Fair enough. Although only one of Boeser and Toffoli likely stays. And if it was me it Boeser would be on his way out. Toffoli is great. Under that circumstance you’d have Kapanen, Virtanen and Toffoli. Not a bad top 9!

That’s part of the deal. They Devils shed cap. For a team that is nowhere near competing I would assume the owners aren’t interested in spending to the cap. Net net they save $1 million in cap hit and more when you consider the bonuses already paid to Kapanen. So from the devils perspective you have less cash outflow over 3 years, get rid of a $9 million 2nd pairing defencemen and add younger players to build up the team. That was my thinking, not suggesting it makes sense though! Could be wrong

I do think there is value in the cap space. To add to the defence you will need to either trade players for picks or cheap players. Khaira +2 million cap space for Johnsson isn’t terrible value considering the flat cap. But I agree straight across Johnsson is the far better player

Since being a leaf clifford has shown himself to be entirely replacable.
Even when he was at peak during the kings cup runs he was their least used player by a wide margine, both in the regular season and playoffs and even more drastically during important games</div></div>
I look forward to the playoffs :)

Great thing about sports is the players solve these debates for us. I’ll be the first to admit that Engvall has a bigger impact than Clifford in the playoffs. No sense in arguing over it. I love Clifford as a player and he’s one of the few players on the Leafs that has won a cup.

We’ll just have to disagree on this one. I have a feeling we’ll be having a different conversation after the playoffs are over and we see why Dubas brought Clifford in.

We will see this year. All it takes is a couple big hits in a playoff game to change momentum. Leafs have never had that. Blue, Bruins, Vegas, etc. all have those guys

I’m not sure I agree. For some reason people think the leafs need offence from their 4th line. Sure if you compare stats and overall player Engvall offers more. But Clifford is the only player on the leafs that change the momentum in a playoff game with his physicality. It’s funny because fans ripped Dubas for lacking toughness. So he trades for a great locker room guy and one of the toughest in the NhL, and now we want to keep Engvall?

That makes the 2021 issue even worse. Again the term doesn’t matter because in future years that cap will increase. But in 2021 it will likely still be 81.5

Sure we can debate term, but that doesn’t really matter in 2021. My point is do you resign him to big dollars or do you build a more well rounded team with less talent in net at a cheaper cost.

I agree. This deal is dependent on the value Clifford brings in the playoffs. If Dubas looks at Clifford as the final piece to get over the hurdle and he’s a good dressing room guy I’m ok to lose the 2nd. But if he just fills a regular 4th line role I’m ok to walk away. You don’t sign him for regular season, you sign him for the playoffs. I already like the impact he’s had on Kapanen’s physicality.

There are close to 20 teams looking to dump some cap and get anything back in return. Teams with cap space are going to have lots of options out there and will not be giving up higher end draft picks for bottom half roster players. Compound that with Johnsson coming off a terrible season (only 3 even strength goals scored in over 1/2 a season while playing with talented line mates) and now coming off a serious leg injury, and you are going to hear the same thing from all 30 teams with these expectations. "Not interested".</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jamiepo</b></div><div>If 5.5m sounds like 9.5m I can’t help you. I’m just being realistic about his contract demands.</div></div>
My point wasn’t 9.5 vs. 5.5 but more so relying on one breakout season as an outlier. His average production across 2 teams is ~50 points not 70+ Which is similar to Skinner (one 40 goal season over his career and he fetches 9.5mln)
I also don’t think people understand what the flat cap means for contracts. Generally you pay a guy assuming his cap % reduces over a 5yr deal. Whatever Domi gets this year as a % of the cap is gonna be the exact same in 3yrs. Maybe I’m a little off on the $ value, but anything over 5.5mln seems heavy. Could be wrong tho!

Yes I’m reminded of the one season Domi broke out. For some reason the current season doesn’t matter to this chat. So let’s remove Domi from the equation. All I was really looking for is someone to play 3rd line Center defensively that is less expensive than Kerfoot and Johnsson combined. Couldn’t care less if Domi had 72 or 40 points. As for Andersen, I guess Bear is better than I thought. All I was looking for there is a dependable right handed dman with some contract protection.

If Domi costs more I’d just scrap the trade and move those guys for picks and sign a 3rd line Center UFA for a similar price. Shouldn’t need to pay top dollar for 40-50 consistent points
