He hasn't had a full off season since his rookie season. Cancer, shoulder, and then military duty.... and he's still our best defensive skater right now. He's young, cheap, and less of a risk than Landeskog, who has how much left on his contract? If Landeskog is a bust then the Pens are really screwed. The worst you get from Maatta is a Dman that will help keep picks out of the Av's net, and by the looks of things, they can sure use that right now.
Giving DP and a pick is ridiculous. Maatta for Landeskog straight up, and I wouldn't be opposed to the Avs adding.

And doesn't matter who they trade Fleury to. Calgary, Dallas... whoever. I just sent him to Toronto cause we're good at ripping them off.

Best Team Under cap Challenge: For guy who thinks you play 22 players a night
Good job. Now if Conner McJesus takes a puck to the face in the pre-game warm up, you aren't playing the game with 19.

LOL are you serious? Do you watch hockey? You can only dress 20 players a night and Im not going to make a team with healthy Scratches thank you very much, So How about you take your innacurate comments elsewhere. :)</i></div></div>
What? I don't even know where to start.
You can dress as many players as you want as long as you are under the cap. Scratches take the ice, the pre-game skate and are dressed all the way until the puck drops.
Why?
What if someone gets injured during the warm up? Or gets injured during a long road trip during a back-to-back game situation. Think that farm call-upis going to be 100% at a moments notice flying 6 hours across North America?
You need at least one extra player and that extra player has to fit under the cap.
All teams carry at least 21 players under the cap. Most 22 or 23.
Once the puck drops, yes, 20 man roster. But up until then you need the insurance of "healthy scratches".

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mhockey91</b></div><div><i>After Watching this game I agree 100%. Cole looks much more like he did last season. Lol. After watching what game? The Penguins beating up on an out-of-the-playoff-picture Arizona team that just sold their best forward? BECAUSE THAT SHOULD BE A GOOD INDICATOR!
The facts are that since Head Coach Mike Sullivan took over, the Pens have played 18 teams that are currently in a playoff position. Of those 18 games, they have lost 12. That's a 33% win rate against playoff teams.
Have your fun, drink your beers... but at the end of the day... Trashing all over a bad team is meaningless and the Pens still can't beat good teams.

GMJR is not that dumb.
" He isn't gonna be great forever. Keep the younger talent and be rid of the older. "
Ummmm what are you talking about? Goalies aren't wingers. The typical goalie doesn't normally hit their peek until about 32. 30 year old for a goalie is still young. All the greats played until their 40s and lead cup teams late in their careers. Brodeur and Osgood come directly to mind from this era of goalies. It's a positional and mental position, not physical. Flower, if stays healthy, will be solid until hit late 30s.
I'm not saying trade Murray, but a little more common knowledge please.

I care less about the goals and more about the overall play. His play has improved considerably. The goals will come with time. Just the other night he had 2 empty nets he missed on. He was at the right place, doing the right things, but he isn't capitalizing yet. That'll change though</i></div></div>
If Phil Kessel isn't scoring goals then he's not doing what he's paid to do.
He is paid big money to score a lot of goals, not to be an all-around player (WHICH HE ISN'T ANYWAYS). We could have numerous other players in the league, at half his salary, that can play 2 way hockey. Kessel needs to be a 40 goal scorer. But as it is he's a ghost on the ice. The only time you notice him is when he making a defensive blunder.

Humbug! Fending Off Offer Sheetz (For Hibbits)
I mean, theoretically it works, but I just don't see that line up being any different than this year. You're basically relying on players that are in slumps snapping out of it next year and perform up to their paycheck. Also, that Bennett and Letang can actually stay healthy.
Plots doesn't have a goal this season. Not sure why he's 6 top material.
Cullen had been a bright spot for us, not sure Sundqvist performs that well but playing him is the right thing to do.
Idk. Just not a lot of options.

Really not a huge concern.</i></div></div>
First, who says the cap will go up? Russia and Canada's currency are in the shitter, those are large markets for the NHL. It may raise for inflation, but 2 million is really optimistic.
And second, then how does the team above differ any from the team we have on the ice now? The non-playoff team. All of those players are a year older and a year slower. And you are depending on literally the worst prospect pool in hockey to fill 6 or 7 gaps?
So glad you aren't concerned. Good for you.</i></div></div>
Not 100% but I believe the CBA mandates a minimum 5% increase.
That "worst prospect pool" has one of the best records in the AHL (and that team doesn't even have Sprong). If you're so worried about how old most of our team is, shouldn't you want some of those young, fast players on the roster??
Say what you will about GMJR, but he assembled a team that should be a cup contender this year. It's not his fault that at different times Crosby/Malkin/Kessel/Horny/Kunitz/Bonino/Perron have not lived up to their typical production.</i></div></div>
Um... that's the AHL. Rarely does a team have their top prospects playing AHL hockey, nor does AHL hockey and the typical goonery that goes on translates to the NHL. Usually the kid opts to stay in their junior league and GOOD prospects are usually NHL ready coming out of juniors. For instance, Sprong does not play in Wilkes Barre and neither did Kappy and Sundqvist last year. And often players are still considered prospects even if they are playing in the NHL (like Despres/Pouliot were).
Just go google power rankings for prospect pools in the NHL. We are at the bottom of every list. Highest I've seen was 20 but that was before trading Kapanen and Harrington.
But generally yes, we need to get younger. We don't have the talent in our system to do it yet.

Why does Maatta sign so low? A lot of teams would love to offer-sheet him for a lot more.
They can offer him 5 million and only have to give up a 1st and 3rd if we don't match. I think Maatta is worth that to a dozen different teams.
