General inquiry really, would any combination of these assets included with the WPG '24 1st be enough for CGY?

Not looking to start any wars here just wondering. Let's assume WPG 29OA & CGY 9OA after the lottery is complete.

i dont see why Calgary moves that pick, unless its to move up. They had a lot of player movement over the past two seasons i think they're in a bit of a reset now, also if Iginla is still there have to assume they will be holding on to their pick.

Calgary won't be trading down from their own pick.

Calgary has good depth in terms of young players. What the Flames don't have is top end talent, and the best place to get it is at the top of the draft.

Though unlikely, the most I can see the Flames moving down is 3-4 spots at a time if their scouting staff doesn't see much of a difference between the top 4-5 players available.

Notable players taken 9th overall since 2003: Zegras, Sergachev, Meier, Ehlers, Horvat, Trouba, D. Hamilton, M. Granlund, Bailey, Couture, Phaneuf.

Players taken 27th at the same time: Frost, Namestnikov, J. Carlson, B. Smith, J. Schultz.

You tell me what it would take to trade down.

Iginla is why I targeted the CGY pick. We could take Iginla with our pick but there's no way he gets past CGY if he's still there at 9. We already get a 1st from CGY to use sometime in the next couple years so I was looking at the WPG pick + the '25 CGY/FLA pick + some younger prospect talent. Maybe even a secondary move where we acquire/trade up for a better pick than the WPG pick and flip to CGY for 9OA leaving us with the potential of drafting Lindstrom & Iginla this year.

I know it's unlikely and would be a high cost to make such a move but MTL has some quality options (like those listed above) who will likely make an NHL impact at some point in their careers. 20 spots is a huge jump which is why I was crowdsourcing for input. KH loves creative trades to get the pieces he wants so if it takes another trade up scenario to get a 1st closer to what CGY would want that would be reasonable. Was looking at the VGK & MIN cap crunches for next year and trying to figure out if there were potential to include them somehow but wanted to start here for info.

I'm pretty sure the pitchforks will be out in CGY if Iginla is available and CGY trades down.

I also think that Iginla will go 6th/7th based on his recent success, and him being from a hockey family.

Understandable, MTL is rather high on him and I could honestly see them picking him @ 5. Management has met with/talked with him a lot over the last little while and appear to have their sights set.

For the sake of it, MTL takes Iggy 2.0 @ 5, does that change the tune at all?

Only thing I'd take on that list is Calgary recouping their 2025 1st.

It's a better draft and Calgary could be a ****ty team next season.

You'd do it for WPG '24 1st & CGY '25 1st?

Not a Calgary fan so keep that in mind...

You're talking from a Calgary management standpoint. If they think they can compete in 2024-2025, they shouldn't. If they think they're a non-playoff team, they should.

If they're not a playoff team next year, you're essentially talking about a mid-to late-20s pick and an late 10s/early teens 2025 pick for 9th overall. If they're not a playoff team, you MAYBE move down a few picks and add that Winnipeg pick... And I think 2025 is a better draft so how much do you lose moving down?

Personally, I think the idea of Calgary competing next season is laughable, but it really comes down to what they think. The opportunity to draft Yakemchuk or Iggy's kid may be too tempting for Calgary, too.

If CGY is a ****ty team(top 10 pick) then MTL would get FLA's pick in 25, not CGY's. MTL gets the Flames pick only if the Flames' pick is 11 or higher and the pick is also better than the FLA pick.
