Description
Reports of the Canucks not being happy with Pettersson using his ankle injury as an excuse for his average play in the 2nd half of the season. I wonder if they are angry enough to listen to offers.

They aren’t trading him. And to think you’d get him without including at least 1 of Suzuki, Slaf, Caufield, Reinbacher, or 5OA is delusional. It probably takes 2 of those pieces to headline the package

That is a massive offer. As a non fan, I have to think they consider that. So many good young assets plus a ton of money to spend.

Eichel got what again?

Tuch = Newhook
Krebs = Mailloux
2022 1st (16th overall) = Xhekaj bros, CGY 1st and 26th overall
2023 2nd 64th overall < 2025 unprotected MTL 1st

I give more than what Eichel got in return which makes sense as Pettersson is about the same level player (dont be delusional) while having more term but higher AAV

Seravalli's reporting isn't the most trusted wouldn't use it as gospel for Vancouver wanting to move him. that said. you need more quality than quantity. your looking at least 5OA Rienacbher and one of Slaf Caufield or Suzki.

Pettersson is a better player than Eichel, has more term, and doesn’t need major neck surgery

Tuch > Newhook
Krebs > Mailloux (slightly)
2022 1st = CGY 1st, 26th overall, Xhekaj bros
2023 2nd < 2025 1st

But the Canucks would want quality in a hypothetical Pettersson trade, not quantity. It starts with at least 1 of those pieces I listed

2024 26th OA
2025 (11-32nd) OA
2025 ~10 OA
Best case you get like 10th and 11th picks next year draft. Worst case you get 15th and 32nd. Plenty of value in these draft picks. Logan Mailloux could allow you to deal Hronek for a forward (like Ehlers), or keep him and have a strong defence group.
Newhook adds to middle six.
More cap space may allow you to resign likes of Lindholm etc.
Xhekaj bros bring you physicality in a system and coach that they'd thrive under.
Idk Vancouver... I was a big Patterson fan for a while, but he doesn't move the needle as much as I once thought. This is a huge offer.

Newhook has 34 points in 55 games while Tuch had 33 in 55 games. So unless youre complete;y biased against Habs players, idk how you think Tuch is better.

Mailloux at 21 just had 47 points in 72 AHL games and looked at home in the NHL, as a rookie. Krebs had 13 in 18 games but then stunk in the NHL while he wasnt even a rookie.

Teams never get quality when they trade a big piece like that, they always get a lot of decent prospects and picks to make up the value. Flames with the Tkachuk trade is the only ones who thought they were getting an elite talent back for an elite player.

name me 3 somewhat recent trades where an elite player gets traded for elite pieces. Cause i can name many more trades where the value is lower than what i offered

A guy like Pettersson whos locked up for 8 years and just hitting his prime has never been traded before. Eichel was coming off of a major neck injury and forced his way out of Buffalo and they still got Alex Tich Krebs and 2 firsts. None of the players in that trade have close to value Tuch or even Krebs did at the time, the firsts are fine i guess but the Canucks arent trading Petey at all and certainly not for futures

Think of the Joe Thornton trade, or the Eichel trade or Seguin to the Stars. Gms ask for quality but always end up wioth quantity. Its how trades work. You never acquire a player of similar quality is a trade. You get a package of players and picks that are meh compared to Pettersson, but have good value in themselves

Tuch had put up 50 points before the trade, Newhook just set his career high. Tuch was also better defensively

Mailloux had a great rookie season in the AHL, but Krebs was also ranked as a highly regarded prospect. They are close, and I’m fine calling them even

Pettersson is probably even more valuable than Tkachuk was at the time of his trade now. At worst the same value. Pettersson plays the more valuable position, already has a long term contract, hasn’t requested a trade, and is also a 100+ point player

I didn’t ask for a player of similar quality because Montreal doesn’t have a player of similar quality. It would start with at least one of Montreal’s elite assets because the Canucks would have all the leverage in this scenario

Not an 8 year deal but Jumbo Joe got traded for essentially depth pieces right after signing a 3 year deal worth 20 million in 05-06, in which he ended winning the art ross

Erik Karlsson had 4 years left of 11.5m when he was dealt, oh he also had 101 points as a Dman. Traded for junk

Eichel had 5 years left of a 10m deal and traded for a top 6 winger and junk

Phill Kessel got traded 1 year into his 8 year deal, for junk

Pronger got trade 1 year into his 5 year deal for meh pieces

Brads Richards got traded 1 year onto his 5 year deal

Dan Boyle got traded 1 year into his 6 year deal

You are incredibly biased if you think Pettersson is more valuable than a guy who had 104 points and was elite defensively when traded.

Tuch had a 50 point year before, but he was also 2 years older than what newhook is now.

You overrate Pettersson way too highly then. Hes not a top 5, 10 oe top 15 in the league. I would say around top 20

Def not a top 5 center with McDavid, Draisaitl, Mack, Barkov and Matthews ahead of him, with the likes of Hughes, Bedard, Crosby and possibly JT Miller right behind (and arguments can be made they are better than him aside from bedard , who will be better than him in like 2 years)

Thornton and Pronger are the only somewhat good comparables there, and even then those weren’t as long of a contract. Plus Pronger requested a trade and was still traded for 2 recent top 10 picks, 2 1sts, and a 2nd. The other guys were either multiple years into their contracts or not on the level of Pettersson

Pettersson has back to back seasons of 100 and then 90 points (107 point pace prior to injury), plays the more valuable position, has a long term contract, and didn’t request a trade. It’s not that outrageous to say he’s more valuable than Tkachuk was

You can definitely make an argument he’s the 5th best center ahead of Barkov

Pettersson is probably in the 10-20 range league wide
