Good question
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SJSGM</b></div><div>don't think they go for playoffs in 24/25, but I think 25/26 could make sense, at least be competitive
also Grier said they're letting Barbie walk (heard he might go back to Russia)</div></div>
Sharks have too many holes in their prospect/young player pool. I'm betting Celebrini heads back to college for another year while the Sharks tank (no pun intended) again and land another top 5 pick next year. Realistically, the Sharks are at least 26/27 until they can consider a run. Maybe more competitive in 25/26 but likely still a bottom 5 or 6 team.

A clarification for draft lottery fans
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shaun80</b></div><div>So if Celbrini goes back to college next year, and if he does let's face it San Jose will finish dead last again, so if they win again next year they could still win and pick 1st the next 2 years? So basically 4 1sts in a row.</div></div>
Correct. A team is only allowed to move up to 1st twice, but SJ's natural position was first so it does not count against the 2 times allowed

I bet he was hoping for San Jose! 😁</div></div>
I'm sure he was okay with Chicago where he played juniors with the Chicago Steel as well but first choice probably is SJ because of family and where he spend a lot of time in his younger yearws

Huge Overhaul
Lillypad is not worth a 2nd rounder. Hawks don't take JT for free and only a few have the cap space so likely Leafs will need to pay to move him or retain some of his cap hit

Thanks for adding that! 😁
Who wouldn't want to play with Bedard? 😁</div></div>
Yes, his Dad is the team physician or strength coach for the Warriors. That's why Celebrini move to SF when he was young and played for the junior sharks

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>klassic</b></div><div>And with D contracts on the rise and cap on the rise, the deal probably doesn't get better/worse until the very end. And that is when you look to move him.</div></div>
Remember Seabrook? Another Stan Bowman blunder. If we have a chance to grab Marner for Jones, and flip Marner at the tdl for a couple of 1sts or a 1st and a good prospect, Hawks do it without thinking twice. No way does jones return positive assets today and down the road it won't get that much better. Hawks are rebuilding clearly, and moving a boat anchor contract for a couple of 1sts is not even remotely something to think twice about.
Think about this another way. In the last year of his contract, Jones will be 35 years old and eating up roughly 10% of the anticipated cap ceiling. Would you sign Kane next season for $8.5M for a year? Likely not, and Kane is 2 to 3 times the player Jones ever was and ever will be. Also, think about in the summer of 2025 and summer of 2026 without the Jones contract and what the Hawks can do in free agency with the extra space when quite a number of really good players become UFAs. $9.5M gets a heck of player.

All in all, if Jones asks for a trade, I would rather just move him for positive value and not swap him for another contract with no guarantee of recouping anything. We don't need Marner.</div></div>
Highly doubt Jones is tradeable for positive value. He's overpaid, there's no disputing that around the league.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>That is not true. We don't know that. Jones contract has been just fine. And with the cap going up, and being on a team with a ton of cap flexibility already, it will become even more manageable. Even if we have to pay Bedsy a max contract and give Korch and Nazar $8 to $10M we will still have a lot of space. Three to five years from now the cap will be over $100M, maybe even well over.</div></div>
I'm not looking at it in totality of the team cap spend, simply from Jones earning his $9.5M cap hit. He's not getting better at his age and he's already overpaid by $1.5M to $2.5M which is only going to get worse as father time marches on

That's a minimum. Marner could easily fetch a 1st, 2nd and prospect or 2 firsts...maybe even more

Even if Marner and Bedsy light it up next season, Hawks still don't make the playoffs. And then Marner walks and what are the Hawks left with?</div></div>
Because the Hawks retain 50% on Marner at the TDL and trade him for at least a first and a good young player or prospect. This move would make sense for Chicago

Possible view of the leafs looking into the next season
Hawks easily decline. Timmons is waiver wire material and Jarnkrok is of no use to Chicago. Crevier is a big body RHD who is getting heavy minutes in the AHL and looked like a 3rd liner in the call up this year which they will need on the RHD once Murphy is gone and Rinzel is called up in two years.
