During Draft day amp after
From a Buffalo POV, that deal is an emphatic 'yes' and I imagine the Sabres would even add a medium prospect or depth player - but the questions are: 1) do the Hawks want to trade Murphy rather than keep him as mentor for their youth?; and, to a lesser degree, 2) does Murphy have Buffalo on his M-NTC list? If so, if the Hawks came to him with the intent to move him, I'd assume that his history with Granato would favor Murphy agreeing to a Buffalo trade.

I wouldnt hold my breath on that ask. Just keep him in that case.

Connor Murphy is a fine RhD, which is just what Buffalo needs (probably to partner Owen Power), and is signed for three more seasons at a very favorable cap hit. That being said, if Buffalo trades a first for him, it shouldn't be the 2023 pick -- that is virtually guaranteed to be no later than 13th overall and there's a small chance it might drop to 12th. Murphy plus something for the 2024 first, or Rosen and the Buffalo (not Philly) 2023 second, makes sense for the Sabres. And given what the Black Hawks accepted for McCabe and Lafferty, they might not get (or want) another high 2023 pick at all.

Nice. Have to think the 2023 1st is not in play (except in a very favorable circumstance for Buffalo.)
I can see KAGM moving the 2024 1st for Murphy as a base. Figure out the rest to balance it out

Basically this. Murphy and the NYR 2nd (or Hawks 3rd if that NYR pick converts to '24 1st) for Isak Rosen, Philly 2nd, and Jacob Bryson is fair for both sides. Murphy gives you a top 4 vet to pair with the several kids you already have. Rosen gives the Hawks a 1st round equivalent to add to a pretty weak forward prospect pool with the Sabres dealing from a position of stretgth (having a number of forward prospects further along in the development curve and already having positive impact at the NHL level). Bryson has no role if you add Murphy and fills a roster sole for the Hawks while shifting some cap too. Flipping from low 2nd to high second is the plus to the 1st that is Rosen.
At the end of the day, if you think Murphy is a top 4 and a good fit to pair and help your talented young D...a first plus a little is more than fair. If you don't, Hawks hang on to him or find a different dance partner (again even if they have to retain).

If Chicago is interested in Rosen, that would be good, since it looks like Rosen is solid prospect, but Sabres will be very soon running out of ice time availabe for him on the wings.

Gotta think the Sabres can do better than Murphy, especially if it means trading down from the top 15.

Offseason with Bedard
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ReginaSask</b></div><div>If I’m unaware of the readiness of these defenceman I’ll plead ignorance but almost always a defenceman takes a while to break into the league. Korchinski, Allan, and Del Mastro don’t seem to be near NHL ready yet. That’s why I went with adding a guy like Graves who could play a couple years of that deal before being traded for more futures. Chicago went with some prospects in the college system and those kids take time to develop.
The only player I dealt here that I’d have second thoughts on is Ian Mitchell, who looks like he’s ready to see more NHL ice time. I can tell you Joey Anderson is an AHLer. The Leafs are my team and he’s not going to be a piece of the Hawks rebuild. Hillis was a Habs prospect but they seemed content to move on from him and I didn’t think of him as a major or even minor asset. I’d also think of Philips in a similar sense, so sending him to Philly for a player that can be flipped for better futures in picks seems like a smart move. The Devils trade is more about the picks. Blackwood is a player I’m sure they are ready to move on from. Smith is just filler and not making or breaking the trade. You are right to ask for more of Edmonton and I’m sure they could pay more.</div></div>
The second sentence is inaccurate. Korchinski was almost brought up this season because he is very ready and way outplaying the competition in the Juniors. He's probably the best or top 2 defensive prospects in the juniors and college. Kaiser is a shoe-in to sign a pro contract this season and may be brought up as soon as the NCAA season is completed but definitely next year. Del Mastro and Allan both may or may not be brought up next year, but if not next year than certainly the following. However, you are forgetting some guys in the AHL who've been developing nicely. Vlasic, Roos, Phillips, Regula, Mitchell all whom have had tastes of the NHL this year and will get more opportunity next year. This is also without considering Galvas who's looked good in Rockford and Caleb Jones who may be resigned why others are developing. Point is, there is a massive logjam of good to very good prospects, and they need to flush through them to determine who's a part of the future all while the point of tanking is allowing these kids to develop and assess them in the pros without concern for the wins versus losses record. The Athletic just published an article about the kids in the NCAA and juniors and said Kaiser and Korchinski are basically a lock ((this article didn't even include the aforementioned names in the AHL...Vlasic (who's a lock), Phillips (who's already in the NHL), Roos, Regula and Mitchell)). You don't bring in vets to block slots; again this team is not competing for anything next year and with Seth Jones and murphy they have their vets to help the young guys transition.
Up front, you have the Hawks trading assets for older players...totally unnecessary. Prospects and draft picks are extremely important to a team rebuilding. Maybe they look at one trade for a vet to flip, but as they did this past offseason, you acquire guys in free agency you can retain on and flip at the TDL not give up picks and prospects. Throwing in the towel on Mitchell and Phillips for a chance to acquire a vet that the Hawks have a chance to retain and potentially flip is just not a great strategy.

