If we somehow find ourselves in the postseason next year looks different

Description
I was all onboard with scraping this team to the trash heap and starting over. I still am not convinced this team has anything left to offer… but the fact that they are fighting right now and showing a sense of urgency that’s been invisible for months prior tells me that 87 deserves another run. We should be looking to move Jarry and Rakell this offseason. I also hope Dubas learns that a buyout is sometimes a good idea.

Resign:
Crosby 8.7Mx2
Pettersson: 6.5Mx6

Buyout-Reilly Smith

Waive-Acciari

Any RFA who isn’t already ours I’m assuming won’t get a qualifying offer and will be a UFA.

There’s plenty of opportunities for depth players to move into this lineup. We can still send down Puustinen and Poulin among the forwards. Also we could send down Rooney to give Ponomarev a spot if he performs well in WBS. As far as the Dman go, guys like Ludvig, Shea, Rathbone, and St. Ivany all can rotate into the lineup as needed. For goalies Vladar stars the year as the 2, but if he struggles he can be sent down for either Copley or Blomqvist (who I’m hoping is the long term answer).

There’s zero chance Arizona is paying Rakell $5m a season to play on the third line.

Calgary certainly won't be taking Jarry. They need to move a goalie out not bring in another one in.

I think it's far more likely that the Flames go after Talbot, or Quick in free agency if they trade Markstrom.

A bunch of teams are going to try and pay them. After those two there’s zero good options for UFA goalies.

You can sign a better RW for the same cap hit… or you can take him and convert a 6th rounder into a 3rd. I think that’s a very easy decision.

I’m assuming a Markstrom trade is as good as done for once the summer rolls around so that leaves you with Vladar and Wolf. I’m proposing you upgrade that to Jarry and Wolf.

That makes no sense at all it'd. They'd run with Vladar and Wolf or just keep Markstrom in the first place. Jarry only makes 625k less than Markstrom and his contract has twice as many years left on it. Vladar's contract is much less and expires after the 2024-25 season.

exactly because there is no way AZ wants him

lets say he is on team which other W is he replacing? keller/schmaltz 1st? crouse/guenther 2nd? maccelli/doan 3rd? heck carcone on 4W has 21 G and Kerfoot (I know playing C now but has been W mostly) has 42pts, so no rakell is not at all needed on the team. C and D oh yeah

Josh Doan is a better option, and $25m isn’t some easy float that you think it is.

Vladar isn’t any good though. Why would you view him as anything but expendable? In fact every player on your side of that trade is expendable. Guys like Hunt and Rooney are waiver guys. If Markstrom decides he no longer is ticked at your ownership and wants to stay then obviously you wouldn’t trade for a goalie. If Markstrom status you’d still want to move out Vladar to clear a spot for Wolf.

Josh Doan is a better option than a veteran who had 60 points a season ago? If you guys want to be any good next season you’ll need more veteran help. I can’t imagine they want to keep “building for the future” when they finally have an arena plan and the team has been bad for a while now. You have more cap space than almost every team, so why not use it to your advantage? Take on some cap dumps and get paid to do it.

He would be able to play on the 3rd line of basically every team in the league and probably on the 2nd line for about 10 other teams.

We don't want anything to do with your cap dump goalie with 4 YEARS left on his contract! Get that through your head. Vladar gets paid a whole lot less, only has one year left and has played well when he gets the opportunity to start more than once in a while. We'll see how he performs next year after finally getting a nagging injury fixed surgically after playing with it for 2 or 3 years. If he's good we extend him if not we don't it's no big deal.

How does Rakell help any of that? Sure, he could absolutely strengthen the bottom 6, but at $5m?

So you’d be ok with an AHL goalie and a goalie who’s not proven anything yet in the NHL? Wolf/Vladar might be the worst tandem in the league if that’s the plan. Ask Buffalo how it went when this time last year they were all convinced Devon Levi would walk into the NHL and dominate.

Cap space is the only reason. And he is objectively a better player today than the kids you have at RW. If you are saying you’d rather give the minutes to those kids that’s understandable, but every GM in this league would take a veteran winger with Rakell’s resume over 98% of the kids in the league if they’re trying to win.

AZ RW are schmaltz, guenther, doan and carcone. Ill put rakell at this moment ahead of the kids but 2 things; rakell has 4 more years and guenther & doan and prolly but will over those years surpass rakell who will be 35yo at the end of contract. second this team is not a rakell away from competing for cup so yes develop the kids. sorry i know PITT wants/needs to shed cap but AZ has really no need for 30+ yo W for 4 years

I understand your point of view on this if it is to give ice time to the kids. It’s something I’d like to see the Pens do more of as we move forward. Now I had read that your ownership group wants to make a playoff push next year and I’d assume adding veterans is required. If I’m in your position I’d be using my cap space to get paid to take on contracts. If Rakell’s is too long so be it but I’d look for maybe some shorter term vets, maybe a Dman like Holl who Detroit will need to dump.
