
Maybe it’s a second instead of a first. The point is the leafs sign Hyman and trade him. Plus the leafs take Klefbom contract off oils hands.

Edmonton can then sign Hyman at 5.15 million versus 5.50 million on the cap. Plus they unload 8.3 million they hav3 to pay Kefblom over the next 2 years.
Leafs gave up a first to unload Marleau for 1 year, why wouldn’t Edmonton do same. They save 8 million real dollars and 500,000 a year versus cap for the Hyman contract.
With that 4 million maybe they sign another free agent. A guy like Hoffman would be a great start on a decent 2nd line, plus 2 nd power play and could be had for 4 x 4 million.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jaok3</b></div><div>with that bottom 6 they would be hard pressed to make the playoffs. If you sign Hamilton you have to trade Rielly because the leafs have no use for him. You get a 3 million forward and trade Engvall for a bag of pucks. That gives you 3.3 million to sign Jamie Oleksiak</div></div>
Agree it isn’t an ideal bottom six but not as bad as you make it.
Agree that Reilly will have to go eventually.
Love your oleksiak signing.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boomer125</b></div><div>Your description is muttled nonsense. Nylander is not overpaid that's been well proven at this point. Marner is 2 million overpaid I'll give you that. I am curious how not good defensively Hamilton is without Slavin on his left side? Slavin has been and is the number 1 in Carolina not Hamilton</div></div>
Nylander is overpaid, not nearly as much as Marner but overpaid. He makes more then any of Boston’s top line, more then Braden Point a good player but over paid. Marner is of course good but also overpaid making more then stamens, kucherov and pretty much anyone else in the league. These guys took the money, maybe you or I would too, but the end result is that Dubas now doesn’t have the budget left over to fill out the rest of the roster as needed.
They are going to lose perhaps all of Hyman, Kerfoot and Andersen because of this.
The lineup is top forward heavy and the current back end mix isn’t good enough to get it done.

Actually kerfoot also plays center. Try to pay attention to what was written, this could be Martinez, Dumba, Brodin or any other available players, UFA or by trade. The goal was to find out what had to be lost to fill the obvious holes on Defense this summer. Maybe they sign. UFA and trade 2 guys for picks, maybe they make a hockey deal.

You know I specifically said this was not about the trade for Dumba or the signing of Muzzin It could be for any defenseman that makes about that money. I wanted to see how it affected the leafs cap going forward if the added 2 guys for about 11 million.
Now as for the Dumba trade, that’s a first, and 2 young forwards both signed to reasonable contracts for about the same term as Dumba. Maybe it takes another draft pick, maybe not. It’s exactly what the Wild need......2 roster players plus draft picks.

So I also looked forward a year and it could work.
In 21/22 you would have 10,000,000 assuming an increase in cap space of 2,000,000
Anderson gets say 6,500,000 for 4 years.....Spezza 1,000,000...leaving about 2,500,000 and just Hyman to sign. At that point you move Engvall up and save that money for someone else and to resign Reilly and Sandin the following year.

With Engvall now signed I wanted to look at next year and see how Dubas can fit the oft talked Dumba trade in under the cap while still signing most of the relevant roster.
I have based a bunch off Engvall’s number with mikehyev and Clifford being slightly higher and Spezza, gauthier and timashov slightly lower. I think these are all reasonable.
Dermott gets the same as holl. This seems reasonable.
Muzzin gets a raise to 5000000 and 3 years to stay close to Woodstock with a team he likes. Yes I think he turns down more elsewhere and yes he might sign for more term.
The only way we can sign or trade for a 6000000 defenseman is to get rid of equal salary. That means nylander or 2 of kerfoot, johnsson, kapanen would need to go. If it was me I would get rid of nylander but Dubas seems set on not breaking up that group of top 4.
I am sure minny fans will say this is not enough for Dumba or that he will never be traded. That may be, but I wanted to see what had to realistically happen salary wise to make it work.

Georgiev for the second.
I think your over estimating what you will get for Georgiev. His history is very similar to Talbot who the rangers traded for a second.

I looked and it turns out the rangers do have a young RHD, in fact they have two. Fox and dangelo.
Fox is a non starter I assume.
So how about, kapanen + Bracco + leafs 2nd round pick (2020 or 21)
For
Georgiev and D’Angelo
Georgiev is the 2nd round pick and kapanen + Bracco for D’Angelo

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jfstompers</b></div><div>I just think if Toronto would move 2 good youngish wingers they can get a stud dman.</div></div>
I basically agree. In this case we are discussing losing 2 roster players. Johnsson a top 6 and Kapanen a top 9 player. Both are signed to reasonable contracts. It’s exactly what Edmonton needs. Problem is they don’t come free and to give them up the leafs need to fill the defensive cupboard. Larsson has proven he isn’t that guy and certainly not worth the two forwards.
Puljujarvi is a huge risk and may never even play in nhl again. I personally see him as worth little more then a Bracco or Timashov.
To trade both we would want the defensive equivalent being 2 young guys. Bear and Jones may be “untouchable “ but that is a fair equivalent.
Carolina for Hamilton or Pesce seemed to make some sense last summer but that’s never happen now.
It’s a shame Rangers don’t have a young RHD that they could package with Georgiev in exchange for Kapanen + Bracco + a pick or two.

I don’t hate a move like this in the off season but think not before deadline. Leafs are more likely to want 2 defenders back for those forwards. Maybe Bear rather Larsson. Throw in Caleb Jones and keep the picks. I can’t see Edmonton moving Bear so it’s a non starter.
I see a trade with Minnesota for Dumba as more likely were they moving those 3.

Yuck......explain to me why we would sign a guy for 6x5 who plays on one of the worst defences in the league.
I say they would be better resigning UFA Jake Muzzin, probably for less and keeping Kapanen and Bracco to trade for another guy.

Huh?....
Georgiev is worth at best a middle round pick. Like a 3 rd or 4 th rounder. At no point did I say he was worth a first.
Kreider might be worth a first at trade deadline. It’s arguable but I can see that.
IMO kapanen is worth about the same, he was a first rounder, is signed for 3 more years at a reasonable amount, kills penalties, can play Top 6 role for rangers for rangers foreseeable future.
If you prefer a 3rd and a 1st pick for both guys I would do that but need to move a salary to do it. I’m sure Edmonton would take kapanen in a trade to handle that salary.
