Description
Was trying to find a good comp for Cam Fowler. Its really tough. On one hand, he was -9 GAR player last year, but on the other, he was still pretty close to 0.5 ppg playing 24+ minutes a night.

Based on similar age, contract, and on-ice performance...a very random selection of comps came up.

Recent comps using Age, Contract and WAR

Duncan Keith (2021): Caleb Jones, 2022 3rd (with Tim Soderlund)
Patrik Nemeth (2022): Ty Emberson (with 2025 2nd, 2024 3rd)
Brooks Orpik (2018): 2018 2nd (with Philipp Grubauer)
Kevin Bieksa (2015): 2016 2nd
Rob Scuderi (2016): Christian Ehrhoff (15% retained)
Marc Methot (2017): Dylan Ferguson, 2020 2nd

Recent comps using Age, Contract and point production

James Wisniewski (2015): Anton Khudobin
Jeff Petry (2023): Mike Hoffman, Rem Pitlick (with Casey DeSmith, Nathan Legare, 2025 2nd)
Ryan McDonagh (2022): Philippe Myers, Grant Mismash
Ryan Ellis (2021): Nolan Patrick, Philippe Myers
Nate Schmidt (2020): 2022 3rd round pick
Niklas Hjalmarsson (2017): Connor Murphy, Laurent Dauphin

(interesting that a number of these had goalies included...that wasn't planned)

If the Ducks move Fowler they do it to open up the spot at LD with Minty, Zell, and Lacombe, so no LD coming back.

Fowler has a 4 team trade list as well, so ANA wouldn’t have much leverage. I’d personally be totally cool with a 2nd if they wanted to move him. With so few veteran D and a desire to become competitive, I don’t see it happening though

If I could jetison Fowler from our roster for any of those I would, other than veteran presence he doesn't have a spot on this roster anymore, we need stay at home D to mentor the kids, and Cam just doesn't.

I don’t know enough about Cam Fowler to make a decision so I’ll ask ducks fans these questions:
      1. Would you define Cam Fowler as an offensive or a stay at home defenseman?
      2. Does he require time on the power play (even the second unit) to get full effectiveness out of him?
      3. Can he kill penalties?

      1. Offensive guy // puck mover
      2. You do get more out of Cam points wise if he plays powerplay but I don’t think he has to
      3. Yes he kills penalties

(not a ducks fan, but will give my take regardless)

      1. I would say neither...two-way guy that would be a plus for NJD for d-zone exits. Bahl is good defensively in own zone, but cannot hit a pass into neutral zone...which stalls transition game. And for a team built like ours, it was a back breaker. Smith was no better. Fowler has his flaws, but still produces a high rate of controlled exits from d-zone recovery points. In other worlds, we have all these speedy forwards that can maintain possession through neutral zone, but the puck doesn't get to them as much as it did last year with Graves and Severson (the latter being one of the better puck movers in the game). Fowler would help in that regard. And remember the the Sevo stretch pass? We didn't see many of those this year. Here were NHL leaders in stretch pass completion rates this year:

      Owen Power.....78.2%
      Adam Fox..........77.6%
      Cam Fowler.......77.5% <---
      Josh Morrissey..76.6%
      Cale Makar........75.3%

      2. I don't think he plays PP here as long as Luke and Dougie are dressed.

      3. Yes, was Ducks leader in PK last year, but probably plays 2nd PK here.

Would likely have to be okay with deal, but there are worse places than sunny New Jersey.

      We can send....

Santeri Hatakka, defensive dman, who was a nice surprise throw-in on Meier deal
Daniil Misyul, a physical dman with good puck skills, but positioning means nothing to him.

      ...or the tissues

Offensive leaning all around minute muncher. Yes, he needs PP time to get full use. Yes, he does kill penalties. He's very durable, but that's because he doesn't play physical.
