(CAR/NYR) - Fox for 2019 2nd, 2020 conditional 3rd round picks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Oggsford_Blues</b></div><div>What confuses me is why the Rangers would give up anything, when Fox could have been had for free on July 1.
Anyone have any insights?</div></div>a) August 15th is the deadline to sign NCAA free agents.
b) Fox's rights don't technically expire until next year.
c) Given that he seems to already have proven that he's hit his ceiling at the NCAA level (120 P in 97 career games), he's probably eager to go ahead and start his pro career, but he said he would only sign with the Rangers. the Rangers obviously would want somebody like Fox, and they could have waited a year to sign him, but they'd run the (probably small) risk of some other team snatching him up, and that would also push any real evaluation of him back a year. if they want him in Hartford next year to evaluate and see whether or not he's as good as his NCAA numbers suggest, they need his rights in order to sign him. that would have given the Hurricanes some leverage in trade negotiations.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rangersandislesfan</b></div><div>That's an interesting number</div></div>
It is because the deal is prorated for this season. Its 1.2M 1.4M 2M, nice round numbers but because the deal is now prorated it throws the cap hit outta wack, also makes it a different cap hit each year.

San Jose Sharks signed Evander Kane (7 Years / $7,000,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Barathrum_Obama</b></div><div>in a vacuum, I'd call this a bad contract - however, given SJs situation I can understand it. how many years of contention do the sharks have left? maybe it's already too late, but with Pavelski and Burns aging, Couture and Kane in their prime.. it's okay to overpay up front. maybe isn't gonna be a 35 goal scorer at 30 anymore, but you pay them for their primes and tolerate them getting paid when they are in the back years of their contracts. a similar thing happened to Rick Nash (and the Rangers got an okay return for him at age 33 with a higher cap hit and probably lower production!) in 2 or 3 years, the sharks won't be signing UFAs anyway. they won't be in a cap crunch and that's why paying Kane now is WAY better than letting him go to UFA just because they wanted to save 500k on him.</div></div>
I agree. San Jose is in win now mode with a shallow prospect pool, and they needed more speed and scoring, especially with their core of veterans (Pavelski, Burns, Vlasic, Thornton(?), Braun) getting up there in age. It's not nearly as bad as most UFA contracts, given that Kane is only 26 compared to the 28-30 we usually see. But San Jose definitely needed to do something big to give their club some more life. It's kind of like the Ryan Johansen contract; it's definitely an overpay, but the team desperately needed that player to fill in the hole that was missing. The players had all the leverage in both situations.

Boston Bruins signed Trent Frederic (3 Years / $1,137,500 AAV)
man, we're really arguing about minutiae here. but here's my $0.02:
1) Frederic was, if I recall, a reach when he was selected at #29 in 2016 (most rankings had him as a late 2nd/early 3rd rounder), and that probably pissed off a lot of Bruins fans. I think Sweeney also slung around words like "hard work" and other such intangibles when describing Frederic, which didn't help. But he's put up 30+ points in 2 years at Wisconsin; pretty good for a 1st-rounder.
2) The downvoting is probably just trolling. Most people on here rarely rate ELC signings in a negative manner. (Frederic's status as a somewhat-unpopular-at-the-time 1st-round pick might be part of it, too.)
3) I'm ambivalent on the whole "to finish college or not to finish college, that is the question" thing. On the one hand, a lot of hockey players aren't prepared for life after hockey, and the NHLPA does absolutely nothing to help, so having that degree in hand actually gives players a chance at a way to transition to life after hockey. On the other hand, players who go through all 4 years of college in the NCAA have the option to just wait a few months and then become free agents, and most teams aren't interested in losing prospects in that manner. My opinion on the matter consists of a big wet fart noise and "the player's gotta be the one to make that decision, not people like us who fart around on Internet forums."

