What in the world is the incentive here for SJ. Wahlstrom is straight up bad, as is Pageau who's on a terrible contract.

Granlund has had an unbelievable year on the worst team I've ever seen and is a leader for the young guys on that team. He's easily worth a high 2nd/late 1st.

Sharks aren’t moving Granlund unless they are getting a 1st. A reclamation project and a 20 point center won’t do it

What was the incentive for SJS in the Vanecek deal? He is playing nearly 21 minutes a night ofc he's gonna do well lol. The incentive is to get a player who could perform at a similar level offensively in his position with better defense and a former top prospect who could boom into a star in SJS (unlikely but possible)

SJS got a negative asset for Kaahkonen. Granlund ain't gonna be much better lmao

you are giving us a negative asset and a third line player for our best player this season lol, regardless of what you think your value is, we value him highly

I disagree about vanecek being a negative asset, and the sharks didn’t have good leverage in the Kahk trade with him going to be a UFA. If vanecek rebounds to his old form then he will have more value than Kahkonen did at this years TDL because he’s got a longer resume. It is a decent bet whereas the trade you proposed is stripping the sharks of our on ice leader this year who has decent chemistry with the young guys for a bad contract and an okey bet.

Goalies are a crapshoot. Before this year, Kahkonen had been bad while Vanecek had been decent. This year they were the exact opposite. The Sharks didn’t want to extend Kahkonen and the goalie market dried up l, so they flipped him for a goalie that was signed for next year. The Sharks weren’t going to be able to sign a goalie in free agency because what goalie in their right mind would sign to play behind the Sharks defense.

On Granlund, he’s been very good on the ice for an extremely bad Sharks team. He’s also been a good leader. Pageau has been bad on a decent team. He’s probably not going to come onto a worse team and perform better. If the Sharks trade Granlund it’ll be for futures, and no Wahlstrom doesn’t count. You compare him to Zadina, but the Sharks didn’t have to give anything up for Zadina. They signed him as a free agent to a 1 year deal so there was 0 risk.

Wow First of all, how do you not understand that trade? They were going to lose Kahk for literally nothing in free agency. They wanted to give him a chance with a bubble team, and got back another NHL level goalie that has a contract into next year at a fairly low number. Similar to Blackwood, they want to see if he can bounce back given he's still fairly young (for a goaltender) and has had very up and down seasons. Also to possibly deal Blackwood at the draft now that Chrona is showing to be close to NHL level.

Second of all (and this is the big one) how in the WORLD are you comparing that trade to this. Nothing about it is comparable lmao Kahk was a neutral asset who was a pending UFA. Granlund is a great asset with another year. Pageau is an awful contract with little chance at bouncing back and a lot of term, Vancek is younger with a chance to bounce back and only has one year left on his contract so the Sharks aren't stuck with him if he doesn't bounce back. The only part I agree with is that a 7th and Wahlstrom have similar value.

I'd much rather lose Granlund to free agency than to add worse players and contracts. It'll cost at LEAST a 2nd to dump Pageau

The Sharks flipped a cheaper, better goaltender for a bad goaltender on an overpaid deal with term and got what? A 7th? This is the same exact thing but with centers lol.

Kahkonen was probably the best goalie to get moved at the TDL in a market where there were a handful of teams who should have wanted him, why is Grandlund any different? He has boomed on a team where he plays first line and 21 minutes a night. You are all grossly overvaluing him oh my gosh. A 1st rounder?? Wow

That is exactly what happened in the Vanecek deal!

Also Granlund and Pageau are quite similar offensively on a per/60 scale at EV lmao

Multiple people have already explained the rationale behind the Kahkonen deal in this thread. You clearly disagree, which is fine.

If Pageau and Granlund are so similar, why do you want to trade him for Granlund and also give up a young NHL player?

I didn’t say anything about granlunds trade value is. Goalies dont usually get moved at the trade deadline, 32 thoughts published a good podcast on it I think around the TDL. Vanecek has had one bad year and likely held a similar value to kahkonen. Sharks get a goalie they can spend the end of season and offseason with and if he rebounds then we get a good trade asset. If granlund plays at this level again next season (and we can find some one to retain 50%) granlund will be the trade asset. Clearly a market for kahkonen never materialized because the big piece goaltenders didn’t move.

idrc if sharks fans are upset with the trade, no team ever thinks they win trades. Yall are so egregiously off on Pageau its hyseritcal. This is purely a move for a change of scenary, Granlund makes 5 million and plays 21 minutes a night, his value is not remotely close to what yall think it is. Ill be dying when he goes for a 4th next TDL

Listen, Sharks fans like Granlund. He’s been good for us this year. If we trade him it’s going to be for futures. Maybe it is only a 4th. I’d rather have a 4th than the 2 players you’re offering.

You made an AGM trade that was universally hated by the other teams fans. No amount of explanation from you is going to change our minds.

He's outproducing multiple guys who got 1sts and 2nds this year and is a great PKer as well. Sharks just get a 3rd team to retain for a 5th and they easily get an early 2nd / late 1st:
- Henrique got a 1st - Granlund is having a better year
- Walker + a cap dump got a 1st - Granlund is having a better year than Walker
- Monahan got a 1st - Granlund having a comparable year
- Lindholm got a 1st + roster player + great prospect - Granlund having comparable year offensively & MUCH better year defensively
- Tiffoli got a 2nd + 3rd
- Wennberg got a 2nd + 4th - Granlund having a FAR superior year
- Mantha - See Wennberg deal

You're just are wrong and refuse to accept it.

Look at how much Monahan played vs Granlund. Henrique was a massive overpay. Walker is a defenseman lmao what. Lindholm is WAY better what r u on. Wennberg is better defensively lol. Toffoli played 17 mins a night and scored 34 goals last season??? Mantha played 14 minutes a night.

I am not wrong lmao, grandlund plays 21 mins a night, 150% of what Mantha plays yet Mantha had just 10 less points in 2 more games and 11 more goals lmao. Cmon bro what. SEVEN MORE MINS A NIGHT.

This is so funny I cant handle it

You're laughing at everyone else, while everyone's laughing at you.

Why is TOI you're biggest factor here. That's actually absurd. If anything that should tell you good he's been. He's playing 20:48 a night and is only a MINUS 10 on a team that has a minus 120 goal differential. That's absurdly good when he's playing that many minutes. He's getting the hardest matchups that those other guys aren't and his linemates are Zetterlund and Barabonov primarily.

plus minus is the worst stat ever lmao.

Why do I care about TOI? Because spending 7 more minutes a night will drive more offense lol. Thats why. More TOI = more opportunities.

What is better: a goalie with a 30 minute shutout or a 60 minute shutout? 100 points in 82 games or 90 points in 55 games? See?

Plus minus is a meaningless stat with no context. I put a lot of context with it.

And TOI absolutely does not mean more production. Look at Points / 60 minutes and you'll regularly see 3rd and 4th liners having more points per 60 than superstars, and that's because they're getting deployed in favorable situations.

MORE TIME ON ICE MEANS MORE OPPURTUNITIES LMAO.

Plus minus is never ever ever ever a good stat.

Wanna use per/60? Stefan Noesen, Hendrix Lapierre, Phillip Tomasimo, Warren Foegele, Bobby McMann, Sonny Milano and Morgan Geekie are in Granlunds range!

You are just making excuses now. san jose plays 20-40 minutes of garbage time a night in 60//82 games this season. Thats about 10-12 minutes a night where Granlund plays opposing teams bottom six so they can rest their good players. let me guess, its harder to score against them than the top six now?
