Markstrom would be just a minor overpayment for a 34 year old pretty average goalie with two years remaining. Better win a SC in those two years.

Are you living in 2001? Markstrom has been quite good this year with an above average SV% on a bad team, and is very much worth his contract if he were a FA

Husso costs a 2nd to dump

Johansson has zero value

The trade is even IF Markstrom needed to be traded and CGY needed a 3rd line winger and undersized Dman in 4 years.

All these trades prolly get rejected by the players bc of NMC or their GM bc they are almost even at best, which isn't enough to get those players off those teams

I live in reality. Unlike you. Markstrom over the last four years is close to average if not slightly above. Average in 21, excellent in 22, awful in 23, and good in 24. But giving up an elite prospect like Sandin for him is utterly idiotic based on his variance, age, and cap hit.

Kinda funny Flames fans think their defencemen are stars, Hanifan, Tanev (traded at TDL) Weager and Andersson. Would have expected a better Markstrom performance if those guys were truly far above average Dmen.

Markstrom is going to finish top 5 in Vezina voting this year. He has been significantly better this year than he was in 2022 where he finished 2nd in Vezina voting. So lets fix that for you

Average in 21, excellent in 22, awful in 23 (until his first child was born, then good), and excellent in 24. So 2 Vezina caliber seasons, 1 average season, and 1 bad season but with a pretty good excuse. If we go even further back he was very good in 2020 with the Canucks too

Team started out brutal as they got used to the new coverage system in their own end. It ended up resulting in a lot of major blunders in coverage for the first 15-20 games of the season, after that it was fine though. Weegar has been a top tier defenseman once again this year but with more offense than last year. Tanev took a small step back but overall was fine. Hanifin was excellent this year. Andersson has been ok this year, doesn't help him when our PP has been a disaster. Calgary only got Kylington back recently and before then were running a 3rd pairing rotation of Gilbert, Oesterle, and DeSimone (at one point all 3 when Tanev was hurt), who are all replacement level at best.
Lastly there is the forwards. Kadri really doesn't really participate in defensive play and is a puck hog (he has had a good year offensively though with the exception of the first 9 games). Lindholm was a mess this year and I really do hope he can get his game together and have a strong playoffs because nobody is going to pay him what he wants with the way he's played this season. Huberdeau took forever to get going too but has been good since the start of the new year. Basically even if Calgary had 4 very good defensemen to start the year, there are only a maximum of 2 on the ice at any given time. Even if they played perfect the other team still has 5 players and our offense really didn't help out too much outside of the Backlund line

Extreme homerism to suggest Markstrom is having a Vezina caliber season this year. Markstrom this season by the numbers of the 40th most played goalies is 16th in both save% and GSAA/60. QS% of .561 and QA% of 94. Nice season. Far from excellent. Jarry by comparison is superior or equal in all four of those metrics and I would never suggest he is a remote Vezina caliber goalie this year. Also Markstrom doesn't appear close to winning a Vezina this year based on popular NHL writer opinions.

Extreme homerism? He ranked 2nd in GSAx with +31.88, only behind Hellebuyck. Kevin Woodley of Clear Sight Analytics, and AKA the Goalie Guru has been very adamant that Markstrom should be in the Vezina conversation too.

Jarry is no doubt having a good year but he hasn't held a candle to Markstrom this season

I also didn't say he would win, I said he will finish top 6 in voting. Hellebuyck has almost certainly won it at this point

Not that I would ever go off of a single metric, but if I am using one above all others it would be GSAA/60 at ES. He's 18th out of the 32 most played goalies this season. Jarry is 14th. Hellebuyck is first by a wide margin. Regardless, the most important stats for the Vezina are the standard box cars: save%, wins, shutouts, and GAA. None of which Markstrom is close to being tops in. There's no chance for a Vezina nor even serious consideration for it.

Markstrom is a great goalie so not sure what this argument is about.

It's about the definition of "great." Most the NHL doesn't likely feel that way. So Flames fans expecting to get a great return for him are not grounded in reality. Especially based on his age and contract within the context of CGY ownership appearing to have limited appetite to retain money.

Age? Dude go look at the age of Osgood and Hasek the last time they won the cup. And Mike Vernon in 97. Goalies can play later so just stop.

Vezina voting is done by the GM's and I can say with pretty decent confidence that Markstrom has not gone unnoticed by the GM's this year. He will certainly get a few 2nd place votes, landing him top 5 in voting.

As for a best stat GSAx is a far better metric for goalies than GAA or GSAA
