(TOR/LAK) - Moore, 2020 3rd round pick, Conditionial 2021 3rd round pick for Campbell, Clifford
A win for LA getting two picks (with one potentially upgrading to a 2nd) for their backup and a pending UFA fourth liner

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Justin Holl (3 Years / $2,000,000 AAV)
Weird to see a potentially #4/5D get a M-NTC. Leafs brass must really like the guy. Overall a good deal if his recent play continues and he can stay slotted in on the second pair. Even on the bottom pair a $2M cap hit isn't bad (unless you already spend $40M on four players and need to find savings elsewhere).

Montreal Canadiens signed Ilya Kovalchuk (1 Year / $700,000 AAV)
I can't believe nobody else wanted him at this price. Unless he thought Montreal was the best shot at a cup? Anyway, he's looking to be a great addition for the Habs.

Great deal for the Canes. Even if he's rusty from the few months off they're paying him fourth liner money (pending results of the playoffs).

Calgary Flames signed Rasmus Andersson (6 Years / $4,550,000 AAV)
Treliving betting on Andersson continuing to get better, borrowing from the strategy that's served Nashville well on their RFA defenders (Josi, Ellis). I like Andersson's progress so far. A good puck mover, has a pretty hard shot, and has a bit of bite to his game. I hope they play him a bit more with Hanifin this year to see if there's a fit there as the future top pairing for when Hamonic (likely) walks.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Martin Marincin (1 Year / $700,000 AAV)
6'5" #7 defender for league min with the added benefit being this guy can probably clear waivers and mentor the young players in the AHL if need be. Also if he's up being designated popcorn muncher that ain't bad either as he's done developing.

Washington Capitals signed Nicklas Bäckström (5 Years / $9,200,000 AAV)
Washington pretty much had to keep him to avoid taking a step back and keeping their window to win open for a few more years. It's a touch high and they may not like the last couple years of the deal much, but considering the price for some other top line UFA's over the past year it's not a terrible contract. His style of play should hold up relatively well with age as well given he's a smart two-way playmaker who never has really relied on blazing speed.

Edmonton Oilers signed Caleb Jones (2 Years / $850,000 AAV)
Young bottom pairing defender for cheap. Good upside on this deal as well as he seems to be steadily improving at least at the AHL level.

(BUF/CGY) - 2020 4th round pick (SJS) for Frolík
Frolik was a good player for the Flames but is simply starting to slow down and it now seems like he can be replaced in the bottom six for way cheaper. Good asset management by Treliving even if he doesn't do anything with the space other than bring back Czarnik from the AHL, but I expect it also means the Flames will be buying at the the deadline if the prices are fair.

If these trades had actually happened
Swap Pelletier for the 2020 pick in that Frolik trade.
It's too bad these fell through as I think it would have made the team much more dangerous offensively and more difficult to play against. Though the Valimaki injury would have made our D depth pretty thin without Brodie, so I'm not as bummed out about that one not happening. It is also interesting to see that a pair of players that were essentially traded in Frolik and Jankowski have been playing poorly to start the year so obviously knowing their team was ready to move them effects a player's psyche.

(STL/DET) - Fabbri for De La Rose
More upside here for Detroit if Fabbri can stay healthy. He'll also probably get more opportunities offensively (while his defensive warts get overlooked) on a rebuilding team. I'm also not surprised St. Louis went with a fourth liner / press box guy over a pick as they look to defend their cup and having additional NHL ready depth never hurts. I think Detroit has the potential to win big with this trade if Fabbri bounces back to his previous development curve, but right now it looks pretty fair and I don't hate it from a Blues perspective either.

Nashville Predators signed Austin Watson (3 Years / $1,500,000 AAV)
Contract is fair for what he brings on the ice. There must be something going on behind the scenes that fans don't see regarding his rehab as a person for Nashville to keep him around for three more years, but I for one would have a hard time sharing a locker room with a guy who beats women so I wonder what his teammates think of his new deal.

