Just simple suggestion.

Since Askarov is young, you should try and put a veteran goalie with him as backup with playoff experience.

You’ve got the Leafs “selling low” on Marner for just 1 year of Saros coming off a “down” season

NSH probably has to add more imo

Yeah probably. Maple Leafs don't have much leverage in a Marner trade considering they're giving Marner the boot. Plus, the Leafs have cap trouble to make Marner's contract work next season and other teams know this. Don't see the Leafs getting too much in a Marner trade

NSH doesn't move those pieces for Marner.

Evangelista is untouchable as it currently stands as he is one of the best young pieces NSH has. NSH moving Evangelista is the equivalent of TOR moving Knies.

Tomasino could be on the way out, so NSH might package him as part of a deal, but NSH would rather trade Saros for a center as NSH center depth is genuinely awful. After O'Reilly it falls off a cliff.

I won't say no to Marner if Trotz can't make a Saros deal happen, but during the end of season media coverage, Trotz stated he had ever intention of resigning Saros ASAP.

Also, to add NSH isn't likely going to draft another RW in the 1st round. Likely drafting a C or RD at 22nd

1- Who says they’re giving Marner the boot?

2- Even if that’s true- big “if” imo- NSH would still have to outbid other teams who would surely be interested in Marner

I doubt that Marner ends up going “cheap”
Leafs should still get a good return, as not all GMs will blame him for the Leafs playoff woes like their fan base seems to be

If the Marner extension is in place to Nashville, I don't see how the Leafs can say no to the trade.

Why is it "just 1 year of Saros", when Marner is also a UFA at the same time? I know the OP is assuming Marner extends with NSH, but why not just assume Saros extends with TOR then?

Either way, NSH declines. The cost is too high, Evangelista is a no go (and one of the reasons why NSH likely isn't interested in Marner anyway), Hildeby isn't as valuable to NSH as he would be to TOR, as they have Askarov.

1- bc Marner is younger & better

2- NSH would be STUPID if they didn’t do this (assuming they don’t mind paying Marner)
Getting a player of Marner's caliber, when the main piece coming back is an aging & declining goalie, would be an absolute steal

And no, I’m not a Leafs’ fan or from Canada
I actually hate the Leafs
Just don’t have any super biased homer views like some obviously do, Lol

They're both UFAs, so younger doesn't really mean much over the course of a year (neither player is old enough where you worry about age related decline over the course of the season). I still say treating one player like they're a rental, while pretending the other comes with an extension, does nothing to help assess trade value though.

It's difficult to compare goalies and skaters, but of the two Saros was definitely better in the post-season, for what that's worth.

Yeah, giving Marner that huge new contract probably is a point of concern for NSH. RW is far from their biggest need, and that money would be better spent on at center and RD. Nyquist can still hold down the fort on the top line for another year. He's already got great chemistry with Forsberg and O'Reilly and he's an absolute bargain for someone who was a top 40 scorer this past season. Looking into the future, NSH has Evangelista, Kemell, Tomasino, Wood, Fink, etc - Marner doesn't really fill a hole for NSH. At least not one that justifies paying him $11M or more, plus giving up whatever assets it would take to trade for him.

You may not be a Leafs fan, but your super biased views on Saros specifically (and goalie value in general) is just as evident as any you may think I have.

I don’t have ANY “biased views” on Saros
You just don’t like FACTS bc you’re a homer
FACT- he’s approaching 30 & not getting younger
FACT- he had a down season
Again, those aren’t my opinions, those are FACTS

U Wanna hang your hat on Saros being better on a super small sample size of 6/7 games, then that’s your choice
But it seems pretty dumb to me to focus on that over an entire season

And Mariner’s age & position matter GREATLY
Bc even though they’re both under contract for only 1 year,
a team would (OBVIOUSLY) prefer to invest in the younger player who is more likely to continue his great play for longer

This isn’t rocket science
Marner is inarguably more valuable than Saros

This three page tantrum you had because no one accepted your junk offer for Saros, indicates otherwise:

https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/4914987

Your argument that any team would obviously throw a huge extension at Marner, but wouldn't think of extending Saros is flawed. 30 isn't old for a goalie. Money is a legitimate concern for owners, and cap space is a legitimate concern for GMs. Marner is already eating up a huge amount of both, and presumably would want more on an extension. A top goalie provides more on ice value than a top winger (and at a lower cost too). There are numerous reasons a team might choose to invest in Saros over Marner.

I can randomly scream these things in ALL CAPS, if that helps (I'm guessing you think it does).
