Will they have a D core
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Couple things
1. I would not spend 5x5 on Hamonic if I were you
2. Yes the leafs have the cap next year but as a GM you cant be thinking 1 year at a time. Look at Colorado "oh they have so much cap space why don't they get Hall in the off season for 11M." Well aure they have cap now but over the next 3-4 years they dont really have any bad contracts coming off the books and a lot of players will need raises. Girard's 5M contract kicks in, Burakovsky and Zadorov need raises next year. 2 years from now Landeskog and Grubauer need a raise, Makar meeds a massive raise. Then 3-4 years, MacKinnon, Kadri, Donskoi, Byram, etc.
The Leafs dont have any dead weight contracts coming in the next 3 years either yet Rielly and Andersen likely both need raises. Yes the leafs have the room for a RD next year but they should be careful on how much they spend.</div></div>
To be honest, I have no idea what an appropriate contract for Hamonic will look like so I aimed high because my overall purpose was to show everyone talking about how the Leafs have no one on D next year and no cap space to spend, is just plain wrong. I know that there's more to look at long-term, I just wanted to show that there's a lot more panic short term than there should be and even if they lose all of Barrie, Muzzin, and Ceci (obviously not actually a loss), their D core will be fine for next year.

Going forward
That Dermott deal would have fantastic value for the Leafs if he agreed to it, same with the Muzzin contract. I can't see Mikheyev getting a number that big or that long, Kerfoot, Johnsson and Kapanen will probably all be fairly comparable players and the biggest deal of those three was 4x3.5M. I think it's likely Timashov, Goat, Holl and maybe even Marincin come back for less than $1M each to fill in around the edges like you have. Can't see Hyman getting traded though, coach's favorite and as long as he doesn't have an extension in place before the expansion draft he won't really need to be protected as a UFA who could come right back.

I think it's more likely Liljegren stays on the Leafs for more than 9 games. Sandin's contract can slide another year and Babs will want his right shooting defenceman.

Games 51-82
I like the idea of dumping Ceci to replace him, I think if he plays with Rielly all season he'll have more value than that for him to go to a contender (probably not COL cause they're pretty loaded on D). I think Spurgeon makes more sense though as his team will probably be significantly worse than the Blues.

Marner v Keller tax considerations
To me, 8x9.5 has always made sense as it's exactly in line with what other top wingers in the league (Kucherov & Stone) have signed for recently. You want direct comparables, there they are. All this being said, you can't stop the fact the Marner camp wants to pick and choose its comparables.

Order of events without Marner at puck-drop
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jamiepo</b></div><div>This is not true... although your plan will not work because you can not add more than 23 players to the roster. I would assume that Dermott and Hyman start on ltir. Every day marner misses he will have less and less room as the daily cap hits of both Horton and clarkson are on the books. I think the ultimatum will be put in place.</div></div>
The 23 player limit doesn't kick in until right before the season starts so this isn't an issue at all as my plan involves sending everyone down right beforehand.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>hanson493</b></div><div>"The ACSL is only calculated when a team first enters LTIR, if a player is placed on LTIR while another player is already on LTIR, the ACSL is not recalculated." right from cap friendly cba on ltir.</div></div>
I read this before which is why I moved Horton first, his 5.3M hit sets the ACSL at 86.8M. So when Clarkson goes on when there is an 86.75M cap hit they are still good for the full relief (I think). The ~$92M cap hit scenario doesn't work either because it's more than 81.5+10%.

Hmm okay. So they could wait to put Horton on, call everyone extra up and move them both over when the total cap hit is $92.05M??

Personally, I don't think he is better. If I was running the ship I would give Sparks a real chance playing 1 out of every 3 games. I don't think Babs will do that though. This is purely to please Babs at least somewhere on the otherwise Dubas friendly team.

Rumor is that Gards really wants to be in Toronto, I can see him signing for this AAV if it's over 7 or 8 years and he's still guaranteed big money long term. (Obviously wouldn't be a good deal for the Leafs but with his back, he could easily be an LTIR contract that could even go to Seattle in the expansion draft to help them hit the floor.)

Freeing up TO space and then freeing up some of our own
Hate to break it to you, but it's not possible to trade retained salary. The Leafs also have no reason to trade Horton away and definitely won't give up Kappy (who they just signed to a great bridge deal) in a trade that doesn't bring back a high-end RD option.

If they have a chance maybe. Depends on how well Barrie fits with the team IMO. He's 2 years younger so if you can keep him longer and he fits well with that top four I think the Leafs keep him.

Marchment had a big playoff performance and a lot of Marlies reporters smarter than me have him as the readiest Marlie. Miller is cheaper than Zaitsev, and Zaitsev doesn't mesh well with Rielly. I think the first priority for Dubas (after Marner) is do get someone who can play with Rielly and that Babs /will/ play with Rielly.

If you send a player (probably Engvall) down before Hyman comes off, there's room to still carry two spares. I had to put him on LTIR in order to pull Engvall up so it works when Engvall goes down. Zaitsev could be traded for "Future Considerations" as far as I care, I just picked a team that I think will have an interest.

IMO the Leafs are giving up a lot here. I think Kadri for Trouba 1-for-1 is fair so the rest of the trade isn't balanced for me. I like the idea of getting Roslovic to fill the 3C hole especially since it seems like he is unhappy in WPG but I think it could get done with a prospect or two (cheaper for WPG and their cap-crunch) and/or picks rather than Muzzin+.