Offseason with Bedard
A lot to unpack here.
Edmonton: Why would we trade Dickson for a cap dump in Foegele and Niemelainen who's really a AHL player and a position where we are deep with prospects at?
Vancouver: Myers is a massive cap dump and we are giving up prospects for that? Myers alone will cost Vancouver a 3rd just to move his cap hit, so in your scenario you're giving away players for free.
Minnesota doesn't touch that
Philly: Philips is a good prospect and hawks are rebuilding. There is a zero reason for Philly to move Atkinson and a 3rd for Philips and there is a zero reason for the Hawks to acquire Atkinson unless they can retain half and flip him for more than Philips is worth which about a 2nd rounder.
NJD won't give up that much
Bluegar is not very good. Foligno has no business on a rebuilding team. Ryan Graves for a rebuilding team? Why?
You are missing all the Blackhawks prospects from this list. The intent of the rebuild is also bringing up prospects and getting them used to playing in the NHL without the Hawks caring about wins and losses. Maybe you aren't familiar with all the prospects, but Hawks have a lot of them and a handful will surely be brought up next season instead of plugging in guys like Graves, Myers, Bluegar, and Foligno. Maybe they bring in a couple vets to flip at the TDL, but they are more than likely to do that in positions that don't take away from prospects.

Rest of the season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMtommyhawk</b></div><div>I thought for sure Phillips and Mitchell being paired up was going to be the plan when they were both up, but that never really came to fruition. (Moneypuck says they played a total of 11.5 minutes together) I like what Murphy brings for the younger guys in experience and mentorship, but you’re right, those top 4 minutes are essential to developing the young guys. Davidson seems willing to retain on longer contracts, so I wouldn’t mind seeing what you can get for Murphy at 50% retained. All we can hope for is that Mitchell’s ice time jumps on this final stretch.</div></div>
I like Murphy too, but he is just a roadblock right now. I don't think his experience is going to make or break the development of any young defensemen in CHI's system. Even if the plan is to move on from some of the more NHL ready Bowman era prospects, we should still be trying to get them more ice time to see if we can maximize their trade values.

Mitchell is gonna go somewhere else and be a solid defenseman. It's pretty sad the way CHI has utilized him. I really think CHI should trade Murphy and either scratch Zaitsev or buy out his contract. Give the two spots on the right side behind Jones to Mitchell and Regula, let them acclimate and get serious minutes and be put in a position to succeed before they torch their value and CHI tosses them out for nothing. Also, why haven't Phillips and Mitchell been playing as a pair? Shelter or them if you have to, but their chemistry last year in Rockford was undeniable.

I'm a Hawks fan, but those returns are unrealistic.
Athanasiou possibly gets a 4th.
Probably a lesser prospect from Boston in return for Kane. Bruins probably don't want Kane anyway.
Blackwell gets a 1st along with a cap dump? Not likely.
Katchouk probably worth a 4th.
LA may have to pay a 1st to move Petersen, but McCabe straight up for Byfield ain't happening.
Ottawa probably can unload Zaitsev for less.

Whether one agrees with some, all, or none of them, your thoughts are provocative. I wonder if Jake McCabe is some sort of solution to our LhD/partner-for-Matt-Roy problem.

Wrong. What people don't understand about the Cat situation is he was unwilling to sign an extension and that is exemplified by him not signing an extension in Ottawa right now. A rebuilding team doesn't want to end up in arbitration or signing a short-term deal sending a player to UFA status obviously as they are thinking 4 to 5 years out. Further, not many teams want to take on that risk for a big price tag in draft capital and prospects.
Kane is hands down better then Cat, Chicago easily declines this offer as other teams will offer more.

Predictions- Chicago Blackhawks
Agreed. I’m honestly excited how they will play after the Toews, Kane, Domi and Athanasiou trades happen.
Kane: 1-2 firsts. A prospect and a solid roster player. Expect 50% RS and who knows, maybe they can get an additional 3rd or 2nd round pick.
Toews: 1-2 seconds. A prospect and expect 50% RS and who knows, maybe they can get an additional 3rd round pick because Toews can still play and has a tone of experience.
Domi and Athanasiou: 3rd round picks
