guys a ufa for the first time in his career, he has every right to pick where he wants to sign long-term. probs looks at huberdeau and thinks hmmm maybe i shouldn’t sign an 8 year deal willy nilly with whatever team management is trying to force me to go to…

just trade the guy as a rental to whoever has the best offer and let him walk to tampa in the summer if that’s what he wants. surely hanifin nets a 1st even as a pure rental, far worse players than him have

Either he or his agent are letting teams know that he won't resign with them if they trade for him and the only teams he wants to go to that we know of are Tampa which is his preferred and Florida which is his 2nd choice. Imo this is fine, a player shouldnt have to change the trajectory of their life so that a team can get a bit more from a sign and trade vs his price as just a rental. I think it only becomes scummy if a player pulls a John Tavares or Johnny Gaudreau and says that their intentions are to resign and then end up leaving with no warning and the team gets nothing for them

Kinda funny, the Flames are littered with UFA signings. They didn't have to compensate the prior teams. But when one of their own, wants to go be to a UFA, the same fans demand compensation.

Not scummy at all. The Isles and Flames management should have known Tavares and Gaudreau just might leave if they hadn't signed an extension by TDL. And please no one knows what Gaudreau and Tavares said to Isles/Flames management. Certainly publicly players don't throw their teams under the bus during the season by saying, "Trade me, I want to leave"

I would assume that the flames and islanders would have traded their franchise players if they even had a doubt that they wouldnt resign. Players asked to be traded or say they arent happy with their situation all of the time. I cant imagine leafs fans would be too happy with matthews if the summer rolled around with him unsigned and he was saying he wanted to stay in toronto and then went to arizona.

Small markets need to recognize the obvious and stop shooting themselves in the foot.
Any player that doesn't chose where they want to live, Finally, is a schmuck. Not the opposite...

I find it really Hard to believe Tavares said I'm out to Snow . I'm also pretty sure Snow asked him. Be a man about it. Just say Garth I'm gone, I want to go.home. I wouldn't call it scummy a bit selfish maybe.

Just to add to your comment. If he has truly let it be known that Tampa and Florida are his top two choices, IMO it may hurt him this summer if he's still a UFA.
Both Florida and Tampa may be looking at other ways to spend their cap instead of a Dman. So Hanifan goes to other teams to negotiate, how to they feel when they think an expensive UFA really doesn't want play for them. Heck maybe his 3rd and 4th choices pass too. I just wonder if "limiting" his choices publicly was a good choice.

Thats a good point, with these things it is always hard to tell if they are deliberate or not. Did Hanifin want to make it public that he only wants to go to Tampa or Florida or did an insider leak something they weren't supposed to? The reporting on this was weird as Seravalli broke the news like 2 weeks before anyone else and I don't really consider him a reliable source of information, but then CJ and EF later confirmed it. Theoretically it would have been in Hanifin's best interest to say nothing publicly but then behind the scenes him and Brisson push Conroy to Tampa or Florida. If Conroy knew his situation and every deal he tried to make fell through at the end because Hanifin wouldnt resign then maybe he leaked it to let the public know the situation he was in. At the end of the day its just speculation right now and we may find out eventually.
