1.What if player agents are using capfriendly to get certain data on teams and players and are using it against nhl teams in negotiations? And the caps don't like it.
Idk. Everything on CapFriendly is public info. But there is something fishy going on. Why would they buy it, when it is already free to use, and then just shut it down?
When I see some of the signings the NHL GMs make (coming from a Leaf fan), far too many NHL GMs are poor at cap management. Maybe they should be CF fans, it might have helped them in their job.
Plausible reason: they want data to populate their models and see the value in information asymmetry.
Far fetched reason: they know other team staff use and want their personal histories… all data will be their probably so they would know who you are viewing, buying out, whatever.

The Caps had a lacking data analytics department and likely just wanted the personnel working at CF. The site being shut down is probably just a side effect of that as it no longer benefits them to keep the data public.

The data is public, though. It's just less accessible now.

yeah, capfriendly is more of just a tool with good aggregated data and now having that tool public isnt really beneficial for the caps, although im sure puckpedia will have their own ACGM up and running by july 5th so im not sure theres going to be that much benefit in going private, just likely don't want to deal with the maintenance costs of keeping the site up.

For sure. And like you said before, CapFriendly will essentially be WSH's analytics department now. Although I don't think CF has many employees. Even the admins are volunteers. But now they can take it and mold it in whatever way suits them.
