I wouldn't give up Toropchenko for Iafallo with a zero dollar salary hit

There's no point for Winnipeg to pay a premium to downgrade and not save cap.

This seems to be prioritizing squeaking back into the playoffs next season more than actually retooling. Retooling is attempting to make moves that help both the present and the future simulatenously- ie, trading for 26 year old Brayden Schenn while he was under contract for a few more years, moving out 30 year olds who aren't going to be apart of the future (Tarasenko, O'Reilly, Shattenkirk).

I don't see much being done for the future here outside of acquiring Bear, who might be a good buy low candidate but probably not as low as Washington is selling him for here. Instead we're adding older players to the lineup, blocking our younger prospects from more ice time.

Brandon Saad is 31, Marchment is better and younger. The Iaffalo trade was an error, because of the retained salary. Dadonov is UFA next year, he could get a good return in a big trade.

Yes I agree, Marchment is better and younger than Saad, but I don't think he is significantly better or younger to justify paying/retaining in order to swap the two. He's 29, he's on the backend of his prime, and he'll need a new contract at 31. This is not a guy that's likely to be a crucial piece when the Blues are exiting their retool. He'll help the roster right now, but I'm not trading picks to help the roster right now unless it's a player that will also be a factor 2-3 years from now.

I don't know what you're seeing in the market where a 35 year old winger who wasn't even half a ppg last season is fetching a "good return" in a "big trade", but I think it's very unlikely that they get anything approaching the assets they would hypothetically be giving up for this trade. I'd rather have the extra year of development on the long-shot they're drafting in the 2nd round this year.

If Marchment or Dadanov is 26, maybe it's a different story.

Would assume the Jets would jump at that overpay.
