Description
I doubt any of the coveted free agent right handed d will sign with Ottawa. It's a reality of the marketplace when these guys can sign in no tax, sunshine states. So instead we're going to rebuild our d-core via trades. And Chabot and Chychrun are out in this scenario.

Really? They get a cost-controlled top 4 dman who is 3 years younger, and who's contract ends 3 years earlier than Weegar's. Plus 2 draft picks. I think a 1 for 1 isn't doable, but with the extra picks I see this as pretty equitable. Weegar's contract might start to age out soon. I like the deal for both teams.

Chabot has a terrible contract that aged out the second he signed it, he can't (or won't) defend and usually misses a lot of injury time. A deferred 2nd and a 4th doesn't come close to making up the gap, and I doubt they'd consider it even if you did make up the gap properly. I suppose some GM will foolishly overpay for Chabot, but I cannot imagine Calgary being that team.

Plus, seeing as how Weegar is the only smile inducing piece from the Matty trade, I think the the Flames would very much hesitate to ponder shipping him out.

When a player is making $8M, he is no longer cost controlled. He is paid to be a difference maker on a nightly basis. Chabot is a pretty good D, but I don't see him as a true #1D. Moreover, his injury history is pretty long so you can pencil him in to miss 10-20 games a season.

I could be overvaluing Weegar, but at $6.5M he truly is cost controlled for the next 7 years.

I guess by "cost-controlled" I am referring to a cap that will be north of $92 million in two years. A top 4 guy will likely be worth $10-11 mil per season soon. And yes Weegar is a steal at $6.5 million, and I don't want to minimize what I think of him (otherwise why make this ACGM trade?). I was thinking that he's 3 years older and the aging curve will hit him sooner than Chabot. And the beauty for Calgary is that Chabot is a 3 year vs. a 7 year commitment. Either way, totally get where you're coming from.

Realistically, I see the Sens shipping Chychrun and holding on to Chabot.

Personally, I like both Chychrun and Chabot, both are quality #2/3D. It just seemed like a bit of a lateral move without a clear direction for the Flames.

I also don't see Weegar aging very poorly, but a part of that could be getting spoiled by having Giordano as a top pairing D into his late 30s.

I can definitely see the Flames moving on from Weegar at some point, I just don't see it happening this season. Especially after Weegar publically stated he wanted to see things through and have a bigger leadership role for the Flames.

If the Flames were going to trade a D this offseason it would likely be Andersson IMO.

Weegar seems to me to be an ideal guy to have as part of a leadership group for any team. Cheers. Would the Flames consider moving Andersson?

No idea, but I think that the Flames will trade him for the right price(anything close to what Chychrun got).

You might have been right after all, there are rumors on Flames forums now around Weegar and OTT 7th, hope they're not true, but it's going to be a fun draft day...

    Have a good one!
