Get what your saying here. I really don’t think Van is a non playoff team. As for waiving, only he knows that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PittsburghBob69</b></div><div>The leafs offered Dermott 895k. If someone offers him 1.395M or above the leafs will let him walk and take the 3rd round pick compensation. NO way they pay him 2M. Obviously he didn’t sign the 895k offer sheet yet but he’s not gonna get more than 1M/year from Toronto. And he’s not arbitration eligible.
And Mikheyev is arbitration eligible and has a hearing next week I believe. He will probably win something like 1.5-2M a year</div></div>
I agree but I was basing Dermotts salary on what the Leafs paid Holl. In my opinion he looks at that contract and says I’m worth the same. Does Deott deserve 2 mil a year... probably not but I am thinking that’s the snag...

Open night lineup whenever that happens
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oilsince95</b></div><div>Yeah I think they will allow teams to carry more players, but force a need to declare their max 23 man roster (under the cap). Of course teams can choose to carry just 22 or 21 at a time if they so choose. If anyone is on a 1 way and stays in the taxi group beyond that, they need to be waived as per usual as if they were going to the minors. If nobody claims them, then they can be in the taxi squad and ready at a moment's notice for a call up. But the 23 max man squad should always be cap compliant to 81.5 mil.
Only fair that 1 ways staying over the cap in the taxi can be claimed. Otherwise we have a mini version of the issue that led to the cap in the first place. No way ownership agrees on that. Good luck arguing it to Ottawa, Buffalo etc.</div></div>
With so much uncertainty I would think the nhl does not want players to be moving so much from team to team. Especially with the Canada/Us border situation and 14 day quarantine. So even if a team pulled a guy off waivers he wouldn’t play for 14 days.

Even if it’s a taxi squad there will be no clearing waivers. You will have to be cap compliant for the game but you will be able to carry an expanded roster that will have to be higher then the cap to make it worth.
Taxi squad was the “term” I was looking for this morning.

Well from this read you are correct. I’m not gonna lie I did not see that coming.
Problem is the goals and advanced stats look great on paper in the regular season.
But 3 years in a row he no showed in the playoffs when it counts.... there is no heart there and laziness. You don’t need advanced stats to tell you that...
But yes thanks for the link

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensibleguy</b></div><div>Ottawa isn't paying Gaborik's salary, insurance is. All they get is the cap, which they need to reach the cap floor. It's free cap. If they trade it, they need to acquire more cap, and if it isn't insured, they need to pay salary for that newly acquired cap. This cap is free.
Johnsson's contract has high signing bonuses, and those need to be paid in balloon payments, which is fine for a money rich team like Toronto with great media revenue and a huge fan base buying merchandise, but Ottawa doesn't have the media cash, or revenue and those signing bonuses need to be paid out of pocket by the owner each spring. People will say, it's just X amount of money, but it's millions of dollars, millions. It's easier to pay the salaries in smaller portion throughout the season, while generating ticket revenue. Also, there's no room for Johnsson, He's going to be 26 before the season starts, and doesn't fit into the team's long term plan.</div></div>
26 years old and the season before his injury he put up 42 points
Next 3 years payable salary including bonus. (Cap hit 3.4)
3.6
2.5
2.5
On a rebuilding team how would that not fit?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>yeah, people gotta stop with that Marleau "cap space is super valuable" stuff because it was only expensive because Dubas' hands were literally tied by Marleau's full NMC and he would only waive for one team that knew he would waive for them so they werent going to give up assets for him and didnt want to pay him 6 million dollars so the leafs not only needed to pay a too big contract tax, they also had to pay the "will buy this player out and pay him for 2 years instead of 1" tax</div></div>
Your right the NMC made it more difficult but there has been other deals like this and the “experts” (I put this in quotes only because they are paid to be on tv to talk about this) have said similar things since the announcement of the flat cap.

You do realize he was actually one of the most aggressive for net front goals this year in the league right? I wouldn't do that deal for Nylander alone. Mainly due to the lack of term on Dumba and then we give them our best prospect and mikeyev who is going to be a big part of the team next year and a second. It's extremely terrible asset management.</div></div>
Can you add the link here that says Nylander was one of the most aggressive net front presence goal scorers here?
Either way I just go back to his playoff performance. Game 5 last year at the 11 minute mark in the third period is enough to prove my point that he’s a floater. Or should we just look at the last 2 bruins series?

This is the worst one yet.
Ottawa needs Gaborik's cap to reach the floor, trading it hurts them
Johnsson contract is too much, for too little production, and is structured horribly with too much in signing bonus, balloon payents
Ottawa doesn't need Andreas Johnsson, so this makes no sense on all levels</div></div>
Ottawa will be bringing in 1 year deal guys this year from other teams with picks to get them to the floor. There is lots of teams out there with guys on big expiring contracts. Look for similar deals like the Marleau trade last year. Maybe not a first but some 2nd/3rd rounders. At least that would be the smart thing to do. They’re rebuild is off to a great start especially after this years draft

Montreal wanted Allen because they knew this upcoming season will be compressed and buffalo wanted to shed a little cap and get a good vet but neither team "paid a premium"</div></div>
The rangers giving up Staal and a second for “futures” is paying a premium to recoup cap. And yes your right on the Allen deal after I looked at it again.

Maybe yes but in the flat cap era you pay a premium for cap space... just look at the Marleau deal last year.. even the Jake Allen deal to the habs... and the rangers Staal deal. Unfortunately it’s the only way. Is the roster better like this or last years?

In all honesty I don’t care if Willie puts up 90 points next year. That guy has no heart, No drive and not a care in the world. Just watch game 5 at 11:05 left in the 3rd period and tell me you wouldn’t atleast take a shot to retain Nurse. Willie walks at the end of this contract too. He will be all about the money.
