I think after they lose out this year they will continue to need to make improvements to offense, they are deep at defense and he is on a 1 year deal, and it's certainly an overpay for an above average aging defenseman who costs over $5M.

I mean if they get one of Pesce, Skjei, DeAngelo to resign they're still more deep than the average team. They'll probably get two of em though.

That's a comical underpayment for Slavin. How much more are Toronto adding to make this even remotely considerable for Carolina?

How? He's old and not the defenseman he was even 2 years ago. $5.3M for him is arguably too much at this point. They're getting a 100 point winger to help score which they've clearly had problems with late in the season the last few years.

Larry Lowballing on Stephenson.

He'll get 6 mil.

You obviously don't watch any Canes games.

I'm not even sure you watch hockey?

Are you high???? Slavin is still the best D man in the league in his own zone. Marner's never hit 100 points, and is a known playoff ghost. He's got as many points as Slavin this postseason, but Slavin is a DEFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN. Slavin is still one of the best LD (in my honest opinion, the best) left-handed defensemen in the league. You think 5.3 is TOO MUCH? That is probably the most comical thing I've seen on this website.

For a 30 year old who’s coming off a 16 goal season with a below 50% expected goals percentage? I find it hard to believe. Sure maybe 3, even 3.5, but no where close to 6.

Ehh lets relax he has a 43% on-ice goals percentage this playoffs, and a 47.1% expected goals percentage. Those aren't even top 25 defenseman numbers (not saying he isn't a top 25D, but he certainly isn't top 10, and without a doubt is not top 10 anymore. He has 1 goal and 1 secondary assist in 8 playoff games, not bad but not great. Also, ur right about Marner he had 99 points in 80 games, not 100.

You can analyze his declining numbers here: https://moneypuck.com/player.htm?p=8476958

He's playing next to fossilized Brent Burns... his stats without Burns skyrocket. He's undoubtedly still a top 5 D man in the NHL, watch him for yourself

Fair enough, but still, Burns has higher expected goals % with most other defenseman on the Canes (so does Slavin so maybe they aren't a good match lol).

I just think the Canes have to giveup on this heavy depth D strategy after it's clearly failed them year after year. Look what adding Guentzel did, you need playmakers and goal scorers to feed your top guys (and to take feeds from them).

Also I wouldn't go as far as to say Marner is a ghost in the playoffs he has 50 points in 57 games.

For someone that will command as much as he will, having 4 different postseasons where you had less than 5 points in a 7 game series (I'm excluding the playin against Columbus) isn't good enough.

On the flip side, this is Aho. A touch higher in PPG during the postseason, but look how much more consistent he is. This is ALWAYS going to be the knock on Marner

Oh don't get me wrong I would much rather have Aho in the playoffs, I'm just saying Canes are probably heavily interested in having a playmaker next to him from now on given he's averaged < 0.3 goals per game in the playoffs the last few seasons when he could be averaging a lot more.

No, Aho IS the player. They need someone that can put the puck in the net. Marner just doesn't do that, especally not in the playoffs. 11 playoff goals in 57 playoff games is the exact opposite of what the Canes need. They need a Matthews, not a Marner

But why can’t that be Aho? He’s been on pace for near 40 goal seasons (pretty much) for the last 5 seasons. Matthews is a once in a generation goal scorer, all a Stanley cup winning team needs is 1 40 goal scorer, sometimes not even that.
