Oof. If that's all that is available for those players and picks, Winnipeg should stand pat.

There was a lot of interest in Smith last TDL, it was the extra year that killed the idea of moving him.
Teams wanted the flexibility to figure it out going forward.
I think after the FA rush, the market on Smith will be stronger. There will be teams who did not get what they needed and will be more willing to trade for a rental.
If the price is right the penguins will move, after all they still have to field a team too.
I don't think that's the right price to be honest. I think they will ask for at least a 3rd.
Personally I think they keep him, as they don't have much ability to attract FA right now. If they can't attract a FA winger of any real value, then cap won't be an issue and they will need players on the wing.

Could do with or without smith honestly. I might be willing to do a third though.

I think a lot of people and teams probably feel the same way on Smith, with or without that is.
But I think the lack of wingers is what will make his market.
But that all depends if PIT can move him. That doesn't mean other teams being interested it means they might not be able to move him.
They need a winger in FA too, a 1LW there are like 3 guys who can fill that role out there, and 1 of them in Jake is not coming to PIT. They can't afford him.
PIT heading into a rebuild, probably isn't a prime destination for anyone willing to sign a long term deal. So where does that leave them, especially if they move Smith?

This is why I think Smith is staying in PIT till TDL. It's not that they wouldn't move him, it's that they can't move him. Their own roster will have too many holes if they do because they can't attract guys like they use to.

They have hit the wall. Like other teams out there who couldn't fill their needs in FA, they will be stuck settling. Which is how they would have moved Smith to begin with. Some team, not getting what they need in FA, settling for Smith to play wing as simply being better than what they have, and best of what is available and on a rental contract so don't have to carry it forward and easy to dump later if they need to at TDL.

It is what it is.
