One more move to give a little cap relief
Czarnik did just get beat by Rieder in camp, but I'm not sure if moving depth for a draft pick upgrade is the right move for a contending team. I thought Czarnik played pretty well last year and is a good offensive minded option for the bottom 6. Personally I wouldn't move him just to carry Quine on the big club all year and play Ruzicka <10 mins a night.

Flames Waiver Claim
This would give Kylington one more season of AHL development time I suppose, but he already played pretty well on the bottom pair with Andersson for half of last season. Treliving does like his D depth though, and I'd prefer this move to signed MacDonald.

Flames 2019-2020 Starting Line-Up
I don't know if I'd put Kylington and Brodie together as they are both so similar in play style, or Rinaldo over Czarnik as the guy moving in and out of the lineup. I would be interested in seeing these pairings tested out:
Gio - Brodie
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Hamonic
or just go with what worked well last season.

Calgary Flames signed Tobias Rieder (1 Year / $700,000 AAV)
A good bottom 6 option to replace some of Hathaway's PK minutes. He'll be motivated to earn another / a better deal and be surrounded by better players so I expect he won't go goalless this season. Hopefully this is another Glencross/Versteeg situation where the Oilers let go of a guy who goes on to play an important role for the Flames and he can put up 20 points.

Calgary Flames signed Zac Rinaldo (1 Year / $700,000 AAV)
Why would they sign the older, dirtier version of Lomberg? I guess they want toughness in Stockton. Here's hoping they don't put him in the lineup on the big club. I don't like this deal but I suppose they do have contract slots to spare and it's only a year.

Great signing for the Jets as they've locked up the Connor-Scheifele pairing long term for pretty good value.

Colorado Avalanche signed Mikko Rantanen (6 Years / $9,250,000 AAV)
A bit high for only a 6 year term (a little more than this AAV should have bought the full 8), but I suppose he did just have an outstanding playoffs. Also surprised it seems there's 0% from bonuses. Overall if he keeps up his pace from the last couple years and goes beast mode in the playoffs consistently the team will be happy to pay him $9.25M AAV and I think the player did well to keep the term down a bit to allow him to sign one more massive deal with term at age 28.

Winnipeg Jets signed Patrik Laine (2 Years / $6,750,000 AAV)
Laine betting on himself as he still put up 30G in a down year. If he gets back over 40G and 70P he will get much more sooner than the other guys that signed the off season. A bit surprised he didn't go for the three years with a massive QO that a lot of the other RFA's did though as that's the season expansion and the TV deal will open up a fair bit of cap space.
I still like the deal for Winnipeg as well as they have a guy who averaged around 37G and 64P per 82 signed to a very fair cap hit for the next couple years. If this is where he stays then can secure him long term for less than it would've cost this year

I had suggested a version of this as well ahead of the draft but gave Montreal a bit better of a return: <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1187433">https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1187433</a>
I like the idea of getting Drouin to give us an additional crafty puck carrier to take some pressure off Johnny. I think Drouin would breakout here without the expectations he's had in Montreal (won't have to be the go to guy). I have him playing as a RW like a poor man's Patrick Kane with Tkachuk & Backs though.

Tkachuk resigned now what
Pretty sure the point of bridging Tkachuk was to keep the group that finished 2nd overall (but did fall on their face in a playoff series) together for another shot to prove that the Avs series was just them playing their worst at the worst time and not a sign the team has far to go to be in the mix for a Cup. Pretty sure they carry 22 guys, or LTIR Valimaki and run 23 (but then they won't accrue space for any deadline deals).

Calgary Flames signed Matthew Tkachuk (3 Years / $7,000,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Danny12357</b></div><div>My thought would be that I don't think Aho money gets you 6 years if it took $7M to buy 3.
The way I would look at it the additional RFA year would have cost at least $9M or an increase in AAV of $500K, because the qualifying offer assures Tkachuk of that. If they wanted to buy UFA years, I don't see how they could be cheaper than $750K per season, but probably cost upwards of about $1M. All that considered I don't see how Tkachuk would have taken anythign that didn't start somewhere around $9M-$9.5M for a 6 year deal if it took $7M to get it done on a 3 year term.</div></div>
If you look into my linked ACGM post, I do have the fourth RFA year at $9M (Skinner) and the first UFA year at $10.5M (Kane) plus 3 RFA years at $7.5M (which is more than he's currently getting). This gets me to the 5 year $8.4M. For a 6th year assume another $10.5M (Kane) which brings it to $8.75M AAV. Therefore, I don't think Tkachuk would get over $9M AAV on a six year deal from Treliving.
Now that his current contract is essentially equivalent to a 4 x $7.5M (assuming he just signs his $9M QO to go UFA), and applying the same $10.5M - $11.5M (Kane - Panarin) to UFA years, the 5 year AAV should be $8.1M - $8.3M and the 6 year AAV would be $8.5 - $$8.833M. These are very player friendly as I don't think Tkachuk is as good as Kane & Panarin, which is why I thought they may be able to drive down the AAV a bit to the neighborhood of 6 x $8.333M, which they could have fit by moving Czarnik.
Regardless, I'm happy they have him to a good value in their Johnny + Gio window, and in 3 years time they have a decent amount of flexibility to choose a direction to go in and hopefully keep the group together if they've had some team success.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TartarSauce90</b></div><div>Interesting fact : Highest paid Calgary Flames player of all time!</div></div>
I can't believe Ryan Leslie forgot one of the most famous Flames; Iginla also made a $7M AAV from 2005 - 2012.
I think the deal is fair for both the player and the team. Their window to win is the next three years, and they have Tkachuk at a good % of cap number for that time, but now risk losing Johnny and Tkachuk in consecutive off seasons. I would have preferred paying for the 5-6 year term at around what Aho's making by simply moving out Czarnik though: <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1431655">https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1431655</a>

