Both Laine and Couture are a gamble due to recent injuries. If both are fully healthy I think Couture is the better player. He can defend as well as score and he's a leader. However Laine is much younger and provides more offense which is why the Sharks would do this.

If Couture rebounds he gives the CBJ offense, defense, and veteran leadership. If he doesn't, he goes on LTIR and costs them nothing in terms of cap space.
