Detroit Red Wings 2024 Season

Description
First order of business will be to move a couple players out at the draft. Maatta and Fabbri are cap casualties with Fabbri costing a small amount to move. Maatta can be a good veteran depth replacement for Ottawa if they move Chychrun.

For the draft, I selected Brandsegg-Nygard. I think he has a lot of characteristics this team needs. I'm not sure if the offense is there for him but we will see.

Trade up to grab a player. Should be a couple decent players fall a bit, Andrew Basha would be my first choice but I doubt he's available.

Buyout Holl, not worth paying him 3.4M to play 30 games. He can go find a team that will play him more.

Trade for Matt Roy and Steven Stamkos signing rights to not only try and win them over but potentially get a little better contract signed for the team.

Kane decides to stay after the Stamkos and Roy signings.

Re-signed Fischer and Veleno to matching two year deals. I could see Veleno getting more but I would like to see a bit more improvement and consistency before signing him to a bigger deal. He could work his way into a deal similar to Rasmussen in the future.

Signed Berggren to a one year deal so he can hopefully work his way to a better contract.

Signed Johansson to a cheap one year deal. If he proves himself at the NHL level he can get a bit bigger contract next season.

Added Johnson and Clutterbuck for depth. They probably find better contracts if they go to other teams. They basically just represent a couple veterans on cheap deals.

I have Husso getting another set back and not being able to play next season, likely a pipe dream. Just wanted the extra cap. Since he is out in this scenario, I re-signed Reimer for cheap. He was decent for us. Goaltending will definitely be a weak point of this team. I also expect Cossa to get a couple games at some point this season.

I have Kasper and Danielson starting in the AHL. Kasper I want him to get some solid reps as 1C this season. Danielson I just want him to get a good look at a higher pace. I could see at least one or both players getting looks in the NHL this year and likely on the team 25-26 season.

Mazur makes the team out of camp in a bottom 6 roll. These bottom two lines can likely be interchanged.

ASP plays in Sweden again this year and maybe joins Grand Rapids at the end of the year. I could see them trying to save a year on his ELC and wait for him to come over next season.

MBN plays another season in Europe as well. Comes over next year to play in Grand Rapids. I do feel that he is one of the more NHL ready prospects of this draft.

I didn't address forward physicality or defensive play but the defense is alot more physical than last year and should be better defensively as well.

The powerplay might take a bit of a hit not having an offensive defenseman to quarterback it. I would expect Seider and Walman to QB the PPs. I'm hoping adding Stamkos will make up for it.

All in all I expect this team to make the playoffs unless we get hit hard with injuries. I wouldn't be a buyer at the deadline but also not selling again.

I dunno that I'd use analytics for any Red Wing considering analytics were calling Petry a better defender than Seider most of the year.

That said, Maatta gave Hronek the best hockey of his Detroit career. I like him. He has a **** up every now and then but he's usually pretty responsible.

Between Brisebois and Stamkos they must have collectively said my plan is to get it done in some form or other half a dozen times. Stamkos retires a career Bolt

I would have to agree with you but until pen is inked on paper, he is free game. I see him retiring in Tampa as well but he would be a dream add.

He has been a really steady defender his entire career. He gets no credit cause he isn't flashy. People see the one or two bad plays and think he's trash.

I honestly wouldn't object to keeping him this year just so AlJo has somebody to battle with for a spot. Run Walman - Edvinsson - Maatta - AlJo on the left and throw Chiarot on the right. Get Petry and Holl the **** out of here lol.

Depends if Detroit is a legit candidate to get Matt Roy or not

      Wouldn't effect it, for me.

      Walman - Seider
      Edvinsson - Roy
      Maatta/AlJo - Chiarot

My fear is that they like Chiarot with Seider. It was passable late this season when Walman got hurt. It was awful last season.

I'm hoping Edvinsson takes that top pairing spot by end of season.

I think we're still a few years from Edvinsson/Seider. Not because of Edvinsson's readiness, but because the defense wont be deep enough to not want those guys split up and on the ice for 45 out of 60 minutes.

It may be a case where they're split up and then if there's a minute left up one with the goalie pulled, they're both on the ice.

If we sign Roy, we would have that depth. Walman - Roy second pair, like I have in my second part of this, would be decent I think. Chiarot Petry wouldn't be the worst third pair out there with Aljo competing with Petry for a spot. Chiarot can play both sides.

I would say it's a bit optimistic as well but not unreasonable. Please check out the 2025 and 2026 seasons I made in sequence.

Holl is a buyout candidate. That much money for 30 games, he had to go, take the hit. Petry can stay as third pair. He might do well in that roll, he shouldn't be in the top 4 anymore.

That's basically what I have here. Aljo sub in for Petry to get reps. That quote was speaking more in the future hoping that Edvinsson can move up to top pair.

      Buyout.

Sadly I think they'll run Petry's contract out, but Holl is gone one way or another.

Yeah Petry can stick around in a third pairing roll. His buyout sucks. Not worth it. Maybe we will get lucky and he won't pass the physical?

I think his buyout is fine I just dunno if Yzerman really wants something like $6M in dead cap on the books next year.

I think his buyout is fine I just dunno if Yzerman really wants something like $6M in dead cap on the books next year.

If you factor in how much you save and the cost of a replacement player. Could be considered expensive.

yeah i hope stamkos is not a wing. dont need him. rather get someone younger out of UFA. and he is not taking a pay cut to come play for the wings. he is going to by 8m+.
