I think if they could get Cates it would have happened already.

If I were a betting man, I think the Sabres are/were interested in Laughton, not Cates. The Cates being interested by Buffalo thing was started by an unsubstantiated rumor from blog. It’s also been well documented that the Sabres have been linked to Laughton, and they need his playing style.

The Flyers don’t have interest in moving Cates right now and they are really high on him.

Cates would be a nice addition as a bottom six center/LW, but I don’t think the Flyers want to move a stout defensive forward who is 25 with team control for two more years. Theres simply other guys they want to move first like Laughton, Ristolainen, or Farabee. That Cates to Buffalo thing came from a blog and it was completely unsubstantiated

Wrong. They were interested in Cates, not Laughton.

I doubt it, the analytics department would veto any Laughton trade. Analytically, he’s worse than Skinner defensively, and does not have anywhere near the production to make up for it.
