Minnesota Wild signed Marcus Foligno (4 Years / $4,000,000 AAV)
Yes, 4m for four years is risky.
However, I think Foligno brings a lot more to the table than just grit. He is a leader and motivator and well respected in the locker room.
With Rossi moving up the depth chart Foligno might end up playing with Ek again. The GREEF line was one of the best defensive lines in the NHL the year before last year. Greenway can easily be replaced by someone else.
Foligno was injured for most of last year and seems fit in training camp. In the worst case he will end up in LTIR towards the end of the contract.
With the salary cap increasing and the penalties coming off the books the overall risk is not as big as people are saying. The Wild will have plenty of prospects on ELC or bridge deals meaning that spending 4m in a role player with grit and offensive upside is affordable.
In a time in which raw skill is as high as it is now in the league players that not only bring physicality will be valued. Just consider how much Tampa gave up for Jaenott.

Signing a 33 y.o. injury prone grinder still under contract for a full season to a 4x$4M contract is dumb.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Makes sense to give a 33 year old coming off a rough year a 4 year deal. Guerin with some questionable decisions.

Zuccarello's deal made sense but this is too much AAV (and maybe too much term)

Minnesota Wild signed Mats Zuccarello (2 Years / $4,125,000 AAV)
He will be 37 when the contract kicks in.
It is difficult to come up with comparable contracts, because there aren't that many forwards who sign at that age. There are quite a few forwards who sign contracts somewhere around age 34-35, but it seems like there is a huge difference in risk between a 34 year old and a 37 year old with how likely it would be that a player might decline between the ages of 34-38.
It is similar to what Pavelski got if you combine his previous two 1 year contracts and average out the AAV.
I think it is more likely that the Wild might regret the second year on this contract, but at the same time there is the human element. Zuccarello is a veteran player who over the last few years has played above his cap hit. If he is important to their room, I can see how they might have been motivated to get it done and avoid the implications of booting out a well-liked core veteran.
I don't think he should have gotten 2 years in this scenario, but I can see why they might have done it. Year-to-year is always better for veterans at that age, where they can fall off a cliff at any moment. If he were a few years younger, 2-3 years would be fine.

I don't like the timing of this signing at all.
MIN has cap problems and Zucc just turned 36 y.o....
If I'm the GM, I wait until July 1st to be reassured about his decline and see if you can find better/younger on the market.
Zucc wouldn't be in high demand and would probably be interested to stay in Minnesota anyway.

Good on MIN for this extension. Zuc and Kap are an amazing duo. Zuc is deserving of this extension even though he is 35 and this takes him till he's 38 but I still see him making an impact in the NHL at that age. Best Norwegian NHL player born

Dumba is still a good top 4D and even if he sucks, it's a 1 year deal so there's no real risk here

It's one-year. It can't be "awful." Just bad. And they don't need him to put up points. Just be a reliable veteran presence for those young guys, and it will be a positive even if he only scores ten points.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wilson_W_Wilson_Jr</b></div><div>Is Arizona trying to contend?</div></div>
More like pretend, but it's a step in the right direction. Obvious hole in the lineup for a veteran defenseman. Arguably still a hole, but it looks a lot less shaky with Dumba, and when they fall short, the can take inventory at the deadline and see if there are deals to be made.
Spending money on quality veteran free agents without anchoring to term, and keeping all the draft capital banked away is a good compromise towards continuing the rebuild and trying to be more competitive for the players' and team's sake.

What leverage did Dumba have that he got 3,9M? At this moment, my best offer being Arizona is 2M. He pretty much had nowhere else to go, maybe except Anaheim. No other teams had free roster spots or money to sign him.

(PIT/MTL/SJS) - Granlund, Rutta, Petry, DeSmith, Légaré, 2024 1st (PIT), 2025 2nd (PIT) for Pitlick, Hoffman for Karlsson, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd (SJS)
I cannot understand this trade for the life of me. I get Pittsburgh wants to compete with their window rapidly closing, but this is going to get bad quick. The money San Jose retained on EK65 is the same amount that Pittsburgh retained on Petry, so thats a wash. The Pens really didnt have to give up a whole bunch, but I just cant see EK65 repeating his 22 / 23 season. Pittsburgh obviously wins in the now, but that contract is going to SUCK in a year or two.
Don't get me wrong, I am excited to watch Karlsson with Crosby, Malkin, and Letang based on nostalgia alone, but I dont think this was good for either team. Especially San Jose lol. Somehow the Habs came out really well here, not sure how Hughes managed to pull that one off
