It would depend on where Kapanen's Cap it fell. As mentioned by someone else, losing both Kap and Willy would be tough for the organization.

HMMMM
That Zaitsev trade is interesting. I've seen a lot of people trading him for LTIR contracts but never Detroit until now. My understanding is that they aren't exactly short on cash in Detroit so I don't know that they're in a huge rush to move their LTIR contracts. I also think if you're swapping Zaitsev for two dead contracts you definitely don't need to add any more.

Regardless of what Marner "wants" / his agent has fed to Dregger to put out into the world, if you're going to use evolving wild for the rest of the contract projections, why not use it for Mitch too?

If you pay him you have to move Nylander
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>nchest</b></div><div>It is not a one for one trade if you read my comments. Toronto has to add to get Pesce but nothing from the roster, picks and prospects. Carolina has depth at RD and needs offence. The Leafs have depth on offence and RW but need defence. This might not be the exact trade but the key pieces.</div></div>
I think the point was that you're significantly over-paying Marner and if that's where the number falls it actually makes more sense to keep Nylander and trade Marner.

IMO, the Leafs trade is very fair, Leafs get a depth RD that they desperately need and Brown has the speed and will to get the puck to McDavid and Draisaitl.

If Marners camp wont play ball
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rusty_Shackelford</b></div><div>Let a team offer sheet Marner. No team would ever pay a player 10.5+ and give up 4 1st round picks. Colorado currently doesn't have their 2020 3rd round pick so they couldn't offer sheet Marner at the 2nd tier(2-1sts, a 2nd, and 3rd). Marner is worth what someone is willing to pay. Unfortunately for him, he's not unrestricted. So only the Leafs can sign him without having to pay extra.</div></div>
Totally agree with this, if Marner's camp wants to play hard-ball, let them try to get an offer-sheet, and as long as it's the top tier (keep in mind the AAV is calculated by dividing by 5 years if it's a 6 or 7 year deal) and you take the four 1sts and let him walk.

Leafs next year keeping Marleau
Personally, I think your number for Marner is high for a 5-year deal.
I really like the looks of those D Pairs (especially that each rookie is paired with a vet), but with Dermott already out to start the season, I don't think Babs is willing to put two rookies in to start. I think it's more likely that Liljegren, Rosen, and Holl (I realize you traded him) are in to start the season and Sandin comes up halfway through the season like Dermott did in his first year.

They would still need to shed ore as they don't have a back-up goalie or any scratches to have with them.

My FINAL leafs roster creation until July 1st
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jamiepo</b></div><div>So if I get this straight... we lose kapanen and two thirds to upgrade zaitsev to Miller? Not sure that’s the best asset management. I’ve done and seen a lot of Agm’s moving zaitsev and we always end up spending nearly the same amount on another Dman to replace him and give up valuable assets along the way.</div></div>
Look at those two deals as independent from each other. Kappy for an RHD is very realistic in my opinion, the picks could be whatever swap necessary to even the value. I also don't think the Leafs would need to add anything in a Zaitsev deal if it's just for an LTIR contract.

Off-season Regroup
Really like most of the trades, not the Kadri one though, I think he's had an off year but is a vital part of the core and will have a big playoff series against Boston to prove it.
In terms of the signings, the Marner one is probably close to what it would be for 3 years. I really think Dubas will squeeze Johnsson and Kapanen to sign lower money one-year deals, allowing them to compete for Marleau's money next year (this also makes it easier to keep Kadri). I also don't see Dubas going after DSP, as happy as it would make Babcock, but subbing him out with either a prospect or an Ennis-type doesn't change your cap picture really.

Vancouver Canucks signed Quintin Hughes (3 Years / $1,604,167 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rebecca</b></div><div>Story is he signed on condition of burning off a year of his ELC. Otherwise he would return to college next year. Not crazy about the strategy to willingly a burn off a year of an ELC, esp with the way RDA salaries have escalated in the past year. He has 3 more years til he would become an UFA and I doubt he would hold out that long. Would he stay out of NHL and risk injury for next season (and 2 more after) regardless? Unlikely. GMs in the NHL need to start showing more backbone with players with no leverage. ??♀️</div></div>
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he needs to play in at least 10 games in order to burn a year off of his ELC, otherwise it would slide. With only 13 games left, one would hope that management would give him a 9 game try-out and allow his contract to slide and therefore, begin next year.

This Might Work Part 2
Kapanen would need to have a HUGE year to earn that kind of contract in my opinion. Personally, I can see him getting $5M and Dermott getting $4M on a slightly different term. That kind of change doesn't impact your bottom line though.
I also think that in another year one of Moore, Bracco, or Petan will be able to play top-9 minutes and adding a UFA forward in someone like Kreider won't be necessary, maybe that money could be used on the blueline for more help, or Johnsson would get a bigger slice of the pie (see my comment on part 1 as well).

I REALLY like the trade idea, I've looked at teams like CBJ and NYR in similar AGM trades I've done and think it works really well for both teams.
I like the signings for the most part. As much as I would love to have Ennis back at that number, for his sake, I really hope he can go get paid somewhere else and rewarded for rejuvenating himself this season. I also can't see Dubas going out to get a McQuaid or McQuaid-like player, BUT I can definitely see him going after a more Dubas-type veteran RD for a similar number (not sure who it would be off the top of my head). Two other small things: I think Petan will be 50-100K less but on a one-way deal and Johnsson does actually have arbitration rights so I can see that resulting in a one year deal instead of two. That would also put pressure on both him and Kappy to compete for a share of Marleau's money.

There's no chance Leafs carry 20 players next year. it just doesn't happen.
It's pretty doubtful we are paying someone $2m+ to play on our 4th line next year.</div></div>
I agree completely, and there’s definitely cap that can be shed here, I was just trying to see what was possible.

That Vatrano contract is great for the leafs
Personally, I think the numbers for Sparks and Oz are about 100G higher than they would be but that's minuscule. Don't see Johnsson taking more than 2 years at that number especially if Kappy only gets one, he bet on himself this year by accepting his QO and I can see him doing similar next year now that he's really emerging.
I know you weren't making trades but I think this just shows the likely hood that Zaitsev and possibly Brown are shipped out over the summer to save space.

It's not that Leafs fans want to get rid of Brown (Personally I'm a big fan) but there isn't really room for him in the top 9 and the sense is that someone making $1M less could fulfill a similar role on the fourth line. Small savings but it gives Dubas just a little more wiggle room next year.

I did an ACGM yesterday with Brown, Johnsson, and Zaitsev for Kreider and McQuaid. Do you think that gets it done? maybe add a pick or two somewhere. <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1053820">https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1053820</a>

Leafs might not have to add if they allow Vegas to talk with Gardiner's agent about an extension and feel they could get one done. If he's a pure rental, then yeah they would definitely have to add something in.
