Description
Honestly, don't need Thompson long-term since JBD is ahead of him on the depth chart and Brannstrom has really improved this year defensively. Add him to the package to get rid of Joseph and bring in a better 3RW and what is likely to be a late 2nd rounder.

Tkachuk, Norris, Batheron was elite in 2021-22, let's hope they can reignite that when together again on a top line. 2nd line is deadly as well, but if Norris doesn't light it up, Stutzle can step in and hold down that top line.

Pinto gets a bridge contract. Sanderson gets the money from buyouts and Murray's cap hit next year. Hoping the cap raise and that will be enough long term for these two key pieces.

Figured Kelly is the type of player Tampa tends to like, but he may not be good enough to crack their roster. Tampa is a place holder for anyone to take that contract, but shipping him out to get under the cap.

Wanted to resign Brassard over Watson, but figured having someone who was willing to hit people who are mean to us was needed (other than Tkachuk, of course).

Really up against the cap, so input is welcome. I am bored at work, so let me have it.

For the Sens sake, I don't think they should pay DeBrincat so much. Just because the Sens paid a lot to acquire him, shouldn't make him "so valuable". To commit to 8.5m X 8 seems excessive to me, just better ways to spend the cap, even if means DeBrincat is a UFA in summer of 2024.
I really like the direction of the Sens...along with Sabres and Wings. Gonna be a force in the East in the last half of this decade....but only if spending the cap wisely.

I don't hate packaging Lassi and Joseph together but, I doubt ARI is unlikely to give up draft picks at this point in their rebuild. Maybe a team like Seattle with a guy like Tolvanin or Geekie with a pick coming back.

I also don't think Kleven will make the team next year to start and he might come up if there are injuries. He's fresh out of the NCAA and should be given some time to develop and play loads of mins in the AHL before being a bottom-pair D.

I would not break up Timmy and Brady at any point! I would maybe even slide Norris in on the RW on that line to see if that works. Give Norris an easier time than playing Centre and see if that can help him stay healthy.

I like your D lines a lot. I know our farm team is cramped with LD as well (Donovan, Hamara) so I was trying to alleviate a bit of that bottleneck by keeping Kleven up, but I agree it makes more sense to bring in JBD and let Kleven marinate a bit in the AHL.

I do like the idea of putting Norris on RW. It gives more depth on our weaker side, plus keeps Giroux and Grieg together. Great plan there. Your trade does make sense to me as well; should honestly just delete this team and remake it with your suggestions instead lol.

Yeah, the goalie tandem is the largest weak spot on this roster by a country mile! I think the main issue this year has been health though; Forsberg has been solid when healthy (especially in the bubble season) and Sogaard has been serviceable as well. If things go well for Ottawa and everyone stays relatively healthy I think they would be alright for a legitimate playoff shot.

Keep in mind though, the reason why the Senators are cap strapped is because they're locking up their core for the future, now. Tkachuk, Norris, Stutzle, and Chabot are taking hefty chunks of the cap today, but in three years the cap will be dramatically different than it is now and those contracts will be just fine and have 3-5 more years to go. So a bit tight now, but down the stretch they'll be fine.

Besides, with goaltending being so hard to pin down it can sometimes be a surprise even when you have a good tandem on paper (VAN to start the year, PHI with Hart, FLA, CGY) or when you have a seemingly bad one (TOR, CAR in 2018-19, VGK). Heck, even both (EDM, SEA, STL).

Totally fair. I think part of the reason why he's getting such high contracts is name recognition which could absolutely come back to bite them. However, he is playing at a rate similar to Patrick Laine, who signed for 8.7x4. Laine has a bit more of a reputation as an elite goal scorer, but Cat is very close to him in terms of points and on-ice impact. I figured that would be a good cap comparable, but took a bit off since Laine is also overpaid for what he contributes.

Yep. We'll be right up against next year unless one of Norris, DeBrincat or Chabot get shipped. But 24-25 is supposed to see a larger cap jump.

Also I firmly believe that Ostapchuk will leapfrog Sokolov, Jarventie, Crookshank and everyone else in Belleville. With his speed, size and defensive abilities he might even give Greig a run for his money.
