You're assuming they don't plan to move on from him this offseason? A signed player on a manageable cap hit is a lot easier to trade than one that needs to be signed with the acquiring team not knowing how much cap they'll need.

Probably, but $2.4m isn't some huge hurdle for an acquiring team to overcome. I wouldn't be upset if the Wild gave up a minor asset (so not a 1st round pick or blue chip prospect) to see if there's anything they can do with him. $2.4m for 1 year? That's a pretty low risk.

To be clear, they're likely not getting a good return on him at this point since we're officially into the "desperately needs a change of scenery to have a chance at salvaging a career" phase of his time in NY. But there's still a chance he can rebound somewhere else and his new deal doesn't really prevent him from being traded.

Maybe it's time for you to move on too...
