So given Chych has an injury history, played poorly defensively this year, and has only 1 year remaining under contract, how much do you think he is actually worth?
Sorry I know this was drawn out reply, had a lot to say but the last part answered your question.
I think he's worth the most playing for the team. He's expressed an interest in staying and the best asset management would likely mean keeping him for the second pair, putting Sanderson on the first pair and trading Chabot as his value is more stable than Chyrchun and any new deal would be much cheaper than Chabby's giving the team a bit more cap flexibility. But Ottawa gave 12overall along with two 2nds, one of which had the chance to be another 1st. This was generally seen a fair value, possibly leaning a bit towards Arizona but not really an overpay.
We're here a year later, he's been healthier than ever which as you mentioned was always his biggest drawback. Hasn't missed a game all year and set a new career high for gp. 4 points away from a new career high there as well. Defensive play has been questionable at times but genuinely think this can be chalked up to coaching change and defensive responsibilities being inconsistent. The whole team looks lost much of the time in their own end, wouldnt say its just him. The change in his stats before and after the coaching change was drastic but im sure he'll settle in.
If they were forced to move him then I think a mid 1st and a 2nd with a B/C prospect would be fair. Wherever he gets traded im sure he'd be willing to extend. But i think the ideal return would be a 2nd line winger 1 for 1 or a young RD and a 2nd/3rd depending on how good the player is.