(TBL/NJD) - Domingue for 2021 conditional 7th round pick
His awful performance at the AHL level this season means the Lightning essentially had to give him away. He was a decent backup in Tampa and for periods in Arizona behind some bad teams so it's a low risk move for Jersey to see if he can't bounce back in their system.

Nashville Predators signed Roman Josi (8 Years / $9,059,000 AAV)
Predators have off season concern #1 checked off their list early in the season which is good for the team (cost certainty and ability to plan) and the player (no worries about injuries affecting his pay day). I think the Preds will be happy with at least the first half of the deal (cheaper than Karlsson & Doughty), but they are also likely counting on him remaining a top defender into his mid 30's as I don't think cap inflation will allow teams to pay $9M to a mid pairing defender & PP QB, which he is bound to regress to at some point during this contract. I feel that Nashville's window is within the next few years, so I think keeping their top defender from going to UFA makes this a fair signing.

No more GM extensions
These trades make no sense for the Flames. They've had a middling October, but always seem to start slow. I can't see Treliving gutting the team unless the mediocrity extends all the way to the New Year.

(CHI/DET) - Perlini for Regula
A current third/fourth liner whose window to move up is closing for a projected bottom pairing defender with size (with maybe #4D upside if this years PPG over 10 games is an awakening of an offensive game). I think its fair. Detroit gets a forward they can play more minutes to see if he lives up to his first round billing in a new environment. Chicago gets a big defensive defender who they hope can be a contributor in the future when they'll need cheap ELC players.

(ANA/PIT) - Martinsen for Gudbranson
Both teams get what they needed. Anaheim has a RHD (albeit a pretty bad one), but had the cap space to overpay a bottom pairing defender that will drop the mitts. Penguins get $4M in cap space off the books and get a big body for their AHL team.

Line juggling
Agree. It's time to split them up to balance scoring (especially in road games). I personally want them to try Lindholm at C with Tkachuk.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Bennett
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Czarnik
Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik
Lucic - Ryan - Mangiapane

How Id Like the Lines
I like the idea of Bennett with the top line and pairing Tkachuk & Lindholm.
Personally, I would prefer Kylington and Jankowski in the lineup somehow (though Jankowski has played poorly so far this season so perhaps a few games in the press box would benefit him and the team). My third line would be: Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik (a new 3M line, and the LW that's with those guys has always seemed to fair well).
I also prefer Brodie with Giordano and the Swedes as the bottom pairing. In my mind if Andersson needs more ice time, they could move Hamonic down to mentor Kylington and be the stay at home guy that lets him wheel the puck up the ice more often.

Good god this is an awful return for the Flames. Gaudreau is a top 10 LW (probably even top 5). You don't trade elite offensive players on great contracts for a collection of 2nd/3rd line players and a lottery ticket with maybe a 20% chance of being an NHL'er

Test these lines
I'm surprised Peters has refused to try him at C (even during preseason).
IMO, it's Bennett's stalled development that has prevented the team from becoming better. He has characteristics that should make him successful on the top line. He plays a bit like Ferland did as a heavy forechecker and can be a second faceoff guy with a defensive presence like Lindholm currently is (albeit he's missing the strong shot that these guys both have). If he could step his game up, it would allow them to bump Lindholm down to line two even as the RW and it would help balance the top 6 a lot:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Bennett (similar offensively inclined usage as currently)
Tkachuk - Backlund - Lindholm (tough matchups)
Lucic - Ryan - Frolik (checking/low event line)
Mangiapane - Jankowski - Czarnik (speedy but small wingers with a larger center)

Anaheim Ducks signed Luca Sbisa (1 Year / $750,000 AAV)
Good price for a bottom pairing / #7D with over 500 NHL games on his resume. He'll get into more games this season than last year probably as Winnipeg is desperate for experienced defensemen.

Boyle adds bottom 6 depth and playoff experience to a team that badly needs it. They get a good guy on a great deal at <$1M.