The most SINISTER Offer-Sheet in NHL history
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Alex_Hancock</b></div><div>With Eugene Melnyk unwilling to pay top dollar for players GM Joe Sakic could make an already lopsided Duchene deal even more impressive.
With Ottawa deferring their relinquishment of their 2018 selection to 2019 it gives rise to a unique opportunity. Mark Stone being an RFA open him up to offer sheets. Should the Avs make a $7,305,316 offer to Stone it would only require them to give up the AVS 1st, 2nd and 3rd. While the Sens would now own the Avs first three choices they would be without their best forward and with Karlsson likely leaving town they will be short of star talent needed to keep them afloat for the 2018-19 season. The Sens 2019 selection would be even more likely to yield a very high draft pick and would be forced to be given to the Avs.</div></div>
Alex. In RFA contracts, the total value of the contract in this case over 51m is divided by FIVE years for average over 10m which is compensation of four 1st rounders.

Artem Anisimov is not a first line centre. Brandon Saad is not a "high end" winger. That trade, in general, is trash, no way MTL gives up their first for that underwhelming package.

The most annoying/incorrect things each team's fans say
You made up a good amount of these.
Name 1 Columbus fan who thinks Jenner is going to be a star (besides <a href="/users/matt59" target="_blank">@matt59</a> ;)). Name 1 Caps fan that has said Burakovsky is likely to be a superstar. Name 1 Vegas fan that says they'll resign both those guys, especially after trading for Tatar. Name 1 Pens fan that thinks Tavares is a realistic option for them (as ridiculous as Pens fans are, this is even too farfetched ;)). Name 1 Florida fan in general. Name 1 Dallas fan that thinks Lindell can be anything more than a top four defenseman. Name 1 Sharks fan that says Vlasic is one of the "very best" dmen in the league. Same thing with a Wild fan and Dumba. Name 1 Preds fan that thinks they have one of the best prospect pools in the league. Name 1 Kings fan that thinks Kempe is going to be a superstar.
And for the bajillionth time, it makes sense for Ottawa to trade EK, and there is a very strong case for Taylor Hall to win the Hart.

Calgary Flames signed Mikael Backlund (6 Years / $5,350,000 AAV)
I feel like Backlund is one of the most underrated players in the league. He puts up similar offensive numbers than Derek Stepan and is a better defensive center. An excellent 2C option locked up for a great value. Well done Calgary.

How good is Marc Edouard Vlasic?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>
Solid defensive dman. Not quite a two way guy though IMO.
I think he's been lucky to have been able to play with Burns and the SJ Sharks during a time when they were at their best as to bring up his value. Swap him with OEL in Arizona for example and you'd see a large contrast of calibre of dmen. Vlasic's accolades have come moreso from his teammates then his ability alone. He had no business being on team Canada (Just like Bouwmeester) but due to his strong chemistry with Burns as was BO's with Pietrangelo, they were given an extra bump over guys who were clearly better players.
I'd take him on my team any day although his new contract pretty much negates the positive value he did have. 7M for a defensive dman is 2000's type thinking. The game has changed. Defensive dmen are on the way out. Two way dman have taken their place. Can't just be good defending and letting your partner do all the offense. You need to also. Vlasic, especially for the amount he'll be making next year, is not worth it.
P.S. this was totally a pitch @ Raif in V2. :laugh</div></div>
Vlasic is one of the best defensive defensemen in the NHL. He absolutely had business being on Team Canada and was one of their best shutdown defenseman. He didn't get chosen because of his chemistry with Burns because he doesn't even play with Brent Burns. he plays with Justin Braun, while Burns plays with Paul Martin. I don't think he warranted the contract he just got, but to say that he is essentially a product of the players around him is ridiculous.

But it doesn't improve the team at all.
Domi put up similar points to Okposo last year. Domi is on an ELC and will be cost controlled for a few more years. Okposo is averaging $6M per and has a NMC on a long term deal. Just based on cost-effectiveness alone, that makes zero sense.
