Defence and Size to win now and insulate skill
I don't think Montreal has any interest in trading Pezzetta, especially if we aren't getting anything substantial. A player who has more value to Montreal than they could get for him.

Toffoli for Monahan is just a bad concept. Monahan's struggles on Calgary means he will be worse on Montreal, on top of only being here for 1 year. It doesn't fit a rebuild and it doesn't make the team better now.
Armia is a strong and versatile player that can keep either of your bottom 6 lines afloat and take defensive responsibilities. His value is being good enough that it frees up your top lines without the risk of being overwhelmed by the other team's top lines. If you can afford him, he's a good asset to have, but his contract could limit his market as players like Lehkonen don't require as substantial of a commitment.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs696969</b></div><div>Everything you are saying is true. What I have been reading though is that chiarots market is picking up and he will be going before the trade deadline but after Christmas which could change everything. Insiders seem to think a 1st will happen but realistically Montreal is taking whatever the best return is.
So either Chiarot will kind of set the market for rental defencemen if he goes early in the new year or if he goes closer to deadline the market will already be set.
Also, not sure if Montreal has set the price at a 1st or if that is strictly like Elliot friedman and Pierre Lebrun speculating. With management changes I am sure Gorton hasn’t really got far with any talks</div></div>
Yep, if he's traded before others then he will go at a time when there is demand and very little supply. That would be the best case scenario for Montreal. There are others who may come available as the calendar turns to February and March. Seattle could have a significant impact on the trade market, they loaded up with defense during the expansion draft and one has to assume Ron Francis will use that collateral soon. Mark Giordano, although carrying a much heavier cap hit, would be an extremely attractive option for any playoff bound team, and Carson Soucy represents some very good value. Vegas will need cap space before the end of the season so Brayden McNabb might hit the market and despite his extra year of term he would be a very attractive target as well. Brian Dumoulin is another who might become available, although his extra year of contract includes quite a bit more salary.
It really does surprise me to suggest that, at this point in time, scoring from the bottom six forwards appears to be a priority for Edmonton, rather than shoring up the defense. Derek Ryan started off well, but has faded offensively. Ryan McLeod has looked good at times, but he's still developing. Warren Foegele has been good most nights, but he's never been a scorer at the NHL level. Colton Sceviour has shown flashes, but hasn't been rewarded much for his efforts. Tyler Benson was an offensive dynamo throughout his minor hockey career and in Bakersfield, but his weak skating and his deployment on the 4th line have limited his contributions at the NHL level. Brendan Perlini completely disappeared once the regular season began, and Devin SHore has been injured and is not likely to add much scoring punch when he returns. Maybe Dylan Holloway will add some depth scoring, but it is risky to depend on a raw rookie for that purpose.
Despite the rash of injuries to Edmonton's blue line, I think Edmonton should be looking for a bottom six forward who can drive some offense without giving up too much defensively. Because the bottom six have been crushed at 5v5, that kind of acquisition should be of more importance than adding a defenseman.

Terrible offer. Legare is a below average prospect. He's barely hacking it at the AHL level.

Flames need to send Money back preferably not Lucic maybe when Valimaki has confidence again he can take Zadorov's place and he can be the money going back? Doubt that happens because Suttef loves Zadorov type defensemen

I think kulak is a given to be moved also. Perreault too.
Chiarot is the only guy that can potentially return a LATE 1st, if they're lucky with a desperate team.
No team is trading down from a 1st for Lehkonen. A 3rd at best.

Thoughts on values of players
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs696969</b></div><div>You sound like a guy who has not watched him play. Every GM who saw how he played in the playoffs last year and how effective he was would give up a late first for him</div></div>
I think there's a chance he returns a 1st, but I'd also say that the LD market at the deadline has the potential to be pretty swamped when it comes to solid, effective pending UFA's. There's probably 8-10 guys out there who reasonably similar, who could all end up on the block when their teams inevitably fall out of it. Someone had a list up the other day on a "Chia" thread, and I can't remember all of them (Lindholm/Gio stick out), but it could be a pretty watered down LD market.

THEY ACTUALLY NEED GUHLE IN THE NHL (on opening night after the Monday 5pm deadline) FOR CAP REASONS! Guhle's higher salary and bonuses will maximize and lock in the LTIR cushion so they can make further late season moves like signing college draft picks such as Jordan Harris. Hello Tampa bay2.0

Suzuki goes the Tavares MacKinnon route out of entry level
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canadianfan543</b></div><div>Yes this is my favourite thing to happen. Every person who says Nate or pasta took pay cuts need to realize they took market value based on their play at the time. Unfortunate for both of them that they took off but that’s what happens in this business</div></div>
yup. Nate signed the same market contract as Monahan, Gaudreau, & Scheifele. All those deals got done within a few days of one another. Mack just went from a good player with untapped potential to a top 3 player in the league after he signed it. He didnt give the Avs a discount. Neither did Tavares when he signed his deal.
Suzuki has Norris, Dach, and Hughes as probably his coming off ELC market comps in the RFA class. They will set their own market off one another. Happens every year

Agree. I don't expect them to be big players in the UFA market anyway, but they sure could be if they wanted to. They could throw a lot of money on the table and have a ton of roster spots to fill.

You know if they did this. They’d improve a lot. They’re already super deep on prospects and could take the 4 1st round draft pick hit. Those picks certainly wouldn’t be great as a move like this and the overall direction of the team is trending upwards. Unfortunately the owner is cheap and wouldn’t do so.

He's a bad skater, isn't very physical, doesn't have playmaking ability, and lacks defensive awareness. He just kinda shoots the puck when he gets it which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but he's generally struggled to get actual dangerous shots.
