Totally fair, I guess I figured he would get a vegas style extension (solid number like 6.5 with term) and that they could fit both of them in with the expiring deals and the cap rising. Hard to project that though

Of the top of my head, I can't think of a team that is desparate/or have the cap to add one. His best value might be around TDL, when contending team are looking for a good , expiring contract Dmen for a playoff push</div></div>
I admittedly dont think he holds a lot of value either but I think a team will be willing to buy him this offseason given the upside vs cost to acquire should be pretty fair. Theres probably a handful of teams who could slot him at 2LD without much thought espceially if the sens take half his salary this season

They need to bring in TOP 6 talent so that guys like Armia slot in better to where they belong on the depth chart.</div></div>

Unfortunately Habs only have one retention spot for next season
I don't think they would use it in an Armia offseason trade since the return would be meh.
They probably hold on to it until deadline where they could cash in more retaining Salary; whether its Armia or another player (Savard, Dvorak)</div></div>
Thats a good point i didnt even consider. what would the return be for him full salary then, the sens couldnt afford to do that in this scenario but just wondering

i don’t think i’d do it as the sens imo. he’s expensive and injured, but in the event he can shake the injuries we’ve just given a 30 goal 2 way centre away for nothing

I adore Thomas Chabot, and if he were dealt I'd probably never get over it. But frankly I have absolutely no faith in his ability to make it to the end of an 82 game season healthy. You can't build a team around an 8mil Dman you know is gonna start falling apart by January. How's he holding up in the playoffs.
Right now I'm honestly down to trade both.</div></div>
I would agree with the chabot injury thing, but it is worth noting that chychrun also averages about 60 GP a year too, this was his first year playing more than 70. If i had to trade one away, we may aswell trade the one who’s going to get the better return

big offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>1. If we trade Chychrun, the other team will be getting a full season out of him + an extension.
Vegas only got Hanifin for about 20 games before extending him.
2. Chychrun produced more than any other Sens defenceman on the powerplay both per 60 minutes and throughout the course of the season.
IMO, that should make him the best Sens defenceman on the PP.
3. If Ottawa completely flops on trading or extending Chychrun, then Steve Staios is Pierre Dorion 2.0.</div></div>
I think the primary point of value in both the hanafin & cychyrun deals (if they are both signing 8 year deals) is going to lie in the 8 years of contract they are signing, not the 20-40 or 60 games they play before that. Its maybe a small added bonus, but not the primary value of the deal.
chychun may have produced the most, but i dont think he was at all the most valuable piece on the PP. Our PP structure relies on the defensemen being able to facilitate play from the middle, and to me he was the 4th best at doing that behind chabot sanderson and even brannstrom in his super limited PP time. His PP value lies in his shooting, and because hes a shooter hes likely going to get more points than the facilitators.
I dont think you can at all put staios (whos likely not going to be the GM anyways) into the same conversation as dorion if a chychrun trade flops, especially given people on this website are setting insane expectations on what a return is going to look like. PD pigeonholed him by acquiring a d-man we didnt need at an insane price, hes just cleaning up the mess and situating this team for a better outlook

big offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>My hope is that we either get a 1st + two 2nds or something like what Calgary got for Hanifin.
And if not, we just sign him to an 8 year extension.
He's only coming off a terrible season because the entire team is coming off a terrible season.
If he was on a much better team than Ottawa or Arizona, he would likely thrive as an elite Top 4 defenseman.
Furthermore, this year was the first year that Chychrun played a full 82 game season.
And he did so while being our best D on the powerplay as well as playing 22+ minutes a night on his offside on a poorly constructed hockey team.
That has to count for something.</div></div>
Calgary got a super tame return for Hanafin who was going to be in a similar contract spot and was a way way better player this past season. He shouldnt get an 8 year extension from us either because hes not at all a fit, and is by far the most expendable piece on our blueline. He played propped-up, pillow-soft minutes in arizona and put up good but not elite results. His statisitical and analytical profile has him pretty clearly painted as a #3-#4 defenseman on a good team and this year has done nothing but reinforce that.
He also just staight-up wasn't the best defenseman on the PP. He couldn't operate the top of the umbrella because hes a shooter, and he was worse at distributing the puck than Chabot and Sanderson by a big gap. He was a fine shooting option on the PP2 but thats a super replaceable role.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>no the appeal here to both teams is moving out cap they could offload into something more useful.
Chychrun maybe more useful than Jarry to the Pens. But they don't need another high priced defenseman. It only makes sense if it's simply swapping numbers on the cap.
Not taking an extra 2 mil back.
Just like for OTT, it wouldn't make sens if I said, Chychrun for Jarry and Smith.
The cap doesn't work out for you.
You are better off just offering Jarry for Chychrun , both teams swap cap they want out for cap that could be more useful and not include Forsberg at all.
Just send him down to the AHL and save 1 mil on his cap.
See the pens don't need to dump Jarry. But if they did it has to work for them, not rack up their cap to benefit OTT.
It's like saying take Chychrun for 7 mil per, when they got EK at 10, Letang at 6, Graves at 4.5 and MP at 4.
There is no way. That cap number has to come down as they then spend to keep Ned which probably cost 2.5 or so and you are looking at 9.5 in cap to bring in another defenseman that is a luxury.
But if in the end it costs 4.6 for Chychrun and 2.5 for Ned, then it's not as bad and like adding a 2mil defenseman which isn't so much a over priced luxury.</div></div>
what if it was a smith-jarry forsberg-chychrun swap

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>Chychrun is a negative for both teams here.
Neither team wants to hold that cap. It's simply a swap of cap. Pens need another high priced defenseman like they need Crosby to retire.
You want to move out 7.35 for 5.375 and act like it's a steal.
It's not.
I'm asking a 1.375 to balance the cap out more. If you can't, sorry, don't have the cap space to do it. Pens got other needs like finding better forwards in FA.</div></div>
I wasnt meaning to act as though it was a steal, but I thought to go from Jarry-Ned in goal Ned-Forsberg would be worth adding Chychrun and 1.3m in cap. If theres not a value on Chychrun then it would kind of nullify any kind of deal centered around these 3
