And to clear this up. This would be a fresh start for Johnson who doesn't seem to be fitting in/ used right with CBJ. He seems like someone who would thrive with Marty St louis and the young core. MTL may need to add more, but I did it for fun.

That certainly wont get it done. Make it MTL's 1st and you would at least be getting closer.

Kirby Dach with the Hawks: 152 Games, 19 G, 40 A, 59 P traded for 13th, 66th picks (pick value 6.3 based on the Athletic's GSVA model of picks)

Alex Newhook with the Avs: 159 Games, 27 G, 39 A, 66 P traded for 31st, 37th picks (pick value 5.1 based on the Athletic's GSVA model of picks)

Kent Johnson with the Jackets: 130 Games 22 G 37 A 59 P traded for (in this hypothetical) a pick that by current standings is 25th (pick value 3.5) and a literal nobody.

To make this a fair/comparable trade, the Habs would have to add their own second this year. However I don't think the Jackets are selling and the ask would be much closer to the Dach trade in pick value which would be another late 1st rather than an early 2nd.

Why would Kent Johnson get less than Dach and Newhook despite being better?

If by “used right” you mean, “in a way that doesn’t expose the shortcomings in his game that accompany his frail, not-yet-developed physique,” the CBJ are doing just that. He was also having a bit of a sophomore slump. I don’t think the Jackets are anywhere near ready to move on from him, but he’s probably still two years away from having a meaningful impact. It’s not his fault, but he’s getting leaned on by opponents who see it.
