Description
BREAKDOWN
---The gibson trade hurts, im sure. Trading to a division foe is never ideal. However, I could not find a viable fit anywhere else. (NJ? probably need to retain more if sent to NJ) LA I would guess would be a place he'd waive for since he wouldn't really have to move, LA can fit him in with retention and a touch of cap wizardry, but its the only fit I could find. Dostal NEEDS to be in the Ducks net for 65 games a year. Its time. Retaining just 1.75M allows them to get a decent return. -- A pick LA I'm sure is happy to part with for a good goalie. 1.75M shouldnt hurt them too much in a couple years when some of the kids are getting their second deals.
---Trade lacombe, EDM 1st and a 4th to move up to 16. Take Levshunov at 3 and MBN at 16.
---Sign Tanev (overpay) and pesce to shore up RHD and become more defensive minded. Good vets to guide the youngsters.
---Duclair can help production on the 3rd line. A decently stable contract, 15 min TOI a night and a few mill would probably get him there.
---Sign Ned to back up Dostal for a couple years while Suchanek develops in SD. Still TONS of cap space left.

---I didnt bother signing guys like vaaks, lindstrom, nesterenko, tracey cause I just dont see them seeing lots of NHL time but Im sure they will be signed for SD.

Ducks Fans, what are your thoughts? Try not to eviscerate me, just trying to take an impartial look at the ducks here.
I like this roster, if it can stay healthy (ducks rosters have a hard time with this it seems) it will be a good measure of if Cronin is the guy or not... so far, not convinced.
---The pp units are niceeeee

I think you are at least 2M light on Pesce. In a world where Orlov got 1x7.75M I can't imagine Pesce's next contract doesn't start with a "7". I also see the Ducks signing one RD but not two. The 3rd pair guy will be some budget option like Lindstrom.

Retention on Gibson's contract is always the kicker. My opinion is that the team wants to retain zero, but we'll see on that.

Duclair is great and I like him a ton but he's just too redundant with Vatrano. I think the Ducks want to set their sights higher at a true top six right wing so that they can push Frankie down onto the 3rd line where you have Duclair.

I signed 2 RHD cause the ducks just have so much cap and really need help with shutdown guys on the back-end.
As for duclair, I know verbeek said he wants to improve bottom 6 scoring. Frankie is just not a 3rd line guy, he thrived in the top 6 I dont see him being shuffled down the lineup.

Retention is definitely the kicker. I dont see gibson with much trade value at full cap hit for a lot of teams. I think if it works in numbers, retaining some to get a better return would be good. PRoblem is, gibson has moderate control over where he goes and he wants to win. Teams ready to win either dont need a goalie or cant afford him full price. Ducks need to get Dostal the net for 70-80 percent of the year. Maybe detroit could afford him and be a situation he would go to?

Right around the 16-18 mark of the first round is where prospects really start to blend together and I see alot of guys going to teams based solely on need, not necessarily best available. If blues dont think they can get "their guy" at 16, this would be great value for them. just depends who they want

Gibson won't be traded until this coming TDL or the off-season after, if at all, there's almost no goalies available on the free agent market who can actually fill a tandem role, and Anaheim not going to want to retain 3 seasons on Gibsons deal, especially if the return is only a 2nd.

Spending 6-8M on a top 6 RW uses the cap too. As for Vatrano's fit on the 3rd line I'll disagree. He thrived on the power play and from playing with good players like McTavish. There isn't any reason to think he won't continue to get PP time even with the additions of Gauthier and some other RW. The team lost Henrique and Silverberg and both guys were on a PP unit.

As to who he plays with, the Ducks will be deep enough up front to have a solid 3rd line of real quality players.

You can count the goalies that play 65 games in a season on one hand in today's NHL. 40-50 is a much more typical work load now. Gibson and Dostal doing exactly what they did this season in splitting the starts is just fine. Again, the Ducks have no cap issues so booting Gibson off the roster just because is kind of silly. You are essentially paying Ned 4M AAV which is only trimming 2.4M off of what they'd pay Gibson in a couple of years where the cap hit doesn't matter. Trimming cap is always nice of course but intentionally down grading your goal tending position is asking for trouble.
