Description
In the description and the trades I will attempt to be as non biased as possible. Let me know how I do. ?

First look: The Hawks are going to be competitive yet again this year regardless of the past 2 seasons. The offense is one of the best in the NHL as long as some of the players still produce (i.e. Toews, Schmaltz, Saad). Fortin on the 4th line is questionable, but if we could give the 3rd and 4th lines the same ice time because they are both talented, the Hawks offense could lead the league. The goaltending is worse then it has been because we lost Darling but Forsberg is a Wild Card. He could be really good, really bad, or right in the middle. The defense is horrid. No exaggeration needed. The Hawks need defense. And that's what we are gonna give to them.

The trade: Jon Merril and Colin Miller for Ville Pokka, Michael Kempny, Vinnie Hinostroza, and a 2019 3rd. Jon Merril has been playing good with the Devils, but he can't be classified as an offensive defenseman because he only put up 6 points last year in 51 games. But he is a good defensive player regardless of the +\-. He played on New Jersey, who obviously won the lottery so they had to be bad. Miller is a good young defenseman, and even though he only had 13 points last year, I feel that he HAS offensive talent. And in Chicago he could use that and play all throughout the line up. In return, the Knights get Kempny, who can play on their roster this year and do good. Plus, he's still young. Next they get Vinne Hinostroza, who has tons of talent, but it just isn't working in Chicago, he could turn a new page with the Knights and be an important player for their franchise. Then you have Ville Pokka, who could be considered a bust. It is a little bit early and he is still "good" but he'd be a project for Vegas. Maybe he could find new motivation with all the casinos and stuff in Vegas. Then they have the 2019 3rd. This can be altered to a 2nd if needed.

Where will Chicago finish: I think Chicago is going to finish in the 1st Wild Card spot in the west. 4th in the Central.

Thanks for being real with your Hawks prediction.

The trade seems a little too favorable to CHI. Obviously VGK has to move some defenseman, but I don't think Merrill or Miller are the guys they'll try to shop. You say Kempny is still young, yet he's older than both Merrill and Miller, and way less experienced. I think CHI would have to make it a better pick and possibly exchange Hinostroza for someone like Hartman or Hayden. Don't those guys have more upside than Hinostroza?

I actually don't think Hartman and Hayden do. I remember seeing Hinostroza in a game this year toe drag (and I mean a full toe drag) on a defenseman, he just didn't score. He has elite talent he just doesn't have a spot in Chicgao. I agree with you on the value standpoint though, we should probably switch the 3rd for a 2nd and Merrill for Garrison with retained salary or something.

I don't think the Hawks will be very good with Saad/Toews/Kane line. It's a scary good line, but the other 3 lines don't look very dangerous. The bottom-6 (however it shakes out) doesn't look good and could be taken advantage of by deeper teams (Dallas, Jets, Wild).

A top-6 of (is a team I'd be more scared of playing against)
Saad/Toews/Panik
Sharp?/AA/Kane

I don't see why Vegas would make the trade.
Merrill might not fit at all with the Hawks. NJD are a heavy trapping team, that isn't the game the Hawks play.

I'm really not sure where the Hawks shake out in the Division standing. Crawford, Kane, Keith, and Toews always give them a chance, but the room for error is a lot smaller this season (imo). Dallas looks like a powerhouse. Jets might have gotten a goalie that won't lose them a lot of games. Nashville went to the Finals last year, but still need more centers. It depends what version of Jake Allen turns up next year for STL (Hitchcock or Yeo coached version). My Wild, well who knows with them, damn Jekyll and Hyde team. I can see any of these teams finishing top-3 in the Division, or any of them finishing right above the Avs (WTF is going on in Col?).

I think both WC's go to the Pacific Division. They have 3 bad teams (AZ, Vegas, and Van) to beat up on and earn some easier points.

I meant to put Panik with Toews and Saad. Whoops. I do know that Kane is on line 2 don't worry.

Thanks for all the feedback dude, I still disagree with the Pacific getting the 2 wild cards. But everybody is entitled to their opinion.

I also think that the bottom six is pretty good. Kero has proved himself to be a good player, Bouma is there for a physical six of the game and can still score 10-15 goals. And Fortin is a wildcard. He showed tons of speed and skill in preseason last year. The 3rd line in my opinion is deadly, with 20 goal Hartman, potential 20-25 goal and defensive Sharpie, and last year Hayden put up good numbers for the time that he played.

I think Hawks will make one move, sign Franson after day one. I also think Le Dauphen is going to surprise everyone and slot nicely into the 3rd line center. I'm a big fan of Hayden, Hartman and Schmaltz as a line too. Sharp slots in with Kaner and is there to shoot. Big question mark is Toews. What kind of season he has will determine if Hawks are playoff team or not. Cant believe I'm saying that but another season as just another guy will not make this team elite. I'm hoping he has a Crosby-esque turnaround. I thnk that is good point about the West beating up on those poor teams to steal a WC slot.

As far as the trade, it is sloped in Chi favor. There is no reason Vegas would make the trade. They get little to nothing from it.
Hinostroza is nothing special. He is skilled, but not REALLY skilled, and he is very fast. But he was very bad last year in the NHL. He is 23 and won't get much better. Will be a bottom 6 guy for the rest of his career.
Kempny is hard to say but he is 26 and has 1 year of NHL experience. Not exactly worth a lot. He could end up being a regular but probably as a bottom 3 guy.
Pokka is 23 and hasn't seen NHL ice. He has the skills and smarts to play at the NHL level but he is SLOW.

Both Merrill and Miller have over 1 year NHL experience and have both shown to be dependable. They have higher value than any of the Hawks involved in this trade. This is just my 2 cents.

As far as line. It will almost certainly be Saad-Toews-Panik and Sharp-AA-Kane to start the season. Schmaltz may crack that top 6 but he might get a shot a 3C since that is his natural position. Hartman and maybe Hayden fill in the rest of that 3rd line making the first 3 lines quite skilled and productive. Hartman can probably cracks the 20 goal plateau with these lines. The 4th line will be a crap shoot with Kero, Bouma, and possibly Dauphin fighting for C. I think the real wild card this year is Jurco. The Hawks do truly believe he can be good player and will probably give him shots at the top 9 at some point this year similar to Panik last year.
Bouma will not be good for 10-15 goals. He has put up more than 5 goals once in his career and has in fact only put up more than 15 points once. He'll be this years GRINDER.
Tootoo, Hinostroza, Wingels, Fortin, Dauphin, will likely all be in and out of the lineup and called up/down for a good part of the year.

Just out of curiosity what are the PK units going to be this year for the Hawks. Kruger, Hammer, Hossa, and Rasmusson are all gone and they covered a lot of PK time.

I really don't know. Maybe something like:
Toews-Saad
Keith-Murphy

Kero-Anisimov
X player-Seabrook

I agree with this. Idk how Murphy is on the PK though. He may be a 2nd PK unit guy.
In this scenario Merrill would definitely be on the PK.
Bouma and Hartman would likely be the 5th-6th forwards who fill in when needed.