What I meant in that post is trade Edmundson for futures or minimal cap space back instead of getting Faulk, and re-sign Pietrangelo using the budget of Pietrangelo + Edmundson (9.6M), but evidently the wording was unclear so I've edited that post.

(CAR/STL) - Faulk & 2020 5th for Edmundson, Bokk & 2021 7th
This deal is pretty great for Carolina They move a guy they have no room for / who wanted out for a developing 1st rounder, and a middle pairing defensive defense man who they can probably flip for additional assets. These types of guys usually have amazing value near the deadline and they likely wouldn't even need to keep him for the playoffs given their glut of defensive prospects.

St. Louis Blues signed Justin Faulk (7 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
1-2 years too long and 0.5-1M AAV too much but that seems to be the case with these UFA deals. This is more of a replacement for Parayko on the second pair, who will move up when the Blues (likely now) let Pietrangelo test free agency. If I'm the Blues I would have rather looked to keep Pietrangelo around by simply moving Edmundson for futures (or letting him go as a UFA) and offering the 9.6M in budgeted cap space that the same two players used this season plus some of the cap inflation to get Pietrangelo under contract long term.

Calgary Flames signed Jakob Pelletier (3 Years / $863,333 AAV)
Based on development camp he seems like he is one of the most determined prospects out on the ice. Constantly hounds the puck and already has the smarts to play a good two-way game. This deal is his reward (signing bonus money) for a good camp. Hopefully he goes down to light up Jr, work out to add strength, and gets some consideration for the WJC this December.

Tampa Bay Lightning signed Brayden Point (3 Years / $6,750,000 AAV)
Great bridge deal for Tampa as it helps them keep one of their best players at a relatively low AAV through the cap crunch they face in the next couple years. My guess is the new TV deal and expansion gives a big boost to the cap towards the end of this deal and then they open up the vault to keep him around long term.
I'm thinking this also helps the other teams sign their RFA holdouts as it sets the cap on their three year bridge in this ball park of $6.75M. I feel like the 5 year cap was set by Aho's $8.454M, and the longer term deal's ceiling is Marner's $10.9M (which was probably a million and a half too much).

What would Hamonic cost
You think the Flames would take a third for him? :tearsofjoy
I think they would target Roslovic or Vesalainen in order to turn a #3/4D into a developing middle 6 forward. Obviously a package like that would be dependent on an extension being in place, and they could include a mid pick to account for the age differences.
Hamonic (team friendly extension to age 34/35 in place) + 2020 3rd = Vesalainen/Roslovic?
I could see them going as high as a 2nd with the pick, but they did give up a lot to get Hamonic, so I expect they may value him more than some other teams in the league.

New York Rangers signed Anthony Deangelo (1 Year / $925,000 AAV)
Great deal as the Rangers get a middle pairing defender for well under market value this year. I expect there is already another nice contract for him in place with the Rangers that will be announced in the New Year, otherwise he should have looked for and signed an offer sheet. I kept expecting Anaheim would have offered him much more than 925k to play for them next season.

another line build
After last night (Dube clicked with Johnny & Mony), I like these lines and am in the camp that we could bump Ryan to RW as he's one of the few RHS's we have (but he's obviously still going to be taking draws). If Lucic bounces back to about a 35 point pace (his average with the Oil over three seasons) I could even see Peters trying out a 3M v2.0 (Lucic - Backlund - Frolik) as the checking line.
The only think I don't like is walking Tkachuk straight to UFA :-/

Ottawa Senators signed Thomas Chabot (8 Years / $8,000,000 AAV)
Similar approach to when they signed Karlsson coming out of his ELC (7 years at about 10% of the cap). They have a good young defender locked up for perhaps a bit of an overpay now when the team is trash and it doesn't matter. With cap inflation and continued progression by the player, this will be a nice bargain contract for their #1D. What's most interesting to me is the player committing to the organization for 8 years after the tire fire the last couple of seasons have been.

Different take on a Flames Jets trade
Flames might try to send a lower pick if Hamonic re-ups with the Jets given what they already had to give up to get him, but Vesalainen could be that additional top 6 winger the team needs to take the next step. I think the Flames would try to slot him on the top line and give them minimal defensive responsibilities. I like this trade idea!

Jets in trouble Huge trade
It's a reasonable offer of two late firsts, a prospect maybe worth a third and two pending UFA's (perhaps worth a second each near the deadline), but I doubt they'd send a franchise player out in a quantity for quality type deal.
I'm guessing that condition means that if Laine signs prior to October, it's a first, else it's a second correct?

Ehlers & Copp are good targets to chase, but this defence is now one top 4 injury away from being bad... Plus there's really nothing long term going the other way to entice the Jets to move out two guys that have years of team control left.
